In a stark debut from Leo Leigh, Maggie O’Neill meets a mysterious biker and discovers his son is a narcissistic YouTuber and wannabe dancer
This bleak, stark debut feature from writer-director Leo Leigh bears the obvious influences of his parents Mike Leigh and Alison Steadman; it has a barbed cartoony unhappiness, a depiction of its characters verging on caricature and misanthropy but not quite, and the notes of redemption offered at the end are ambiguous. It is not a theatre of cruelty so much as a theatre of mockery; a world where a lot of the time absurd people are laughing at the absurdity of others, partly – but not wholly – because of how unhappy they are.
Leigh allows us to see how the tonal sourness challenges the adjective in the title. Maggie O’Neill plays Sue, a woman who runs a (depressing) children’s party shop hiring out balloons and banners,...

“Brits don’t like boasters,” Rob Lowe’s high-flying U.S. cop Bill Hixon is told in the first trailer for ITV drama Wild Bill. He responds by calling East Lincolnshire a “godforsaken cabbage patch,” which nicely sums up the fish-out-of-water series.
The West Wing star plays Hixon, who is appointed Chief Constable of the East Lincolnshire Police Force in the UK in the ITV series, which launches in June. The series is produced by 42, Shiver and Anonymous Content.
Lowe’s Hixon is an analytics expert, a Moneyball-for-police type and he is in Lincolnshire to help bring down the crime rate, while also dealing with his troubled young daughter.
The show was created by The Hunted writer David Griffiths and then Awake creator Kyle Killen came on board with Silent Witness writers Dudi Appleton and Jim Keeble. Lowe acts as an exec producer as well as on-screen star.
He told Deadline earlier this year,...

Maxine Peake is magnificent in Adrian Shergold’s unflinching drama about a standup on the 70s northern club circuit
There are several moments in this astringently uncomfortable tragicomedy – which boasts a blistering central performance by Maxine Peake – that will leave audiences squirming and divided. Funny Cow follows the changing fortunes of a standup comic finding her feet in the northern working men’s clubs of the 70s. It has been described by writer and co-star Tony Pitts as “an unblinking obituary” and “unsentimental commentary” on the culture in which he grew up. Some will be shocked by Peake’s “Funny Cow” (we know her only by her stage name), winning round hostile audiences with un-pc gags that were once the backbone of the British club circuit. Others will simply nod in resigned recognition at this hard-knocks world in which “it’s not about being funny, it’s about surviving”.

MaryAnn’s quick take… This is scorched-earth cinema that challenges us to find moments of grace and triumph among misery, cruelty, and emotional frugality. Maxine Peake is absolutely incendiary. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m desperate for movies about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto) women’s participation in this film
(learn more about this)
There are movies — rare as they are — about women who do not compromise and make no apologies. And then there’s Funny Cow, as blistering and caustic a film about a no-bullshit woman clawing her way through a man’s world as I’ve ever seen.
This faux biopic of an unnamed (fictional) famous stand-up comic (Maxine Peake) “presumes” that the audience is already aware of who she is, and so it’s not about her work; this is most definitely not a comedy.

A woman who has a funny bone for a backbone. Entertainment One UK has debuted an official trailer for the indie comedy Funny Cow, starring English actress Maxine Peake as a comedienne in the 70s making her mark on the male-dominated stand up scene. Peake recently starred in the black-and-white "Metalhead" episode of Netflix's "Black Mirror", which is where some people might recognize her from, even though she has been in many films before this. Set against the backdrop of the 70s/80s comedy club circuit in Northern England, Funny Cow stars Peake as fictional comedienne "Funny Cow", trying making a name for herself in the stand up world. The full cast includes Paddy Considine, Christine Bottomley, Stephen Graham, Alun Armstrong, Tony Pitts, Hannah Walters, and Kevin Eldon. This film actually looks quite good. Here's the first international trailer (+ poster) for Adrian Shergold's Funny Cow, direct from YouTube...

"When I come back through that door, I'm still going to be champion of the world." This trailer is worth a watch. Studiocanal UK has unveiled the first UK trailer for Journeyman, the new film written & directed by English actor Paddy Considine (he last directed the acclaimed Tyrannosaur in 2011). Journeyman tells the story of a world champion boxer named Matty Burton, also played by Paddy Considine, who struggles with life after a head injury that leaves him almost completely debilitated. The cast includes Jodie Whittaker as his wife, along with Paul Popplewell, Tony Pitts, and Anthony Welsh and others. This premiered at the London Film Festival, where I first saw it and wrote a glowing review of the film. As you can see with this trailer, it's not so much about boxing as it is about the struggle of mental illness. See below. Paddy Considine and Jodie Whittaker star in Journeyman. Here's the first trailer...
This looks really, really good. Paddy Considine has directed one film thus far, the superb Tyrannosaur. For his second, Journeyman, he’s telling the story of a boxer who collapses after a particularly bruising fight, and consequently has to fight to regain his speech, his relationships, and his life.
Considine stars in the film too, alongside Jodie Whittaker, Anthony Welsh, Tony Pitts and Paul Popplewell. And the first trailer and official synopsis have been released.

We’ve been waiting a while for Paddy Considine to get back behind the camera following his excellent and underrated BAFTA-Award winning “Tyrannosaur.” Well, the time has finally arrived as he’s pulling off triple duty writing, directing, and starring in “Journeyman.”
Also featuring Jodie Whittaker (“One Day”), Faraz Ayub (“Honor”), Tony Pitts (“War Horse”) and Paul Popplewell (“’71”), beneath the boxing drama surface of the movie lies the story of a pugilist who has to rebuild his entire life after suffering a traumatic brain injury in the ring.

One of those intriguing but raggedy films that ultimately adds up to less than the sum of its promising parts, British comedy-drama Funny Cow stars Maxine Peake (The Theory of Everything) as an irrepressible working-class lass finding her feet as a stand-up comic in mid-century Northern England.
Working off a script by actor Tony Pitts, who also plays the protagonist’s abusive husband, veteran TV director Adrian Shergold (Pierrepoint: The Last Hangman) boldly blends expressionist flourishes (actors playing multiple roles, stylized framing) with hard-grit realism. Cornerstone Films announced this week that multi-talented writer, director, and actor Paddy Considine has found his next filmmaking gig, the boxing drama “Journeyman.” Considine directed the excellent and underrated BAFTA-Award winning “Tyrannosaur,” and his second feature continues his collaboration with producing partner Diarmid Scrimshaw of Inflammable Films. Currently in pre-production and shooting in early March, Considine wrote the screenplay, will direct it and will also star. Jodie Whittaker (“One Day”), Faraz Ayub (“Honor”), Tony Pitts (“War Horse”) and Paul Popplewell (“’71”) will form the main members of the supporting cast. Here’s the official synopsis: Journeyman is a powerful and beautiful story about loss and, ultimately, triumph. It's about our identity, and how in life we sometimes have to dig deep into our soul to discover who we really are. Matty Burton is the middleweight boxing champion of the world. Now, coming towards the end of his career,...

Coming off her well-deserved Oscar nomination for 45 Years, Charlotte Rampling has found a new project. Screen Daily reports that she’ll be leading an adaptation of Jane Austen‘s Sanditon, the first time it will come to the screen. Directed by Jim O’Hanlon and scripted by Simon Reade, it follows a summer at a sea bathing resort in which society can be seen at play. Production is set to kick off this summer for a likely 2017.
We’ve been patiently waiting for Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz, Macbeth) to follow up his impressive directorial debut Tyrannosaur with another feature and now it looks like he’s finally settled on one. THR reports he’ll direct and write Journeyman, a boxing drama starring himself as a world middleweight boxing champion who takes on one last fight and succumbs to a coma, but is then awakened and must deal with the repercussions.

Hyena is a gritty, brutal crime drama, but sadly, not one that really works.
Gerald Johnson's London crime drama Hyena stretches the definition of 'good copper' by some distance. Our anti-hero, Michael Logan, is not morally upstanding as much as he is competent and the film is open about that from the very beginning.
