Virginia Van Upp was a producer and screenwriter who worked her way up in the film industry after having been a script reader, script editor, casting director, and agent. She was married with one child when she was named Executive Producer of Columbia Pictures by Harry Cohn in 1945. A woman would not hold this post again for another thirty-one years.

With <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm0663832/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Harriet Parsons</a> and <a class="ipc-md-link ipc-md-link--entity" href="/name/nm0365661/?ref_=nmtrv_trv">Joan Harrison</a>, was one of only three women working as
contract producers for major Hollywood studios between 1943 and
1955.
