Filmmaker David Weiner has a rather sunny disposition, but he’s spent the last few years in search of darkness.
The documentarian and veteran entertainment journalist is putting the final touches on In Search of Darkness: Part III, the concluding chapter in a trilogy of documentaries that explores the horror films of the 1980s (both the obscure and the classic).
The In Search of Darkness films, as well as Weiner’s sci-fi focused In Search of Tomorrow, have gained a small but dedicated fanbase, which has contributed to the funding of the films.
“We’re making this directly for the superfans who are in from the very beginning, helping define our trajectory,” Weiner tells The Hollywood Reporter.
Weiner never imagined he’d make a third installment of In Search of Darkness. After all, the previous two each topped four hours, so what more...

’80s Sci-Fi Doc ‘In Search of Tomorrow’ Explores How Theater Lobbies Were the Original Hype Machines
Click here to read the full article.
A week ago, genre fans descended upon San Diego Comic-Con to catch glimpses of films from Marvel and DC. Even those who didn’t attend were treated to trailers released online, instantly available in this glutenous age of fandom when publications — including this one — cover the ins and outs of sci-fi, superhero and horror films.
But back in the 1980s, audiences had to be patient. They had to wait, having nothing more than a movie poster to whet their appetites. Title. Tagline. Image. That was it, until the trailer eventually arrived (also in theaters).
The new documentary In Search of Darkness dives into the biggest ’80s sci-fi movies, and along the way it explores the way the theater lobby helped build anticipation for films such as The Wrath of Khan, Blade Runner and more.

Horror is in a class all its own, as we adoring fans know so well. Horror creates a film experience that can’t be replicated in any other space. Horror sits on the razor’s edge of innovation, making note of the line of decency before dancing across it. Politically, culturally, and in its very construction, horror is a bold and brassy corner of the film world. In Search of Darkness offers one of the most comprehensive journeys into every lovely facet of the genre, with over four hours of history and commentary to get swept up in!
In Search of Darkness chronologically investigates the best of the horror genre, from major theatrical releases to straight-to-video treasures, through its Golden Age, the 1980s. If it’s a subject that horror touches, it’s lovingly turned over and explored with all the care of an art historian and the fervor of the ultimate fan.

As a young man of about 11 years of age, I first truly discovered the magic of the movies. It was more than just the youthful awe of watching cartoons and fun family films. It was shortly after seeing Who Framed Roger Rabbit, my first motion picture in an actual movie theater, that I began to realize there was more to this than what meets the eye. The “how did they do this bug” really started to settle into my imagination and I haven’t turned back since.
From that moment in time, I found I could not satisfy my endless appetite for movies. Granted, my taste was relatively limited at first to PG and PG-13 titles, for the most obvious of reasons, but that would not last long. Before I knew it, I was “discovering” R-rated films and expanding my taste into action, horror and science-fiction fare. From there, the sky was the limit.

Like many of you, I grew up watching the incredible horror films of the ‘80s. There are so many horror movies from that era that have stuck with me throughout my life. There’s something about those films, a spirit to them that Hollywood has not really been able to replicate. They are a product of their time, and there’s a new documentary coming out called In Search of Darkness that pays tribute to these films and the fandom.
The doc is said to be the "definitive 80s horror documentary" that’s "bringing the Horror community together to celebrate the most iconic era in cinema history."
The film was directed by journalist and cinephile David A. Weiner, and it explores the '80s horror movies through the perspective of the actors, directors, producers, and SFX teams who brought them to life. It also explores the impact that these movies had on cinema.

"That sense of mortal fear is what the quintessence of horror is about." A trailer has launched for an indie doc titled In Search of Darkness, described as the "definitive 80s horror documentary" that is "bringing the Horror community together to celebrate the most iconic era in cinema history." Directed by journalist / cinephile David A. Weiner, the doc is an exploration of '80s horror movies through the perspective of the actors, directors, producers, and SFX craftspeople who made them, and their impact on cinema. Featuring interviews with people including Keith David, Joe Dante, Heather Langenkamp, Jeffrey Combs, Barbara Crampton, Greg Nicotero, Bill Moseley, Kane Hodder, Sean S. Cunningham, and many others. There are quite a few cinema history, and specifically horror, documentaries being made. This one looks like it'd be a great double feature with Horror Noire, which was released quite recently as well. Enjoy. Here's the official promo trailer for David A.
