Konstantin Stanislavski, the father of modern acting, famously said, “There are no small parts, only small actors.” Isabella Rossellini speaks to this quote with determined ferocity.
Rossellini’s captivating seven-minute, 51-second appearance in Edward Berger’s 120-minute religious thriller “Conclave” could be enough to earn the veteran actor the first Oscar nomination of her career.
Portraying Sister Agnes, a nun who quietly maneuvers within the Catholic Church’s power struggles as it faces the monumental task of selecting a new pope, Rossellini’s restrained yet powerful turn is generating awards buzz for supporting actress. While some Oscar pundits may question if her limited screen time will be a hurdle, her role aligns perfectly with the original intent of the supporting categories, established at the 9th Academy Awards in 1936 to recognize impactful, secondary performances.

In fall 2024, Netflix has released a number of new original movies. From Christmas rom-coms to chilling thrillers, the streamer has kept our watch lists stocked for plenty of movie nights. On Nov. 13, one of the buzziest movies of the year finally arrived on Netflix for streaming ahead of the competitive award season rush. But is Emilia Pérez worth watching?
The movie comes from writer-director Jacques Audiard and probably isn't quite what most moviegoers will be expecting. First of all, Emilia Pérez is a Spanish-language musical that falls under the comedy genre though there are also crime and drama elements, too. Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez headline the film with their already award-winning performances.
Here's how Netflix describes the movie in its official synopsis:

At its heart, Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s unclassifiable transgender Mexican cartel telenovela musical, is a film about transition, transformation and rebirth.
The transformation is not just that of Juan “Manitas” Del Monte, a Mexican drug kingpin who longs to escape a life of violence and death and undergoes gender affirming surgery to become her true self: the glamorous, vivacious Emilia Pérez. (The magnetic Spanish trans actor Karla Sofía Gascón plays both roles).
Emilia Pérez is also the story of the transmutation of Zoe Saldaña. The Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy star finally gets to inhabit her own skin on the big screen, neither blue nor green, as Rita Moro Castro, an overworked, overlooked defense lawyer closing in on 40 who has spent her career keeping unrepentant cartel slime out of prison. Manitas gives her an offer she can’t refuse: Help me transition, relocate my family and organize my disappearance,...

What makes a great musical? The immediate things that come to mind are obvious: singing and dancing. But the beauty of a well-choreographed ensemble number, or the power of a stunning duet don’t mean so much if the lighting is poor or the lensing isn’t up to snuff. That’s where the cinematographers come in. The musical films of this year show off the best versions of what the genre can be.
Wicked takes themes of light, dark and color to the extreme for a unique vision of Oz. Musical numbers take control of the images in Emilia Pérez. And anything goes in Joker: Folie à Deux, where fantasy and reality meet in the middle.

Can “Emilia Pérez” deliver Netflix its first Best Picture Oscar? Will Zoe Saldaña be its only win? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the crime musical Oscar hopes and more.
“Emilia Pérez,” now streaming on Netflix, has been a top Oscar contender since premiering at Cannes, where writer-director Jacques Audiard won the Jury Prize and its quartet of actresses — Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, Selana Gomez, and Adriana Paz — shared the Best Actress award. It currently sits in fourth place in the Best Picture odds and is competitive in multiple above-the-line and below-the-line categories, so why does it feel like it could get as few as five nominations and as high as double digits?

Musical crime comedy film Emilia Pérez is getting the recognition it deserves after fans praised its unique and captivating storyline paired with groovy musical elements – something Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker: Folie à Deux missed big time!

Everyone knows the unfortunate fate of the Joker 2 movie and it’s quite obvious now what caused its downfall. Apart from deviating from the source material, the musical approach did not help convey its message.

Selena Gomez’s Emilia Pérez received a limited theatrical release early this month before it debuted on Netflix on November 13 in the US, UK, and Canada. Even though it has yet to receive a schedule for its worldwide release, fans are already going crazy about it.

Editor Juliette Welfling has come to expect the unexpected from director Jacques Audiard. She’s cut all 10 of his French films, but “Emilia Pérez” (now streaming on Netflix) is the most experimental yet. The crime thriller/family drama marks their first musical. Welfling was naturally drawn to the operatic nature of the music (Clément Ducol composed the original score and French singer Camille wrote the original songs), but was most impressed that it was a modern fable.
“Often his films are about families and crimes as well, but there’s nothing realistic in this movie, it’s about anything,” Welfling told IndieWire.
“Emilia Pérez” stars Zoe Saldaña as Rita, a disgruntled lawyer fed up with the corruption in Mexico City, who assists drug lord Manitas Del Monte in undergoing gender confirmation surgery to become the titular woman (both played by Karla Sofía Gascón). It’s like a musical fever dream about transformation with gaudy,...

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Netflix opens “Emilia Pérez” in theaters on November 1 before the film streams November 13.
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen a movie musical where the words “mammoplasty, vaginoplasty, rhinoplasty” play out in song. Nor have you lived until you’ve seen that same movie musical in which Selena Gomez says the words “My pussy still hurts when I think of you.” And you’ve never seen a movie musical at all about transness that takes as bold of swings as Jacques Audiard‘s “Emilia Pérez,” which is stylistically unforgettable while missing the crucial element that makes any movie musical work: Actually good, memorable songs.

It's a pretty impressive feat for an actor to be able say that they've contributed to three of the biggest movies in box-office history, but it's a claim that has certainly come at a cost for Zoe Saldaña. The star of "Lioness" and Netflix's "Emilia Pérez" was recently asked about her lucky streak stint in franchise films that saw her as Neytiri in James Cameron's "Avatar" movies as well as Gamora in the "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies along with "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame." When asked if she'd ever go back to those kinds of roles, the former Guardian gave one stipulation on returning to that kind of world.
"I can't ever say that I won't ever go to space," Saldaña told Vanity Fair, having also played Uhura in the rebooted "Star Trek" franchise. "I love being in space. I would like to just be a human in space.

‘The Substance,’ ‘The Girl With the Needle,’ ‘Emilia Pérez’ Among European Film Awards Craft Winners
Coralie Fargeat’s body horror movie The Substance, Jacques Audiard’s Mexican crime musical Emilia Pérez and Magnus von Horn’s Danish period drama The Girl With the Needle are among the first winners of the 2024 European Film Awards, picking up Efa Excellence Awards in the technical categories.
Benjamin Kračun won best cinematography for his lensing of The Substance, a campy feminist fable starring Demi Moore as Elisabeth Sparkle, an aging celebrity who takes a dangerous drug that promises to restore her youth. The Efa jury praised Kračun’s use of “highly stylized lens distortions and manipulations” to explore Sparkle’s physical and psychological demise. “It is loud and glossy, but also manages to eke out an unexpected intimacy and vulnerability. The audience is transported through to an unbearably painful, and hilariously raucous ending.”

Grande plays a young Galinda Upland in Universal Pictures’ adaptation of the long-running Broadway stage musical. While attending Shiz University, Galinda takes a new student under her wing, the misunderstood Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), and tries to teach her how to be less of an outcast. Jon M. Can people really change? Under its many layers — musical, crime drama, trans self-actualization story — that’s the simple question at the heart of Emilia Pérez.
For Karla Sofia Gascón, who stars in the title role, that meant embodying a radical transformation — leaving behind her life as a cruel cartel chief, and emerging as Emilia Pérez, her true, most authentic self.
Emilia isn’t the only character in the film who wants to change her life. Enter Rita, played by Zoe Saldaña. “Rita is an accomplished lawyer who lives in Mexico City and is at a point in her life where she wants more than what her job and her environment can offer,” Saldaña told Netflix. Disgusted by the cartels and their hold over Mexican life, Rita nevertheless helps Manitas transition and hides her family away in Switzerland; then she takes her payout and hits the road. Editor’s note: This story was originally published during the 2024 Telluride Film Festival. “Emilia Pérez” is now in theaters and starts streaming on Netflix November 13.
French auteur Jacques Audiard has been flirting with musical moviemaking ever since “Self-Made Hero” in 1996, when he and composer Alexandre Desplat discussed adapting that film into an opera. But it wasn’t until Audiard read a friend’s novel, “Écoute,” that he responded to the idea of a Mexican drug kingpin transitioning to become a woman. In that case the cartel boss was trying to escape from his life, not his gender.
“So the novelist actually introduces this character, but then doesn’t fully develop it,” said Audiard at the Telluride Film Festival, where the Cannes prize-winner “Emilia Pérez” played well at multiple screenings and generated serious Oscar talk going into its September 9 presentation at the Toronto International Festival. “I’m fascinated by the paradox...

Mark Ruffalo, Will Ferrell, Harper Steele, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Brittney and Cherelle Griner were all honored at the ACLU of Southern California’s Bill of Rights Awards on Sunday, in a night that focused heavily on Donald Trump’s election win and the future fight for civil rights.
Ruffalo, who campaigned heavily for Kamala Harris and is among Hollywood’s most outspoken activists, took the stage at the Beverly Hilton and admitted to the crowd, “We got our asses kicked. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, but sometimes you have to spend a little time in bed before it happens. It was hard to come here, honestly.”
“The fact that we’re here says a great deal about what we all care about in this life, and I want to appreciate you all for your values and the grief and the fear that you most acutely may be feeling as well,...

“Special Opps: Lioness” has given Zoe Saldaña more than a juicy role as a CIA intelligence officer, it’s given her a friend in co-star Nicole Kidman. That’s especially the case in Season 2, an installment that groups the two powerhouses in more scenes together than ever before.
“It’s so rewarding. I get to call her a friend. We have so many things in common — our dedication to our work, but primarily our dedication to our families,” Saldaña told TheWrap.
For “Lioness” on Paramount+, the two stars shared a makeup trailer. Saldaña portrays Joe, while Kidman plays her boss Kaitlyn Meade, a high-ranking member of the CIA’s Lioness program. “In the mornings, we’re constantly talking about what we’re going to be doing, in addition to breaking from our work and talking about personal things.”
The two are so close, they once had a little fun after encountering a difficult scene.

A note from Scott: Well, it’s been a week. The presidential election did not break the way that most members of the American and global filmmaking communities would have preferred, which — low on the overall list of things to be thinking about but relevant to what we cover here — may well jolt the mood and priorities of Academy members as they contemplate what to support this season. We’ll have more on that soon.

[Editor’s note: The following interview contains some spoilers for “Emilia Pérez.”]
“Emilia Pérez” begins and ends in darkness — literally and figuratively.
The latter comes courtesy of writer/director Jacques Audiard and his audacious script, which delves deeply into the prisons we make for ourselves and for others based on expectations, perceptions, and self-deceptions. As Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofia Gascón) transitions from cartel boss to a champion of those whose lives were lost to cartels, her attorney Rita (Zoe Saldana) matures into a woman with a satisfyingly successful career but a wisp of a personal life, and Emilia’s ex-wife Jessi (Selena Gomez) — who does not know that Emilia has undergone gender-affirming surgery — steps from a gilded cage into one even more dangerous. As their lives and relationships intersect and collide, cinematographer Paul Guilhaume takes the film from dark to sunny to a dark night of the soul come to life in the desert.

Sean Baker‘s “Anora” stars Madison as a Brooklyn stripper who gets married to a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn) in what’s being dubbed a “modern-day Cinderella story.” The film is currently Gold Derby’s Best Picture frontrunner at the 2025 Oscars, and it received a major boost earlier this year when it claimed the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.
Prior to “Anora,” Madison appeared in popular projects like “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood” (2019), “Scream” (2022), and “Better Things” (2016-22). She currently leads Gold Derby’s Best Actress Oscar odds, where her co-nominees are likely...

When I first saw the 2009 Star Trek, I was struck by the linguistic superpowers of that film's Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana). They were familiar to me. It wasn't simply that this ability often arises in science fiction and fantasy. It's that there was another prominent character in Star Trek who had this ability. I am speaking, of course, of Hoshi Sato (Linda Park).
I was a bit irked by this at the time, as I was 13 and thus easily irked. I got over it. When 2022's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds premiered, however, and introduced us to a linguistically gifted Cadet Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) who wasn't quite sure if she belonged on the Enterprise, I found myself asking again, "Are they turning Uhura into Hoshi?"
To be clear, there is absolutey nothing wrong with being Hoshi Sato. As a fan of linguistics and general word nerd myself, Hoshi is...

Virginie Montel, the costume designer for the future musical film “Emilia Pérez,” shows how clothes can be used as a powerful storytelling tool to follow the complicated journey of characters as they deal with identity and personal change.
The movie, directed by Jacques Audiard, is about a lawyer named Rita (Zoe Saldaña) who helps a drug lord escape and then gets surgery to change her gender to become Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofía Gascón). The story turns interesting when Emilia later goes to London to find her ex-wife Jessi (Selena Gomez).
Montel’s outfit design becomes a language of change that can be seen. She said, “The theme of Emilia Pérez is evolution. “Not only does Emilia transition, but Rita and Jessi transform themselves throughout the film.”
When people meet Rita for the first time, she’s wearing a grey suit, which represents how uncomfortable she is initially. Montel intentionally dressed...
