Harald Roebbeling was born in Vienna, Austria in 1905, his father Hermann was an actor in the Burgtheater there and later its director. Harald followed in his footsteps with acting lessons and first appeared on the stage at age 20, at the Thalia theater in Hamburg, Germany.In the thirties he worked as a writer, editor and assistant director and after WWII founded his own company in Austria. He alternated between directing film, where he was not always successful, and plays. From 1954 to 1955 he was invited to make some of the Stacheltiere shorts in the DDR, these were satirical sketches named after the animal the porcupine which poked fun at aspects of life in East Germany.Roebbeling's last feature was in 1959 but he lived for another three decades, passing away in 1989.
