You may know Martin Starr as the acerbic engineer Bertram Gilfoyle from Silicon Valley. Or the judgemental screenwriter Roman DeBeers in Party Down. Or maybe you just recognize his face: that dude from the Judd Apatow universe, the one with the rectangular eyeglasses and a deadpan expression. He’s used to it by now. “More often than not, I just get the look of familiarity without specificity,” says Starr, 42. Flying under the radar has kept him humble. “When they were like, ‘We want you to interview this guy,’” he asks me,...

Taylor Sheridan’s comedy-drama series Tulsa King presents a unique mixture of comic and crime elements on TV. The Sylvester Stallone starrer showcases the journey of Dwight Manfredi, a former American Mafia caporegime who is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma.
The character undergoes various trials and errors as he works hard to start his criminal empire from scratch at the new location. The show’s setting called for a detail-oriented costume design which introduced viewers to the land. The former showrunner, Terence Winter also included his special wish to see one character dressed up in Austin Powers’ style, which made fans speculate if Sheridan greenlit the decision.
The special focus on costume design and its inspiration
Paramount’s Tulsa King presents its characters in the relatively unexplored backdrop of Oklahoma’s Tulsa. Like Dwight who is played by Sylvester Stallone, most of the audience was also unaware of the place’s charms and aesthetics.

“Tulsa King” faces the same challenge confronting every location-driven TV show: in some way, it must make its setting feel interesting enough to rope in viewers unfamiliar with the place and its culture. Its initial premise does most of the work immediately: New York gangster Dwight Manfredi (Sylvester Stallone) is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he decides to build a new mob from scratch. Viewers can instantly relate to Manfredi’s fish-out-of-water circumstances — many of them have no concept of Tulsa, making it feel vaguely foreign despite its geographic proximity to American audiences.
“Tulsa King” immerses us in part by trading generic establishing shots of the city’s sparse skyline for gliding glances at the iconic Mayo Hotel and street-level peeks up at Tulsa’s few skyscrapers. Equally crucial to the show’s believability, though, is the way the characters dress. Costume designer Susan McCabe recognizes that, for many viewers,...

From ‘Curb’ to ‘The Comeback,’ HBO knows comedy.
Writing a list of the top HBO comedy TV shows of all time is hard because it’s subjective. It may not be the high school reunion we’ve wanted, but Freaks and Geeks creator Paul Feig, producer Judd Apatow, writer/star of the show Seth Rogen and other cast members pay tribute to the nostalgic show that is still viewed as gone too soon by many fans — old and new — as the show would only last one season. The NBC dramedy series was a high school show set in the 80s and featured a cast that would go on to become notable names in future projects, including Linda Cardellini, James Franco, Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, John Francis Daley, Samm Levine, Martin Starr, and Busy Phillipps.

Plot: Dwight and his crew continue to build up and defend their growing empire in Tulsa, but just as they get their bearings, they realize that they’re not the only ones who want to stake their claim. With looming threats from the Kansas City mob and a very powerful local businessman, Dwight struggles to keep his family and crew safe while keeping track of all his affairs. Plus, he still has unfinished business back in New York.

I was skeptical about Tulsa King when it came out in 2022. The series seemed like the ultimate dad television show, featuring a weathered ’80s superstar that children’s grandparents talk about. From Rambo to Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, Stallone’s films made over a billion dollars in the ’80s without today’s special effects.
Stallone’s dive into streaming television paid off handsomely. The first season was well received. Tulsa King, created by the minds behind Yellowstone and a former head writer of The Sopranos, does a masterful job of toggling between visceral violence and ominous black comedy.
In short, Tulsa King remains the brass-knuckles-bruising comedy we have come to love despite its considerable flaws.

It’s not every day that you get to sit down with someone like Terence Winter, the mastermind behind Tulsa King.
A veteran of shows like The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire, Winter has proven time and again that he’s a force to be reckoned with when it comes to gritty, character-driven dramas.
And with Tulsa King, Winter has created yet another gripping world led by none other than Sylvester Stallone. As we gear up for Season 2, Winter is ready to dive into what’s next for Dwight Manfredi and his expanding empire.

After a wildly successful first season, many fans have been left wondering: how do you top that?
According to Winter, the answer is simple: “You keep Stallone front and center.” He continues, “We had one of the greatest stars in the world at the helm of it, so we kept him on the show.

It’s almost time to head back to the seedier side of the Sooner State as Tulsa King returns for its second season at Paramount+ next month. The streamer has revealed the first look at the Sylvester Stallone-anchored crime dramedy, and it looks to pick up right where the show left off. Here’s what we know about Tulsa King Season 2 so far. When is Tulsa King Season 2 premiering? The sophomore season of the series will debut on the streamer on Sunday, September 15 and drop new episodes weekly each Sunday until November 3. Who stars in Tulsa King Season 2? Sylvester Stallone reprises his role as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, an Invernizzi family capo who is sent to start a new life in Tulsa after spending a quarter century behind bars for the underboss (who he got revenge against in Season 1). Also returning for Season 2 are Martin Starr as Lawrence “Bodhi” Geigerman,...

New episodes of Yellowstone are right around the corner! Yellowstone season 5 part 2 premieres on Nov. 10, 2024. In fact, the new trailer for the series just dropped, too!
It’s been so long since the first half of Yellowstone season 5 ended on Jan. 1, 2023. Almost two years will have passed by the time all six episodes in season 5 part 2 air. And, unfortunately, you do have a fair bit of time until the show returns.
Luckily, we picked out seven shows like Yellowstone to watch while you wait for Yellowstone season 5 part 2! We didn’t include 1923 or 1883 for obvious reasons, but we highly recommend watching those, as well!

One upcoming Marvel show will feature Amadeus Cho, one of the Hulk's successors in Marvel comics, officially debuting for the first time in the MCU.
Interestingly, Martin Starr's character in The Incredible Hulk was actually named Cho in the novelization of the movie. However, that has since been retconned, with him playing the same character in The Incredible Hulk as he does in the McU's Spider-Man movies.
Not only does this choice to retcon make sense logically, given Starr's larger role as Mr. Roger Harrington later in the franchise, but it also allows for Amadeus Cho to not be whitewashed in the MCU, as Amadeus Cho is Korean-American.

Freaks and Geeks brought ‘90s teens some of the most relatable lines on television (bangers like “I don’t need another friend. I’ve got two”) as well as helped launch the careers of budding comedy legends Busy Phillips, Jason Segel and Seth Rogen, to name just a few.
Other famous Freaks and Geeks alums include — take a deep breath — Linda Cardellini, John Francis Daley, Martin Starr, James Franco, Sarah Hagan, Samm Levine, JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Rashida Jones, David Krumholtz, Lizzy Caplan, Shia Labeouf, Ben Stiller, Leslie Mann, Mike White, Jason Schwartzman, Ann Dowd and Shaun Weiss.

Too bad the 1999 show with a nearly-perfect script and cast was slashed by NBC after only a single season, but its tragic cancellation earned it cult classic status. 50 years after missing out on a part in Francis Ford Coppola's gangster epic The Godfather, Sylvester Stallone's mobster dreams finally came true with Paramount+ series Tulsa King, co-created by Yellowstone mastermind Taylor Sheridan. As Dwight Manfredi, a fresh outta prison capo tasked with rebuilding his life and criminal empire out in Oklahoma, Stallone deftly balanced the show's ambitiously varied genre leanings — between comedy and drama, Western and crime thriller — in a way audiences, well, couldn't refuse. Now, after *that* cliffhanger S1 finale, the man they call The General is back to fight for his Tulsa King throne in the show's hotly anticipated second season. And if the first trailer's anything to go by, it's looking set to be another knockout from the guy who gave us Rocky. Check it out below:

Dwight “The General” Manfredi is coming back with a vengeance.
Sylvester Stallone returns to the mean streets of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the new season of “Tulsa King” on Paramount+. The Taylor Sheridan-created series — which was run by Terence Winter in Season 1 before pivoting to a more collaborative ensemble of writer/producers working without a showrunner for Season 2 — has released its first trailer, which sees the New York mafioso facing a new set of foes in the land where the buffalo roam.
Season 1 of “Tulsa King” followed Stallone’s Manfredi as he leaves prison after serving a 20-year sentence while refusing to testify against his mob associates. But changes to the family power structure during his time inside left him with an icy welcome upon his release. Rather than returning to the fold in New York, he’s sent to Tulsa to set up a new crime empire from scratch.
