The story of MTV is set to be rolled out in a new podcast series hosted by former VJ Dave Holmes.
Audacy Podcasts is launching Who Killed the Video Star? The Story of MTV, an eight-part series that launches today, March 27.
“MTV is still on the air in 2024, and it’s still profitable, but my nieces and nephews know it as a logo on an Urban Outfitters t-shirt. I wanted to know what happened, and where the spirit of MTV exists now,” said Holmes.
The series will explore the cultural history, impact, legacy, and phenomenon of MTV and looks at what it turned into.
Holmes, who previously hosted Waiting for Impact, the wild story of boy band Sudden Impact, is hosting with guests including former VJs such as Julie Brown, Damien Fahey, and Kevin Seal, former MTV News correspondents Gideon Yago, Chris Connelly, and Suchin Pak, former Viacom Music and Entertainment Group president Doug Herzog,...

In the late 1980s, a group of grumpy music journalism vets and fresh-faced 20-somethings came together for a radical media experiment: the launch of a cable news division programmed for, and largely run by American youth. On May 9, 2023 — 36 years after its inception — Paramount announced that the fruits of their labor, MTV News, had been shuttered for good.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to many of MTV News’ star reporters — Kurt Loder, Tabitha Soren, John Norris, Alison Stewart, Chris Connelly, SuChin Pak and Gideon Yago — and visionary executives Doug Herzog and Ocean MacAdams to reminisce about the glory days of the outfit, where one day you might be hanging backstage with Prince in Paris, the next chasing a pre-White House Bill Clinton through the snowy streets of New Hampshire.
For each of them, it was a bittersweet journey they were more than happy to take.

Thirty-six years after MTV News was created to expand the stable of programming that defined the cable channel MTV, it is no more.
MTV News was shuttered this week as part of larger layoffs at parent company Paramount Global.
What launched as a single show in 1987 (The Week in Rock, led by correspondent Kurt Loder) eventually became a bona fide news outlet for Gen X and older millennials who found that traditional TV programming on the broadcast networks and CNN wasn’t cutting it.
Correspondents like Loder, Tabitha Soren, SuChin Pak, Gideon Yago, Alison Stewart and others covered music, pop culture, politics and other topics with an eye toward the younger generation that was tuned to MTV, rather than the network evening newscasts.
Along the way MTV News created some pop culture moments itself, perhaps none moreso than in 1994, when President Clinton appeared on MTV’s Enough is Enough, a...

Based in the Us for the past three years, Kieran Darcy-Smith had not seen the Jack Irish telepics when he was offered the gig as set-up director of the spin-off series starring Guy Pearce as a former criminal lawyer turned private investigator and debt collector.

We were all pretty disappointed when J.C. Chandor, the terrifically talented helmer behind last December’s A Most Violent Year, fell off oil rig explosion drama Deepwater Horizon, but it appears that the director may have settled on a new project. Reteaming with A24, he’s producing and has plans to direct an adaptation of Vicky Ward’s book The Liar’s Ball, about the history of New York’s famed G.M. building.

The script, which will be written by Manhattan and The Newsroom scribe Gideon Yago, heavily features Harry Macklowe and explores his fight to own and redevelop the G.M. HBO has renewed "The Newsroom" for a second season, but that doesn't mean that everyone involved in the making of the divisive drama will be coming back. The Daily reports that Sorkin has laid off most if not all of his writing staff: Most of the writers on the cable drama about a Keith Olbermann-type television news demagogue have been fired, sources with knowledge of the show told The Daily. "They're not coming back, except for Sorkin's ex-girlfriend [Corinne Kinsbury]," one source said. What this means for the show is unclear -- a look through the six episodes HBO has announced (four of which have now aired) reveals that Sorkin is credited as the sole writer on all of them, except the election-centered episode three, on which he shared credit with former MTV News host Gideon Yago. Sorkin, not exactly renowned for his collaborative nature when it comes to writing, told...

The Newsroom was hit by layoffs today: The Daily reports that Aaron Sorkin has fired most of his writing staff, which consists of under ten people. "They're not coming back, except for Sorkin's ex-girlfriend [Corinne Kinsbury]," said The Daily's source. Sorkin is known to be a very hands-on writer who scripts or co-writes every single episode, so it's unclear whether the laid-off staffers will be replaced or whether Sorkin will go it (mostly) alone. But what of Gideon Yago, we ask? Whither Gideon?...

After being at the helm of the series premiere, Greg Mottola returns back to the director’s chair of The Newsroom this week, which starts with yet another lengthy monologue. Will opens his programme with an apology for his previous broadcasts, claiming no excuse for their sloppiness in reporting actual news and outlining to his viewers the kind of news programme he and Mackenzie are now striving to make successful. However, as usual, the network bodies are getting in the way.
There’s a nice structural play which goes on in this week’s episode, Sorkin and co-writer Gideon Yago interweave the goings on of the newsroom with a meeting that is retrospectively looking over those events. We hope you like a little sci-fi with your Emmy-winning drama, because that's exactly what AMC has in store for you.
In the wake of (ironic) The Walking Dead's run-away (also ironic) success, AMC has put its efforts into developing new science-fiction drama Voyage, which follows the "realistic" tale of an ambitious female scientist and her team at the Jet Propulsions Labratory making legitimate first contact with an Alien race.
Sony TV and Lynda Obst will produce the project, based on a script by Breaking Bad and The Vampire Diaries writer John Shiban.
Voyage faces competion from five other prospective series for AMC to pick up to pilot, including record-executive family drama The Man with the Golden Ears and political scandal-thriller The Fourth Estate, written by former MTV correspondent Gideon Yago.

There is a lot of buzz building for three of the six AMC scripts that took part in the network's annual pilot script "bake-off" earlier this month: Voyage, The Man With the Golden Ears and The 4th Estate. In the "bake-off," six scripts identified by AMC brass faced off in a series of elaborate presentations, with the producing team for each project showing a promo reel and each creator pitching in detail the series beyond the pilot, including mapping out the first season. AMC brass are not expected to make a decision until the week of April 4, when they will probably pick up one or two of the scripts to pilots, but three of the six finalists have been getting a lot of buzz. Voyage, from writer/exec producer John Shiban, is described as a grounded look at human beings' first contact with extraterrestrial life seen through the eyes of...

Updated, 1/7: Each year, the five broadcast networks develop hundreds of scripted dramas and comedies in hopes they’ll become the next NCIS and Desperate Housewives, or the latest Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. And like every year, a great deal of them are not worth mentioning here — mostly because they involve the bland types of cops, lawyers, and doctors who you’ve already seen fighting crime or sneaking a kiss on the way to the ER.
But fascinating projects continue to pass the first smell test at the broadcast networks. The key is whether the suits take...

Tradition continues with Obama's youth town hall Thursday.

"If you had it to do over again, would you inhale?"
With that one question posed to then-Governor Bill Clinton, MTV officially announced itself as a player in the political process. That was back in 1992, when Clinton was still a White House hopeful and MTV had just launched its "Choose or Lose" campaign to inform, educate and encourage young people to grow from electoral spectators into active participants. During a network-sponsored forum, a young woman artfully posed that question of Clinton's prior marijuana use.
"Sure, if I could," the presidential candidate replied. "I tried before."
It was a disarming response from a talented politician on a hot-button issue. And it made clear that MTV could be a home for legitimate debate in a less stuffy, more youth-oriented way than was traditionally possible.

The Tribeca Film Festival has handed out its jury prizes, bestowing best narrative feature on Iranian Asghar Farhadi's "About Elly" and best documentary feature on Marshall Curry's Go-Kart doc "Racing Dreams."
Farhadi's tale examines a group of upper-middle-class Iranians on a seaside vacation and the relationships that form among them, while Curry looks at competitive Go-Kart racing among young people who dream of racing cars professionally.
The festival also gave its best new narrative filmmaker prize to Norwegian Rune Denstad Langlo, who directed "Nord," about a skier who has become a recluse, and its best new doc filmmaker award to Ian Olds, whose "Fixer" looks at the killing of an Afghani translator.
Best actor in a feature went to Ciaran Hinds for his role as a pensive widower in "The Eclipse." Zoe Kazan took best actress for her starring role in the John Hughes-esque coming-of-age dramedy "The Exploding Girl.

IFC has ordered a second season of its documentary series "The IFC Media Project,' which goes behind the scenes of how the news gets made.
Hosted by correspondent Gideon Yago, the five episodes will premiere in May and are produced by Meghan O'Hara and Nick McKinney ("The Daily Show," "30 Days").
"This is a truly important series that reveals what's really going on in our world today versus what the news media feeds consumers," O'Hara said. "In the new season we will take our exploration of news media even further as we venture across the globe to get the real stories behind current events, conflicts and disasters that may have made headlines, but the entire story was never told."
Season 2 will cover the conflict in Georgia, the "clean coal" debate and President Barack Obama's press relations and more.
