Sporting a grey WGA-branded “strike” t-shirt, writer-director Charlie Kaufman led a packed-out masterclass this morning in the main hall of the Bosnian Cultural Center at the Sarajevo Film Festival.
The Being John Malkovich writer is in town to receive the Bosnian festival’s career achievement award, and during his masterclass, he offered a strong condemnation of the current Hollywood studio system and urged filmmakers to find new ways to create work.
“At this point, the only thing that makes money is garbage. It’s just fascinating. It makes a fortune, and that’s the bottom line,” Kaufman said. “It’s very seductive to the studios but also to the people who engage and become the makers of that garbage, especially if they’re lauded for the garbage because they don’t have to look inward or think long about what they’re doing.”

Writer-director Charlie Kaufman is set to be honored with the Sarajevo Film Festival’s career achievement Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Award during the festival’s upcoming 29th edition.
As part of the award presentation, Sarajevo will host an open-air screening of the Kaufman-penned Adaptation, directed by Spike Jonze and starring Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Tilda Swinton, and Jay Tavare.
From Sarajevo’s statement announcing the award, it appears Kaufman will attend in person to receive the award, but it remains unclear whether the filmmaker will participate in press interviews and to what extent he will discuss his work with the WGA strike ongoing.
WGA and SAG regulations around appearances at festivals are complicated. The rules forbid members from promoting any work completed for a struck company. The wait is finally over ladies and gentlemen! One of this years most anticipated horror films is finally here! Yep, Tom Six (I Love Dries) has finally unleashed The Human Centipede 3: Final Sequence upon the world. When I watched parts 1 & 2 upon initial release, I was rather underwhelmed, but upon revisiting the films prior to the third and final chapter in the trilogy, I found myself enjoying the films for what they are. I won’t go in to detail because if you’re reading this review, you have already seen them. Needless to say, the films were brutal with an original concept that made Dieter Laser (John Gleuckstadt) amd Laurence R. Harvey (The Editor) household names and horror icons.

Digital Spy presents Games on Film, a look back at the numerous (and quite often disastrous) movies based on video games. How closely do they stick to their source material, and how well do they hold up on their own merits?
Previous Games on Film: Super Mario Bros | Resident Evil
Street Fighter (1994)
Back in 1993, Street Fighter II was just about the coolest video game on the planet. Its genre-defining gameplay and colourful characters had made it the busiest coin-op in arcades across the globe, and creators Capcom saw in it the potential for a huge cross-media franchise, starting with a big screen adaptation.
Capcom wanted the film turned around fast in time for Christmas 1994 and hired action screenwriter Steven E de Souza (Commando, 48 Hrs, Die Hard) to write and direct the film in what would be his first and only directing job in Hollywood. A slapdash cast was assembled, propped...

In two decades of working in film and television, I had never participated in a reality show, although I can see the appeal of them and the addiction that some shows inspire. However, all of that changed early this year when I was approached to help a BBC America show get on the Mescalero Apache reservation in New Mexico to shoot an episode of their new and highly anticipated show, No Kitchen Required, a mixture of Survivor meets Amazing Race meets Chopped.
Three masters of the culinary arts -- Chef Michael Psilakis, Chef Kayne Raymond, and Chef Madison Cowan, who was the overall winner of the Chopped series -- travel to ten exotic locations around the world, meeting the indigenous people of the land. They must hunt and prepare a meal using the traditions of the local people. The catch is, they have no kitchen. They are cooking the tribal way.

Not to be confused with the Sonny Chiba starring Street Fighter series from the 1970s, Street Fighter from 1994 is based on the popular fighting games from Capcom, but is also known for a few too many things I’m sure director Steven E. de Souza couldn’t have foreseen back then. Besides being a box office success (as hard as that is for some people to believe) and the beginning of the end of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s reign at the box office in the 1990s, the film was ridiculed for its light tone, serving as a source of why video game adaptations don’t work, and marred by the death of its villain Raúl Juliá, who died before its release.
Still, time has been kind to the film, as it has become something of a fan favorite for the qualities critics once spat upon, as evident in its profitable DVD and now Blu-ray sales.
