His parents were Barbara and Charles Barber, who were were heavily involved in a campaign to build a new theatre in Leeds, which opened as Leeds Playhouse in 1970. Nick is involved in classical music-making in and around Calderdale, Yorkshire. He plays in - and helps to run - the Orchestra of Square Chapel.
