Mark Ruffalo, Will Ferrell, Harper Steele, Viet Thanh Nguyen, and Brittney and Cherelle Griner were all honored at the ACLU of Southern California’s Bill of Rights Awards on Sunday, in a night that focused heavily on Donald Trump’s election win and the future fight for civil rights.

Ruffalo, who campaigned heavily for Kamala Harris and is among Hollywood’s most outspoken activists, took the stage at the Beverly Hilton and admitted to the crowd, “We got our asses kicked. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, but sometimes you have to spend a little time in bed before it happens. It was hard to come here, honestly.”

Mikey Madison will accept the coveted prize during this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival — specifically at their awards show on Jan. 3, 2025, at the Palm Springs Convention Center. The film festival itself runs from Jan. 2-13.

Sean Baker‘s “Anora” stars Madison as a Brooklyn stripper who gets married to a Russian oligarch (Mark Eydelshteyn) in what’s being dubbed a “modern-day Cinderella story.” The film is currently Gold Derby’s Best Picture frontrunner at the 2025 Oscars, and it received a major boost earlier this year when it claimed the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Paramount+, the streaming service of Paramount Global, will launch two new subscription tiers in the U.K. and Ireland on Nov. 20, its basic (with ads) and premium plans. They will join the standard tier.

The basic (with ads) tier will be priced at £4.99 ($6.45) per month in the U.K. and €5.99 ($6.45) a month in Ireland, while the premium plan will cost £10.99 ($14.19) and €11.99 ($12.90) per month. When I first saw the 2009 Star Trek, I was struck by the linguistic superpowers of that film's Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana). They were familiar to me. It wasn't simply that this ability often arises in science fiction and fantasy. It's that there was another prominent character in Star Trek who had this ability. I am speaking, of course, of Hoshi Sato (Linda Park).

I was a bit irked by this at the time, as I was 13 and thus easily irked. I got over it. The movie, directed by Jacques Audiard, is about a lawyer named Rita (Zoe Saldaña) who helps a drug lord escape and then gets surgery to change her gender to become Emilia Pérez (Karla Sofía Gascón). The story turns interesting when Emilia later goes to London to find her ex-wife Jessi (Selena Gomez).
