Amazingly, before they co-starred together in the FX thriller The Old Man, Hollywood veterans Jeff Bridges and John Lithgow had never acted together before. And in the first season, they didn’t act together much either.
“We barely worked together in the first season,” Lithgow points out to TVLine, with his former FBI assistant director Harold Harper and Bridges’ former CIA agent Dan Chase only speaking over the phone for most of Season 1. (“And even then, the script supervisor was on the phone.”) But despite only having “one afternoon of rehearsal” with Bridges, Lithgow recalls, “we knew it was gonna work…...

Venu Sports, a streaming joint venture of Fox, Warner Bros. Discovery and Disney, has announced a number of executive hires across departments.
The new hires join a team of more than 150 engineers and executives focused on Venu but working at Fox, some of whom are expected to join the venture down the line. Venu is planning to launch this fall, bringing together linear feeds of 14 sports-heavy networks. The price and launch date have not been announced, and the service is not a comprehensive solution for sports fans, given that NBCUniversal and Paramount Global are not a part of it.
The new team, including heads of technology, finance, legal, people and communications, will report to CEO Pete Distad. “Getting the chance to assemble the starting lineup for the management team responsible for building the Venu organization, creating the culture, setting the pace of innovation, and ultimately, fueling the growth behind our...

When stunt coordinators Tim Connolly and Hank Kingi Jr. first read the script for the pilot of FX’s “The Old Man,” they thought its central chase sequence was one of the best-written scenes in TV. Then, their minds flooded with “a ton of concerns.”
Speaking with Variety as Emmy voting comes to a close, Connolly says their challenge was: “How do you pull such a significant scene off with an actor that is 70 years old, and make it feel real and visceral?”
So Jeff Bridges prepared for the scene for over a month. In the series, he plays Dan, a rogue CIA operative on the run after being discovered by the FBI. The pilot climaxes with Dan trying to outrun a tail. He seemingly disappears, but before the agents can react, he comes out of nowhere and crashes his car, staving off any fightback from the FBI agents chasing after him.

This story about Jeff Bridges and “The Old Man” first ran in the Drama Series issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Over seven decades, Jeff Bridges has demonstrated an uncanny ability to disappear into characters while still seeming like himself — whether it’s a fawn-eyed extraterrestrial (“Starman”), a chill Zen master (“The Big Lebowski”) or an alcoholic country singer (“Crazy Heart),” a performance for which he won an Oscar. Now Bridges mesmerizes as Dan Chase, a rogue CIA operative pulled back into the game to protect his daughter in FX’s slow-burn espionage thriller “The Old Man,” which has weathered a rough road to completion.
Production shut down during the pandemic and again when Bridges was diagnosed with lymphoma in the fall of 2020. He underwent chemotherapy, then spent several months in the hospital after contracting Covid-19. He is now in remission and healthy, and “The Old Man” has become FX...

Apple has hired noted digital executive Tim Connolly to join its video group in an as-yet-unspecified role. Connolly formerly served as a top partnerships executive at both Quibi and Hulu.
Variety reports that Connolly will be focused on Apple's burgeoning subscription product, Apple TV+, as the company looks to bundle its various services into discounted offerings.
Last month, for instance, Apple TV+ launched its first bundle, enabling subscribers to add CBS All Access and Showtime for $10 per month -- roughly a 50% discount as opposed to if each service was purchased individually. And Bloomberg reported last month that Apple is looking to begin offering a number of bundled packages in October collectively called Apple One. These bundles will include various combinations of Apple TV+, Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple News+, extra iCloud storage, and more.
Connolly departed Quibi last year, months prior to its launch, amid a reorganization of its partnerships and distribution team.

Tim Connolly, formerly a senior executive at Quibi and Hulu in charge of partnerships at each of those companies, has joined Apple’s video group.
Connolly’s hire by the tech giant was first reported by the Telegraph, which cited an update to his LinkedIn profile that says he recently joined the Apple “video business” based in L.A. The assumption is that Connolly is working on the Apple TV Plus subscription-video product, at a time when Apple is reportedly looking to introduce more bundles for the product. An Apple rep did not respond to a request for comment.

Another top executive at Quibi has left the fledgling streamer: Megan Imbres, head of brand and content marketing, is leaving the company after a year in the role, Variety has confirmed.
Imbres, whose exit comes two weeks after Quibi’s April 6 launch, oversaw creative development for all of the short-form streaming service’s brand and content marketing executions, including its Super Bowl Liv ad. Prior to joining the company in April 2019, she spent six years at Netflix in various marketing positions.
In a memo to staff Wednesday, Imbres said she felt it was an “opportune time” to depart now that Quibi had launched, a source tells Variety.
“Now that we are on the other side of launch, I’ve made the very hard decision to leave Quibi,” Imbres wrote in the email. “It feels like an opportune time of transition where I can take some time to identify my next challenge.

In a chin-scratching turn of events prior to its April launch, mobile video service Quibi has lost its third top-level exec in recent months -- this time Diane Nelson, who joined the mobile video platform in 2018 as head of content operations and programming.
"Diane Nelson has been a valued member of the team, helping us build a strong organization full of exceptional people,” Quibi founder Jeffrey Katzenberg told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement. “We wish her well and support her as she focuses on other priorities, and thank her for her many contributions to Quibi.”
Prior to joining Quibi, Nelson spent 22 years at Warner Bros., during which time she managed the company's Harry Potter franchise as well as its relationship with author Jk Rowling, and also served as president of DC Entertainment for nine years. Kiefer Sutherland is heading to Quibi.
The “24” actor will star in a series remake of the 1993 Harrison Ford movie “The Fugitive,” which has been given the greenlight at Quibi.
Sutherland will play legendary Detective Clay Bryce who is trying to apprehend Mike Ferro, played by Boyd Holbrook. Stephen Hopkins, who previously worked with Sutherland on “24,” has been tapped to direct the project and will also serve as an executive producer.
The logline for the series sounds similar to the original film, but with a few key differences: When a bomb rips through the Los Angeles subway train he’s riding on, blue-collar Mike Ferro (Holbrook) just wants to make sure his wife, Allison, and 10-year-old daughter, Pearl, are safe. But the faulty evidence on the ground and “tweet-now, confirm-later” journalism paint a nightmarish picture: it looks to all the world that Mike was responsible for the heinous act. Janice Min is stepping down from her content executive role at Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman’s short-form premium video startup, Quibi.
“Janice Min will be leaving Quibi,” a Quibi spokesperson told Variety. “We thank her for her leadership and wish her well as she embarks on her next chapter.”
The exit of Min, the former top editor of The Hollywood Reporter, follows the late-August departure of Quibi’s head of partnerships and advertising Tim Connolly, whose position was eliminated. Connolly, a former Hulu executive, had only joined the company in Dec. 2018. Quibi does not plan to replace Connolly, Variety learned last month.
Min’s exit is unrelated to Connolly’s, said a source close to the situation.
Quibi intends to launch its platform on April 6, 2020, and has raised over $1 billion in funding from a high-profile group of investors that includes Disney, NBCUniversal, Viacom, WarnerMedia, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Lionsgate.

Amid a reorganization on its partnerships and distribution team, Quibi has let go of one of its top execs months prior to its launch.
Tim Connolly, who formerly served the head of partnerships for Jeffrey Katzenberg’s mobile video startup, is no longer with Quibi, after joining the company from Hulu late last year. Connolly's role included spearheading distribution deals with major telecom companies for Quibi programming on their devices. He had also contributed to the negotiation of $100 million upfront advertising deals with the likes of Google, P&g, Pepsi, and Walmart, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The reorganization will see Quibi’s ad partnerships team becoming a standalone group that will report directly to CEO Meg Whitman. However, Connolly’s was the only role that was eliminated, the Reporter reports.

Former Hulu executive Tim Connolly, who headed partnerships and distribution as one of the high-profile executives for Hollywood upstart Quibi, has left the company.
A source at the company said Connolly left in good standing and Quibi thanked him for his leadership and contributions. His departure was first reported by Business Insider. The advertising partnerships team will now report to Quibi CEO Meg Whitman. The Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded company seeks to sell subscriptions to a streaming platform that will focus on quick video bites for smaller, portable screens, all supported by pre-roll advertising and subscriptions, with a no-ads option available to subscribers for a slightly higher price. The company plans an April 2020 debut. Quibi already has deals in place with Walmart, Proctor & Gamble and Google. It has been enlisting high-profile content producers for new material, and, after striking a deal with NBC News, also plans to launch two daily news shows aimed at millennials.

Hulu passed 25 million subscribers by the end of 2018, the streaming service announced on Tuesday morning, marking a 48 percent year-over-year increase.
The company attributed much of its growth to landing exclusive content that enticed viewers, including every season of “ER,” “King of the Hill,” “Lost” and “Family Guy,” among other network staples. “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Hulu’s trademark original series, was nominated for multiple Emmys last year, including the award for Outstanding Drama Series, but failed to bring home the prize like it did in 2017.
“In 2018, Hulu led the industry in attracting and engaging subscribers, building a powerful technology stack and cultivating a brand that both consumers and advertisers love,” Hulu CEO Randy Freer said in a statement Tuesday. “Looking ahead, Hulu is in the best position to be the #1 choice for TV – live and on-demand, with and without commercials, both in and out of the home.”

Disney and Comcast are battling to own big pieces of 21st Century Fox — including Fox’s 30% share in Hulu, which would potentially give the winning bidder majority control of the subscription-streaming service.
Randy Freer, a 20-year Fox veteran who was named Hulu’s CEO last fall, faces the task of building on the company’s momentum amid uncertainty about its long-term ownership structure, not to mention competing with megabucks-spending rival Netflix. Earlier this month, Hulu announced a major restructuring on his watch, which included the departure of chief content officer Joel Stillerman and top execs Tim Connolly and Ben Smith as well as the hiring of its first chief data officer, Jaya Kolhatkar.

Hulu’s Chief Content Officer Joel Stillerman is out, after just a year on the job. Stillerman’s exit is part of a restructuring at the streaming service, as content and distribution have now been divided into two separate groups: content partnerships and originals.
Craig Erwich remains as head of originals and will continue to oversee program development at Hulu. But insiders said the decision to switch up the company’s management structure is a nod to the fact that Hulu continues to expand its business in the content acquisitions and live pay TV spaces.
As part of the announcement, Hulu has named former TiVo exec Dan Phillips as its new Chief Technology Officer, while Walmart Labs’ Jaya Kolhatkar has been named Chief Data Officer, a new job at the company.

Hulu CEO Randy Freer has made a series of sweeping organizational changes, leading to the departure of three top execs — chief content officer Joel Stillerman, Tim Connolly, senior VP of partnerships and distribution, and Ben Smith, Hulu’s senior VP of experience.
Hulu’s content teams will now be organized into two groups: one combining live TV and subscription VOD content licensing, acquisition and business functions; and the other dedicated to original programming, led by Svp of content Craig Erwich, that will also manage Hulu’s relationships with creators, producers and studios.
Stillerman, who had overseen all of Hulu’s content strategy, is leaving one year after joining from AMC Networks. In announcing the changes, Hulu said it is conducting a search for an exec to head the new content partnerships group and is eliminating the chief content officer role.

Hulu has announced a sweeping reorganization today that displaced Chief Content Officer Joel Stillerman and two other executives in a broad realignment of its business. As the streaming service positions itself for the next wave of growth, Hulu said it will reorganize into four groups — subscriber journey, technology & products, content and advertising — and bring in new leadership to oversee some units.
Stillerman is leaving Hulu after being recruited just a year ago from AMC to expand the service’s original slate. Also departing with the reorganization are Svp Partnerships & Distribution Tim Connolly and Svp Experience Ben Smith, while Svp Content Craig Erwich, who led Hulu’s transition from low-budget programming to such ambitious, high-end dramas as The Handmaid’s Tale, will oversee original programming.

Haywire (2011) Film Review, a movie directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Angarano, Matthieu Kassovitz, Natascha Berg, Aaron Cohen, Maximino Arciniega, Tim Connolly, Anthony Brandon Wong, and Eddie J. Haywire is an action film on a diet. The dietary aspect of the film, much like late 80’s and early 90’s action films, is one of expected and delivered simplicity. This is not necessarily a bad thing as some found the complexity of Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible detrimental. Unlike plot-heavy Salt and style-infused Hanna, Haywire can be summed up as: Guy grows jealous of girl, guy tries to kill girl, girl goes after guy.
There is a brutal, complicated swiftness to the first fight scene of Haywire that is never duplicated again in the film, not even in a later hotel room battle. What...

Haywire First 5-Minutes, Gina Carano Opening Fight Scene. Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire (2011) first five minutes stars Gina Carano and Channing Tatum. The Haywire opening fight scene starts out one way then quickly turns towards the other but not because of what the viewer initially thinks. The scene has no cheesy fight music thus only the ambient sounds of the fight and the diner exist. I read a few people comment on Gina Carano’s acting on other sites but they seem to have forgotten two thing: 1.) She has never studied acting in her life, 2.) This is her first movie.
