Composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul just won their first Emmy Awards at Sunday night’s Creative Arts ceremony, making them the 20th and 21st people ever to achieve an Egot. They won in the Best Music and Lyrics category alongside Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for their catchy tune “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?” from “Only Murders in the Building.” They were up against song nominees from “Girls5eva,” “Saturday Night Live,” “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” and “True Detective: Night Country.” Enjoy watching our interview with Pasek, Paul, Shaiman and Wittman from earlier this summer.

The duo’s previous Egot wins began in 2016 when they, along with composer Justin Hurwitz, won the Oscar for Best Original Song for “La La Land.” They won the Tony in 2017 for their score from that year’s Best Musical champ, “Dear Evan Hansen.” In 2018 they won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for that same show.

Merrily We Roll Along, the smash Broadway hit starring Tony-winners Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe and nominee Lindsay Mendez, is being professionally filmed by RadicalMedia, the same production company that proshot and produced Hamilton and Come From Away.

A production insider tells Deadline that producers are indeed filming the show, but couldn’t confirm future plans like a TV broadcast, streaming or even a theatrical release. Hamilton was intended for a theatrical release but went to Disney+ due to Covid. Come From Away streamed on Apple TV+.

Rumors about a Merrily proshot have been circulating since last week, when those paper notices familiar to all New Yorkers were posted along 44th Street in Manhattan indicating that a filming would be taking place on Monday, June 17, and Tuesday, June 18. The block where the notices were posted is home to the Hudson Theatre, where Merrily plays.

The actor took home the Tony Award for best performance by an actor in a featured role in a musical for Merrily We Roll Along. Radcliffe portrays lyricist and playwright Charley Kringas in the revival of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s 1981 musical. The original production only lasted 12 days before shutting down.

“I’m gonna just talk fast and try not to cry,” Radcliffe began his acceptance speech. “This has been one of the best experiences of my life. It’s been unbelievable.”

Broadway’s busy, busy 2023-24 season has been building to this night for months, with new show after new show crowding the spring and making for what promises to be — in some categories anyway — a race tighter than the rock band of Stereophonic. Ok, maybe not that tight, but what is?

In all, 36 productions were eligible for competition — five new musicals, 10 new plays, six musical revivals, and five play revivals — with 28 actually making the nominations list. Steven Pasquale and Jeremy Shamos started working on the new Stephen Sondheim musical, Here We Are, seven years ago, while others, like Denis O’Hare, were asked to join the project last summer.

He has assembled an unrivaled ensemble to take on the roles of the unimaginably affluent characters who spend the first act trying to find a restaurant in which to have brunch, and who in the second act find themselves unable to leave after their meal.

I'm very amused that some people mistake "TÁR" for a biopic. It's surprising how many people have seemingly thought this, as one would think we would have heard about this woman prior to seeing this movie. However, I think this is a testament to writer/director Todd Field and actor Cate Blanchett for being able to craft such a densely layered character that her complexities, contradictions, and lived-in history could only come from a real source. Character studies this thorough and messy used to be a staple of American filmmaking, particularly in the New Hollywood era, but today, movies rarely afford the opportunity for a film to go so deep on one person, as these stories have mostly been shuffled off to television.

The Off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, will move to Broadway in the fall.

The production, directed by Maria Friedman, is currently playing a sold-out run at New York Theatre Workshop through Jan. 22. It came to New York after runs on London’s West End and at the Menier Chocolate Factory.

This is the first Broadway revival of Merrily We Roll Along, after it premiered on Broadway for a short run in 1981. The musical, which features a score by Sondheim and a book by Furth, follows three friends, played by Radcliffe, Groff and Mendez, and travels backwards through time to follow them over three decades of working in entertainment.

A revival of Sondheim’s Into the Woods is currently playing on Broadway and a revival of Sweeney Todd is planned for Broadway this spring.

As widely speculated, a new Broadway production of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler classic musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford will begin performances on February 26, 2023, at Broadway’s Lunt-Fontanne Theatre with an official opening night of March 26, 2023.

Directing will be Thomas Kail (Hamilton). The news was announced today by producer Jeffrey Seller, who is leading the revival.

Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

The production will mark the first time since 1980 that Broadway audiences will experience Sweeney Todd as it was performed in the original production, with a Jonathan Tunick’s original 26-player orchestration. Kate Horton, who previously ran the Royal Court Theatre in London and has held executive roles also at the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre, will take over for Scott Rudin as executive producer of The Music Man, the upcoming Broadway revival starring Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster.

With the hire, The Music Man confirms what has been expected since Rudin announced in April, amidst accusations of workplace abuse and bullying, that he would step back from his Broadway responsibilities. Other formerly Rudin-produced shows, including The Lehman Trilogy, The Book of Mormon and To Kill a Mockingbird, have announced their Rudin-less returns. West Side Story has not yet set a return date.

Casting for director Ivo van Hove’s upcoming Broadway revival of West Side Story was announced today by producers Scott Rudin, Barry Diller and David Geffen, with what they’re calling an unprecedented 23 actors making their Broadway debuts.

The production, with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s all-new choreography in place of the familiar moves of Jerome Robbins, begins performances on December 10 at the Broadway Theatre, with opening night set for February 6, 2020.

Sutton Foster, star of TV’s Younger and a two-time Tony Award winner, will co-star with Hugh Jackman in next year’s Broadway revival of The Music Man, Jackman tweeted this morning.

Jackman tweeted a photo of himself (see it above) dancing with Foster with the simple message, “For our next dance…@sfosternyc is #Marian @MusicManBway.” Producer Scott Rudin confirmed the casting.

Foster will play Marian Paroo, or, as one of the show’s songs puts it, “Marian the Librarian.” The role was played by Barbara Cook in the 1957 original production, and by Shirley Jones in the Shirley Jones in the 1962 film version.

Sunday’s Creative Arts Emmys saw the crowning of three new Egot winners, with John Legend, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice becoming the latest to win the industry’s biggest four awards.

All three earned the honor by winning an Emmy for variety special for NBC’s “Jesus Christ Superstar, Live in Concert,” with Legend as producer and Lloyd Webber and Rice as the composer and lyricist of the original 1970 musical. The entertainment industry grand slam known as the Egot is so rare that only 12 people in history have completed it by winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony. And no calendar year has seen more than two new Egot winners.

But that could change this year, because Television Academy voters have nominated five different people who only need an Emmy to complete their Egot — and three of them could win at the same time if “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” takes home the award in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category.

Those three are John Legend, who starred in the title role of the Easter Sunday special on NBC, and Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, the composer and lyricist of the original 1970 musical.

We’ve unearthed the running order of the 2018 Tony Awards hosted by Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban on CBS on Sunday, June 10. Over the course of upwards of three-and-half-hours, winners will be announced in 26 competitive categories. Below is the order in which the 72nd Tonys will unfold.

The eight design awards will be handed out in the half hour before the show goes live at 8 p.m. Et as will the Tony for Best Orchestrations. Those winners will be showcased throughout the telecast, with inserts of their acceptance speeches.

As usual, the first award on the broadcast will be one of the featured acting races (this year it is on the musical side of the aisle) while the show closes with a big one, Best Musical. In between, the winners of the other 15 Tonys races will be revealed as detailed in the presentation order below.

The 2018 Tony Awards take place on Sunday, June 10 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall.
