If this game sounds familiar to you thats because it is. Back in 1993 EA released Mutant League Football on the Sega Genesis (and later in 2006 for the PlayStation Portable). The game was designed using the Madden '93 engine and you could play the wonderful game of Football with a twist. Cheating, Bribing the ref, killing the ref and/or other players, were perfectly acceptable in this game and I must say I won every game I played by killing so many players from the other team they had to forfiet the game. 

Now indie company, Digital Dreams Entertainment is bringing Mutant Football League, the "spiritual" successor to Mutant League...

The spiritual successor to the classic sports game, Mutant League Football, is closer than ever to being a reality as it's now formally launched a Steam Greenlight campaign.

Retro game fans who've long awaited a sequel, or revitalization, of the Mutant sports franchise are one step closer to seeing it. Digital Dreams and original Mlf developer Michael Mendhiem have been hard at work on the spiritual follow-up, Mutant Football League, for the last few years. They're bringing the game to Pax West next week for gamers to play around with, but they've also landed on Steam Greenlight. So you can go vote on it to help make it happen:

In 2013, Michael Mendheim tried to bring back one of the most beloved (and wacky) sports titles from the retro era on KickStarter. While the campaign for Mutant Football League ultimately failed, the creators weren't about to give up. Now they've announced the game will be landing on the PS4 and Xbox One, and I got the chance to talk with Michael about the game's return, along with some brand new screenshots from the game. The classic 16-bit game is finally making a return! One of my favorite sports titles (pretty impressive considering how much I really don't care for sports games) has always been Mutant League Football, and when the original developer of the game, Michale Mendheim, revealed a reboot of sorts, for the title on Kickstarter, I couldn't back it fast enough. Sadly, the funding never reached it's goal, but gamers shouldn't be disheartened.

This past weekend I was fortunate enough to attend the Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo on behalf of Sound on Sight. I had a great time, and I was able to do a number of things there that you don’t actually care about. You care about the comics, and I don’t blame you. (Yes, dear reader, I am in your head. Titan Comics has announced a host of new titles at New York Comic Con.

These include Snowpiercer, Sally of the Wasteland, Girl 1, Ordinary, Johnny Nemo, The Complete Cholly & Flytrap, Springheeled Jack and The Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The volumes of Snowpiercer translate Jacques Lob and Benjamin Legrand's graphic novel Le Transperceneige, which inspired the Boon Joon-ho-directed movie starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton and John Hurt.

Sally of the Wasteland is writer Victor Gischler and artist Tazio Bettin's grindhouse-style series.

Doctor Who actor Noel Clarke will write superhero thriller Girl 1 with artist Yishan Li.

Titan will also be printing Rob Williams and D'Israeli's Ordinary, which debuted recently in the pages of Judge Dredd Megazine.

Peter Milligan and Brett Ewins's Johnny Nemo will be collected, alongside Arthur Suydam's Cholly & Flytrap.

We've talked about Mutant League Football here on the site before.  We discussed it's greatness earlier this year during one of my "Game Franchises That Deserve a Reboot" articles, and wouldn't you know it...it's actually happening.  Now the game's creator has decided to bring the beloved and wacky sports title back from the depths and they're using KickStarter to do it.  Come inside to find out more!

I'm pretty excited about this, and I hope other are as well.  The game's creator, Michael Mendheim, wants $750,000 to make a new Mutant League Football game, and it still has a ways to go before that happens (of course they're only a few days in right now).  I for one think we should give it to him.  Not only because I want a new Mutant Football League, but his concept stuff on it looks flat out  gorgeous.

If you were a sports gamer in the 90′s, chances are that you’re familiar with Mutant League Football. Released by EA in 1993, the game was a modified version of Madden that featured a variety of mutants and monsters in a post-apocalyptic setting.

A number of spinoff games were released, but the original game was never followed up with a sequel. Fans could get what they’ve been hoping for with a new project from the original game’s designer, Michael Mendheim. In our latest Q&A feature, he talks with us about his new project, Mutant Football League:

Thanks for taking the time to talk with us. Many 90′s gamers have fond memories of Mutant League Football and I’m excited to hear about your new project. The first question I think many of our readers will have is: Why now? Can you tell me about your work to revive this franchise?...

Today marked the launch of the "Mutant Football League" Kickstarter, a spiritual successor to EA's 16-bit classic "Mutant League Football" from series creator Michael Mendheim. The Kickstarter campaign, which is seeking $750,000 to complete the game for iOS and Android devices--with stretch goals potentially bringing it to other platforms--resurrects a property that's been out of the public eye for some time now, albeit with a very vocal following.

But why go it alone without EA? And isn't Mendheim courting conflict with the publisher by using a concept (and name) so similar to the original?

First, a little background: EA's "Mutant League Football" was released 20 years ago this month on the Genesis, during the "Mortal Kombat"-era of development. This is when studios, capitalizing on the success of Midway's bloody fighter, began building games around carnage and gore--usually with a sense of humor to soften the impact. Video games are hard to make. Like, really hard. In most cases, the finished product is a million times different than the one developers had planned. Over the course of prolonged development, ideas change, characters are re-designed and altered, and entire levels are re-made from the ground up. Engines also change, and in some cases, development moves onto an entirely new platform.

Eventually a final build is created and shipped out to gamers across the world. Some games however, never see the light of day and are discarded; sometimes to be rescued by another studio, others are never heard from again.

It’s worth noting that the practice of completely abandoning a project is only really common within the video game industry. When was the last time you heard of a movie studio firing everyone on set halfway through shooting a new Hollywood blockbuster? Hell, even Firefly got 12 episodes.

In celebration of the release of "Helldiver", the first book in the epic graphic novel series The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Heavy Metal Magazine invites artists to submit their original artwork or photography displaying their vision of Pestilence.

The three-book series is written by Michael Mendheim and illustrated by Simon Bisley. Check out the cover art for "Helldiver" and a video trailer below. Parts 2 and 3 are entitled "The Chosen" and "End of Days," respectively.

Fantasy artist Simon Bisley began his career on the British multi-strip comic 2000 Ad, where he handled Judge Dredd, Slaine and ABC Warriors.

He then moved on to America's DC Comics where he produced award-winning work on Doom Patrol, Lobo and the fan-favourite Batman vs Judge Dredd. Simon also created concept art for films such as Galaxy Quest and the remake of The Time Machine.

Adding to that impressive résumé, he's teaming up with video game producer/director Michael Mendheim (Mutant League Football, Army Men, Battletanx, Defjam: Icon, Robocalypse), who is the creator and writer of new graphic novel series The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

The project was unveiled last year and a release date of April 13 has now been announced for the first book - titled Helldiver - in the three-part series. Second book The Chosen and third volume End of Days are set to follow later in the year.

With some New Age and pseudoscientific beliefs claiming that 2012 is the date the world ends, it seems rather fitting that the first part of new miniseries The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse is due out out in the new year.

The graphic novel, titled Helldiver, will be available in January, with second book The Chosen and third volume End of Days following later in the year.

The project is a collaboration between Kevin Eastman, owner and publisher of Heavy Metal Magazine, video game creator/producer Michael Mondheim and fantasy/comic book artist Simon Bisley.

The series is described as "a dark, gritty, action-horror story inspired by the biblical tale of Armageddon."
