Thierry Frémaux was born in Tullins outside Grenoble and grew up in the Minguettes suburb of Lyon. He has been the artistic director and then managing director of the Institut Lumière in Lyon since 1995. He became the artistic director of the Cannes Film Festival in 2004 and general delegate in 2007.

Credits his father, an electric engineer, for introducing him to cinema.

Graduated in Contemporary History from Lumière University Lyon 2, owing his master degree to a thesis on the origins of the Positivism.

Declined the offer of becoming director of the &#39;Cinémathèque Française&#39; in 1999.

He has a black belt in judo and taught the discipline himself.

He earns EUR120,000 ($143,258) a year according to Variety [2018].
