Yami Gautam and Priyamani’s film ‘Article 370’ had a significant Monday at the box office, despite a slight decline in numbers, earning 3.60 crore in India. The movie is now approaching the impressive 50-crore mark globally.

On its fourth day, ‘Article 370’ maintained its hold, benefiting from reduced ticket rates on weekdays. The film aims for around 40 crore in its first week, building on its fantastic total so far: 6.12 crore on Friday, 9.08 crore on Saturday, 10.25 crore on Sunday, and 3.60 crore on Monday, totaling 29.05 crore in India.

Article 370 falls into a zone of The Kashmir Files and The Kerala Story, where nothing much matters in terms of promotional material apart from the trailer. The trailer that was revealed a couple of weeks ago was power-packed and did its job of raising curiosity. On the ground level, it helped create some sort of undercurrent.

Firstly, the name itself was enough to grab the eyeballs, and the second thing is that the present political scenario in the country suits the film. The kind of subject this Yami Gautam starrer deals with, it was always expected that debates and controversies would occur. Interestingly, that’s working as a main asset of this entertainer.

The ministries behind India’s newly launch Film Facilitation Office are starting a series of workshops next month to open the dialogue between the central, state and local governments and representatives of the film industry to talk how to make India more filming-friendly.

The New York Indian Film Festival (Nyiff) announced the full lineup last night for their 14th year of celebrating independent, art house, alternate, and Diaspora films from/about/connected to the Indian subcontinent (May 5 – 10) at the SoHo Tiffin Junction. Dedicated to bringing these films to a New York audience, the festival will feature 34 screenings (23 narrative, 11 documentary) –all seen for the first time in New York City.

The festival highlights various cinemas of India’s different regions – Marathi, Bengali and two films from the Northeast. In addition the festival covers cinemas from the neighboring South Asian countries – four films by Pakistani filmmakers, two from Sri Lanka – a feature and a documentary, and one from Nepal.

Akhon Nedekha Nodir Sipare (As River Flows) by Bidyut Kotoky’s will release in theatres today in Assam. Produced by the National Film Development Corporation (Nfdc), the film is shot in the background of Assam’s river island Majuli ravaged by insurgency and the kidnapping of activist Sanjoy Ghosh, who was first abducted in 1997 by the United Liberation Front of Asom (Ulfa) rebels from the river island and subsequently killed. A Hindi version of the film will be released soon with the same title.

A poem recitation made in 2010 by Assam’s renowned singer and balladeer Bhupen Hazarika is also a part of the film. Hazarika passed away on 5th November, 2011 in Mumbai. The cast of the film include Victor Banerjee, Sanjay Suri, Bidita Bag, Raj Zutshi, Nakul Baid and Naveed Aslam.

Now we tend to make films on people who are extremely complex and larger-than-life. But life can often be much simpler than that. In the film Pratiek plays somewhat of an Charlie Chaplain nice, even innocent guy who gets in all sorts of trouble with out even trying type character. Dar says, “In our films, nice guys always finish last. I always wonder why he can’t finish first. The film is about a common man who is sidelined but is still important.”
