Tony Leung Chiu Wai is one of the most recognizable Asian actors in the world, chiefly through his collaborations with a number of master filmmakers, including Ang Lee, Hou Hsiao Hsien, John Woo and Wong Kar Wai. Leung, who also has a career as a pop singer, has been praised by audiences and critics for his ability to wonderfully portray a plethora of different roles, a skill stressed by the fact that he can fluently speak Cantonese, English and Spanish.
His career reached its apogee from the end of the 80s, and Leung never actually deteriorated, with the astonishing parts coming one of the other. It is by no surprise then, that this year, he was presented with the Venice Film Festival lifetime achievement award

The Lunar New Year is a time of feasting and family gatherings. It’s also a time for new movies. China’s Lunar New Year film rush is on par with the holiday film rush in the West, with dozens of premieres jockeying to be the season’s number one blockbuster. In the Chinese queue for this year are films like Donnie Yen’s Kung Fu fantasy Sakra, The Wandering Earth II, the prequel to China’s visionary 2019 sci-fi, and the eagerly anticipated action comedy, Everything Under Control.
It often takes a few months for new Chinese films to cross the pond to the West, and they seldom get theatrical showings. However, Western theaters are becoming increasingly aware of the drawing power of the Lunar New Year and have begun to showcase some special releases in honor of the holiday. This year the U.S. market is treated to a...

By the end of the first film, while carrying on his apprenticeship as an eunuch in the Palace, the quick-witted and cunning undercover agent for the Heaven and Earth Society, Wai Siu Bo (Stephen Chow) soon earned the trust of the Emperor, after foiling a couple of schemes by rivals who tried to overthrow the Qing Dynasty. Back in the distant days of VHS (showing my age here) over in the UK, there was a video label “Made in Hong Kong”. As I began to watch Hong Kong movies, I would await the next release with true fan boy excitement. The promo trailer reel that would open the release would invariably start with one I’m about to review and as soon as the theme hits, you immediately just want to watch it. So, does it hold up now over 30 years after its original release or has its charm faded into the midst of time?

Tony Leung’s portrayal of Wenwu takes the MCU villain to a whole new level in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the latest feature film in the franchise. Wenwu is complex and textured as written, but veteran actor Leung gives the role such gravity, a level of depth that can only be reached by one of the world’s leading performers. Wenwu easily tops the ranks of MCU’s best villains, but it wasn’t always clear Shang-Chi‘s villain would be a hit. Originally in the comics, Shang-Chi’s father was the xenophobic Asian caricature Fu Manchu. Later, Fu was replaced with the Mandarin, another character that relied on racist stereotypes, so when the Mandarin was announced as the next MCU villain, it aroused concern. However, Iron Man 3 wisely spun the Mandarin to their advantage. Trevor Slattery (Ben Kingsley) became the Mandarin, and the character...

The title “Carry on Hotel” to an Englishman like myself brings back memories of the classic film series of the same name. These “Carry On” films were full of toilet humour and sexual innuendos and were considered icons of the British Film Industry. Hong Kong cinema equally has a frequent confrontation with the idea of taste; again toilet humour and obsession with sex are frequent features. Having experienced both of these styles over the years it would be inevitable that my interest would be piqued. So with curiosity (and a certain amount of trepidation) I decided to sit down and watch this and see if it lived up (or down) to my expectations.

Our cultural observations can prove to be quite fascinating, especially when it comes to reviewing films. What one might see, another sees something entirely different. “The Reincarnation of Golden Lotus” is a classic example. Reincarnation is more deeply rooted in Chinese culture than it is in the West. The past and present tend to walk alongside each other with traditions merging with modern day life whilst we in the West, tend to look more rationally and are not as ready to accept things. Watching a film such as this then gives an insight to this theme and to watch is to understand.
Lotus (Joey Wang) declines to accept forgetfulness before being reincarnated and only wants revenge on those that caused her death. Reborn as Shan in the midst of the cultural revolution, she is first raped by her teacher (Ku Feng) and betrayed by the object of...

For many, Chow Yun Fat will always be the cool, two gun wielding action hero. Whilst that is the image he certainly had in the West, it was not necessarily what he always portrayed. In fact, a lot of his features were comedies that proved more successful at the local box office than his action roles. “Diary of a Big Man” lets him showcase this other side of his talents alongside two of Hong Kong’s finest leading ladies. With the comedy of that region being notoriously broad and prone to sexism that makes a Benny Hill episode look enlightened, then a movie about a bigamist could go either way!
Chow Ting Fat (Chow Yun Fat) meets his dream woman Joey (Joey Wang), only to meet his other dream woman seconds later in Sally (Sally Yeh). Unable to decide between them, he marries both in separate ceremonies,...

When A Chinese Ghost Story premiered in 1987, it was already part of a unique category – the fusion of horror, comedy, and Kung Fu. Asian horror films are known as jiangshi, which is the name of a specific spooky hopping ghost found in Chinese folklore that proliferates these films.
Part zombie, part vampire, jiangshi are corpses that are usually reanimated by demons or Daoist sorcerers. They hop along mindlessly with their arms outstretched like sleepwalkers, and feed on the life essence – or qi – of the living. Often a jiangshi is blind but can smell breath. This makes for great comic hijinks as hapless characters struggle to hold their breath while gruesome jiangshi shove their rotting noses close to their mouths trying to pick up the scent.
Comedy is a common horror film device. It releases tension and leaves the audience unguarded for the next jump scare. The addition of Kung Fu...

“My Heart is that Eternal Rose” is a movie that proved to be an adventure to track down. In the mid-1990’s I got my first glimpse of it when the final reel was shown as the opening to the “Cinema of Vengeance” documentary that formed part of my initial education into Hong Kong cinema as an impressionable teenager. At the time, it was not easy to get hold of these movies in the UK and near enough impossible to track down a copy of this one, even imported. It was only years later that I finally got my hands on a re-released DVD copy and able to tick it off my wish list. Now out on Blu-ray, I am revisiting to see if it was still able to meet those expectations I had build up over the years.

"An overzealous application of CGI is the figurative boa constrictor squeezing the life out of The Sorcerer and the White Snake, a silly, derivative supernatural-action extravaganza that would have been better at a fraction of its f/x budget," argues Justin Chang in Variety. "Overblown saga of shape-shifting demons, butt-kicking clerics and the perils of interspecies romance occasionally dazzles but finally frazzles with its relentless visual assault, embedding Jet Li and his capable castmates in one screensaver-ready fantasy backdrop after another."
"The story of a woman demon who falls in love with a mortal will ring bells for Westerners as a charming variant on Hans Christian Andersen's Little Mermaid tale," suggests Deborah Young in the Hollywood Reporter, "though here the scaly mermaid is a huge, beautiful snake. With non-stop action to attract the lads, the tale is laced with enough overblown romanticism for ten chick flicks, yet chaste enough for children.
