- Began as an editor at Warner Brothers in 1942, eventually becoming that studio's youngest producer in 1952. He moved to 20th Century-Fox in 1956 and was noted for producing four Elvis Presley films.
- Was producing Valley of the Dolls (1967) when he died of heart failure while playing golf at the Brentwood Country Club with the film's director, Mark Robson.
- He has edited two films that have been selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant: Mildred Pierce (1945) and A Streetcar Named Desire (1951). He has also produced one film that is in the registry: Rebel Without a Cause (1955).
