Mark Zarate(1959-1998)

Mark Zarate was born on May 2, 1959. He grew up in Santa Fe Spring. He studied photography and television production at Rio Hondo College and illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. He worked eight years as a 2-D and 3-D visual effects artist, television technical director, and editor. He also worked on opening titles for Total Recall (1990) and Basic Instinct (1992). He was involved in the show opener for Fox's Front Page (1993), which garnered a BDA Gold in 1993.
In 1992, he helped form the creative effects firms Two Headed Monster and Oso Visual Effects. He was the visual effects supervisor on Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993), creating the comic book-type effects with 'Oso'. In 1996, He set up Ring of Fire with John Myers and Jerry Spivack and served as a creative director. He earned a 1998 Emmy nomination for his effects merging actress Brooke Shields into classic films for I Love You, I Think (1997).
He died on September 18, 1998 following complications from an appendectomy. He was survived by his wife and two sons, his parents, his grandfather, a brother, and a sister.
