Presented by Paramount Scares, Friday the 13th Week sees Bloody Disgusting heading to Camp Crystal Lake for a series of features that celebrate the Voorhees family and their influence. Yesterday, Rachel Reeves highlighted other camp-adjacent scares. Today, Luiz H.C. takes inventory of all the horror movie fans in horror similar to franchise hero Tommy Jarvis.

Writers may come up with nightmares and directors bring them to life, but everyone knows that it’s the horror fans that really keep the genre going. That’s why it’s always refreshing to see scary movies show some appreciation towards the community, like that time Jason Voorhees was (rather brutally) defeated by a young monster movie enthusiast played by Corey Feldman, aka Tommy Jarvis.

In light of the 40th anniversary for both Jarvis and Friday The 13th: The Final Chapter, we’ve come up with a list celebrating six other badass horror fans in horror movies.

Thirty-nine years after they made the vampire classic Fright Night (watch it Here) together, several members of the film’s cast are set to reunite with writer/director Tom Holland – and will be joined by special guests Mark Hamill and Rosario Dawson – for a live reading of the script! This event has been put together for Table Read, which is an award-winning podcast, a top charter on Apple Podcasts, and Realm partner. We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

It’s not even October, but Massachusetts is already being spoiled with horror events. A mere week after Silver Scream Con took place in Danvers, Terror Con slashed into the Royal Plaza Trade Center in Marlborough on September 15-17.

Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, had the longest lines throughout the weekend. He was joined by several other A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise alumni: Part 1’s Heather Langenkamp, Amanda Wyss, and Ronee Blakeley; Part 2’s Mark Patton and Kim Myers; Part 4’s Lisa Wilcox and Nicholas Mele; Part 5’s Erika Anderson, Whit Hertford, and Beatrice Boepple; and Freddy vs. Jason‘s Monica Keena.

Now that Renfield is available on Blu-ray and DVD, I think a lot of people will be kicking themselves for not sinking their teeth into the horror-comedy on the big screen. The home video release boasts an hour of making-of featurettes and deleted/extended scenes, plus an audio commentary with eight crew members.

The track features producer Samantha Nisenboim, screenwriter Ryan Ridley, makeup effects supervisor Christien Tinsley, visual effects supervisor James E. Price, assistant editor Noah Cody, supervising sound editor/sound designer John Marquis, supervising sound editor Nancy Nugent, and supervising digital colorist David Cole.

Here are eight things I learned from the Renfield commentary…

1. Using footage from the original Dracula was Adam McKay’s idea.

Maybe it will reach more of an audience when it receives a digital, Blu-ray, and DVD release on June 6th – and Universal is doing their best to make sure viewers will check it out, giving it a “Dracula Sucks Edition” release that will be packed with extras!

Based on a treatment written by The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, Renfield was directed by Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) from a screenplay by Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty). In Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, R.M. Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan steal all their scenes in Ari Aster’s “Beau Is Afraid” as Roger and Grace, a quack surgeon and his compassionate do-gooder wife who’ve fallen on hard times and take in Joaquin Phoenix’s neurotic mommy’s boy after Grace accidentally (or does she?) mows him down with a van. The veteran character actors had not previously worked together, despite meeting all the way back in 1987 when Lane was in the national tour of Neil Simon’s “Broadway Bound.”

“She was dating the young man who was playing Eugene, William Ragsdale,” Lane told IndieWire over Zoom. “I watched her become this superb actress, and then we were on ‘Only Murders in the Building’ but we didn’t have any scenes together, so I was thrilled that we finally, finally after all these years had gotten to work together.”

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield (read our review Here), starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, didn’t light up the box office when it reached theatres last weekend. So far it has only pulled in just over $12 million… and those are the worldwide numbers. So there probably aren’t a whole lot of you who have seen the movie to know that the dance sequence Hoult shared on social media last Friday is a deleted scene… but trust us, the dance sequence isn’t in the movie. W​ith the release of Renfield, Nicolas Cage gets to fulfill one of his bucket list roles. He stated that the three roles he wanted to play eventually were Superman, Captain Nemo, and Dracula. He missed his chance for Superman but has at least knocked Dracula off his list. Now that the film has been released, we can see all the fun references to the Dracula lore. The font and style of the Renfield poster mimics that of the original poster. In the film, we see scenes from the original film recreated using the modern actors portraying the characters. Now playing in theaters, Universal’s Renfield uses the original Universal Monsters classic Dracula (1931) as the jumping off point for a brand new adventure, dissecting the not-quite-healthy relationship between Dracula and his loyal servant, R.M. Renfield. But the original Dracula isn’t the only fanged horror classic that Renfield pays loving homage to.

An early scene in Renfield shows Nicolas Cage’s Dracula taking a vaporous form and entering the body of an elderly priest through the mouth, quite literally exploding the priest’s body apart. What you may not have noticed is that the ill-fated priest was played by the star of another classic vampire movie. Yes, that’s William Ragsdale, star of 1985’s Fright Night!

Universal’s Dracula comedy Renfield, starring Nicolas Cage as Dracula and Nicholas Hoult as his titular lackey, is set to reach theatres next week, on April 14th, and while the primary draw is the chance to see Cage play Dracula, the movie also includes a couple special treats for fans of the horror genre. Among the cast members are Caroline Williams, best known for playing the heroine Stretch in 1986’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and William Ragsdale, who previously crossed paths with vampires in 1985’s Fright Night and the 1988 sequel Fright Night Part 2. Williams is playing a character named Vanessa, while Ragsdale takes on the role of Older Priest. Nicholas Hoult has had enough of working for Dracula in the new trailer for “Renfield”.

Hoult stars as Dracula’s henchman, Renfield, who “wonders what life would be like without serving his dark master” in the newly-released teaser.

Nicolas Cage takes on the role of Dracula, who turns up at the end of Hoult’s therapy session at the end of the teaser in all his glory to devour some more victims.

Renfield says at the start of the clip, “I need to get out of a toxic relationship,” before turning to those in the group session for support, unbeknownst to them who he was really talking about.

“I just want a normal life again,” Hoult says as Dracula barks his orders.

At one point in the teaser, Hoult uses his superpowers to fight some robbers with guns in a bar.

Knock at the Cabin is the 2023 upcoming horror movie produced and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Starring Dave Batista, Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge, among others. It is based on the novel by Paul G. Tremblay ‘The Cabin at the End of the World‘.

It is scheduled for theater release on February 3rd, 2023.

Well ladies and gentlemen, we’re basically two-thirds of the way through October, and you know what that means. It means the Season of the Witch is upon us. All Hallows’ Eve. The time when death and dismemberment and ghosts and goblins and monsters of all types go mainstream, and every product suddenly grows pumpkin spice crazy. I swear I saw a can of pumpkin spice insect repellant in the supermarket the other day. Or maybe that was just a hallucination.

Friday night is morphing into Fright Night for the Michigan Democratic Party.

With just five days to go before Election Day, the cast from the 1985 cult classic are gathering for a virtual live reading of the script along with special appearances by Star Wars star Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson and self-proclaimed Fright Night superfan Michael Rosenbaum. The event, scheduled for 8 p.m. Et, will raise funds for the party in the swing state.

Friday night is morphing into Fright Night for the Michigan Democratic Party.

With just five days to go before Election Day, the cast from the 1985 cult classic are gathering for a virtual live reading of the script along with special appearances by Star Wars star Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson and self-proclaimed Fright Night superfan Michael Rosenbaum. The event, scheduled for 8 p.m. Et, will raise funds for the party in the swing state.

It’s been a while since I penned a Which is Better article on here, so, as seen as Summer is making me wish Autumn was here, and I’m counting down the days for the Halloween season, I figured I’d go back to two of my favourite vampire movies ever, and pit them against each other in this almost-pointless-because-it’s-subjective-anyway battle of evil versus evil, vamp versus vamp. Even as a kid, I was always super precious over my favorite horror movies. So, when Fright Night Part 2 was released, let’s just say that 11-year-old Heather was less than enthused. Thankfully, I’ve come to my senses over the last several decades and now recognize that the Fright Night sequel, when judged entirely by its own merits, is actually a super fun creature feature that exploits Charley Brewster’s healthy libido by utilizing a seductive temptress named Regine to torment him as he does his best to distance himself from the events of the original Fright Night in an effort to move forward with his life.

And that’s the thing I didn’t really understand at the time: that the world of Fright Night was moving forward, too, whether I was ready for it or not, and while it was a bitter pill for me to swallow some 30 years ago,...

As a kid, while I loved every possible monster out there, I was a total vampire nerd through and through. I’m not sure what it was that completely drew me in—perhaps it was their power, their bloodlust, their uninhibited nature, or even their immortality—but vampires were where it was at, as far as I was concerned during my childhood. We’re back to dissect another remake and this time we’re taking a bite out of a vampire movie. The original version was a classic but the remake does not quite measure up. This week, Cinelinx looks at Fright Night (2011).

When the remake of the classic vampire film Fright Night (1985) came out in 2011, the initial reaction was very positive because it was such a relief to have truly evil vampires back. After the brooding and sparking vampires of Twilight started a trend of angst-ridden or lovelorn or depressed vampires, fans were thrilled that the blood-sucking antagonist of director Craig Gillespie's new Fright Night remake and his fellow vamps were hard-core predators with no reservations about chowing down on their next-door neighbor. The Fright Night creatures-of-the-night were more Dracula than Edward. It was good to have the badness back. However, upon reflection, the 2011 version doesn’t hold up that well.
