Before he was an actor he was training to be a Professional tennis player.

He won the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Theatre Awards 1997 for his portrayal of the dysfunctional and haunting teenager Cosmo Disney in Philip Ridley's The Pitchfork Disney.

When he was at school in Oxford he was taught by author Philip Pullman.
