- He played Dr. Pangloss and Voltaire in the Harold Prince 1973 Broadway revival of Leonard Bernstein's "Candide". This was the production that finally made the show a long-running hit (it ran for two years). It featured a new libretto by Hugh Wheeler, more faithful to Voltaire's original story and style than Lillian Hellman's original 1956 libretto. Wheeler's version is now the standard version used in stagings of the musical. It also had added lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.

- (March 21, 2013 - June 16, 2013) Co-starring with Nathan Lane and Cady Huffman in a new play, "The Nance", in a limited run at Broadway's Lincoln Center Theater at The Lyceum in New York City. Coincidentally, Stadlen has often played the role of Max Bialystock Nathan Lane made famous in the Broadway mega-hit musical, "The Producers".

- (1996) He acted in Stephen Sondheim's musical, "A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum," at the St. James Theatre on Broadway in New York City with Nathan Lane, Mark Linn-Baker, Ernie Sabella, William Duell, Mary Testa, Jessica Boevers, Cris Groenendaal, and Jim Stanek in the cast. Jerry Zaks was director.
