It all started when Rob Reiner tried to convince Albert Brooks to let him film his own version of “My Dinner with Andre” titled “My Lunch with Albert Brooks.” His high school chum refused. After someone else came to Brooks wanting to make a documentary about him, the financing fell through. Then the men decided to combine the two things.
“There’s about 4000 documentaries now,” said Brooks at an FYC event with Reiner and moderator Judd Apatow this week at the Academy of Motion Pictures. “It’s the way they’re willing to spend money without spending real money. Everyone has a story and 99 out of 100 are done pretty much the same way. Either the person’s no longer living, or they’re being talked about from an off-stage voice. So to be able to do that this way…that’s what makes it special. Because it’s Rob and...

Re-releases reliably dot the theatrical calendar and this week have a standout. Oldboy, the 2004 Cannes prize-winner, re-released by Neon on its 20th anniversary restored and remastered, grossed $235k on Wednesday and $150k Thursday — for a total cume $385k on 250 screens heading into the weekend.
San Francisco, NYC and LA, led by Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, are the top-performing cities so far for Park Chan-wook’s classic film — the first screening in U.S. theaters since its original North American release in 2005.
Oldboy follows Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-sik), who, after being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, is released but must find his captor in five days. The critically acclaimed film is the second installment of Park’s The Vengeance Trilogy, preceded by Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and followed by Lady Vengeance (2005). There have been funny male stripper movies (The Full Monty), auteur-directed male stripper movies (Magic Mike), Black male stripper movies (three Chocolate City films). Now comes Back on the Strip, yet another attempt to wrest humor and drama from the spectacle of scantily clad men gyrating to audiences of wildly appreciative women. The independent film receiving a wide release definitely leans toward the funnier end of the spectrum, with its overqualified cast including many formidable comedic talents. But despite some amusing moments, it never really takes off, burdened by a tiresome romantic subplot that periodically stops the movie dead in its tracks.
The story revolves around Merlin (Spence Moore II), whose name stems from his lifelong desire to pursue a career as a magician. His supportive single mother Verna (Tiffany Haddish), who narrates the proceedings, encourages him in his dreams and roots for him when he makes an appearance at a local talent contest.

It would come as no surprise to learn that “Back on the Strip” started out as a “Magic Mike” parody. I’m not saying that it did. But what else could explain the bizarrely literal premise of an ensemble indie comedy in which our hero is a wannabe magician who heads to Vegas hoping to be the next David Copperfield, only to wind up shaking his wand for a Chippendales-style male dance revue instead?
What makes “Strip” so consistently funny for most of its too-long two-hour running time isn’t Merlin’s lame prestidigi-dream (that part feels like co-writers Chris Spencer and Eric Daniel have been watching too many Nickelodeon movies) but the sorry state of his fellow dancers: a has-been crew called the Chocolate Chips. That fairly original hook allowed the filmmakers to round up an A-list lineup for this C-grade endeavor. The movie features everyone from Tiffany Haddish...

"It's time for you to get on stage, and do it your way!" Gvn Releasing is handling the US opening of this comedy titled Back on the Strip, made by writer / actor Chris Spencer. While it's not made explicity clear in the trailer, this seems like a spoof of the Magic Mike movies, with an old crew of male strippers coming back for a revival show in Las Vegas. "The Chocolate Chips" must get together again to help out a friend of theirs, a magician named Merlin, who is sent by his mom to Vegas to get his act together. The old crew features Wesley Snipes, Jb Smoove, Gary Owen, Bill Bellamy, and Faizon Love (the funniest one in this), along with Spence Moore II, Tiffany Haddish, and Raigan Harris. This looks like it has some good jokes and funny lines, but it also looks extremely cheesy, especially set in Vegas.

If you didn’t Meet The Blacks in 2016, they’re back this weekend in Deon Taylor’s second horror-comedy installment.

Dallas Jackson and Michael Jai White have begun production on Welcome to Sudden Death, a reboot of the 1995 action flick Sudden Death. This time around Mjw will be joined by comedian Gary Owen to add a buddy-action flick element to the reboot. The original film starred Jean-Claude Van Damme who played a former fireman who took on a group of terrorists holding the Vice President hostage during game seven of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Basically it took the Igloo in Pittsburgh and turned it into the Nakatomi building. But if featured ice hockey so for us Canadians that was pretty... uh... cool. They are also filming this new version in Winnipeg which is a pretty mental hockey town. All our hockey towns are...

Jean-Claude Van Damme’s classic 1995 film Sudden Death is getting a remake thanks to Netflix and writer and director Dallas Jackson (Thriller). The film will be called Welcome to Sudden Death and it’s described as being “martial arts heavy …with a comedic twist.”
Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite, Tyson) and comedian Gary Owen (Daddy Day Care, Get Hard) are set to star in the film and it’s obviously taking a new spin on the subject matter.
There’s no word on what the story will entail, but the original film featured Van Damme as a fireman “who interceded when terrorists snatch the U.S. Vice President during the seventh game of the NHL Stanley Cup.” I assume the new film will tell the same story, but in a more comedic way.
Netflix has scheduled the film for June 2020 release. What do you think about Sudden Death getting a comedic remake?...

Dallas Jackson, best known as writer-director-producer of Blumhouse’s urban slasher Thriller (2018), begins filming his sophomore project this week in Winnipeg as production begins on Welcome to Sudden Death for Universal 1140 and Netflix. Netflix has scheduled the film for a June 2020 release.
Michael Jai White and comedian Gary Owen lead the cast in a feature described as “martial arts heavy …with a comedic twist.” Welcome to Sudden Death will be a “new spin” remake of Sudden Death (1995), which starred Jean-Claude Van Damme.

Stand-up comedian Gary Owen became the first white person to star in a Bet series when “The Gary Owen Show” premiered on the network back in October, but it’s not something the comic thinks of as a big deal. “You don’t think about it when you get the show, though,” the comic told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell. “You’re just happy to have a show … As a comic, any network you’re excited. Think Like a Man Too
Written by Keith Merryman and David A. Newman
Directed by Tim Story
USA, 2014
The opening lines of Kevin Hart’s voiceover wax philosophical on the history of Las Vegas, but they’re less an introduction to Think Like a Man Too so much as a restatement of what is obvious to anyone in the audience: this is Kevin Hart’s movie. The massively popular comedian’s ubiquity is no secret (see: Hart discussing his pro wrestling reawakening with Jon Stewart) and his presence in Tim Story’s 2012 half-adaptation of Steve Harvey’s sex advice book Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man all but guaranteed his return for any sequel.
But, beyond the serious box office legs of the original, why a sequel? Think Like a Man begins with Hart’s same overly-enthusiastic narration, though the original sports a quick-witted dissection of monogamy and...

Chicago – Date night at the movies has a new alternative to the summer sci-fi and animation with “Think Like a Man Too.” The sequel to the popular first film has a burst of creative juice from an energetic cast, and dares to do something different with the bachelor party in Las Vegas theme.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
What distinguishes the film is that the women – putting on their own bachelorette event in Las Vegas – in many ways outdo the guys. Part of the is due to the very funny Wendi Covey-McLendon (the grossed out Mom in “Bridesmaids”) who gets her freak on and steals every scene. But also, there is the super-hot personality of Kevin Hart, in collaboration with director Tim Story, who keeps the proceedings loose and entertaining. From the beginning to the end, with Hart and Story the conductors, the guys and gals of “Think Like a Man Too” just want to have fun.

Chicago – Sequels just need a dose of energy and creativity, and then they work. The cast of “Think Like a Man Too” – including Kevin Hart, Regina Hall and Terrence Jenkins – provide that energy, as the gang from the first film heads to Las Vegas for a competing bachelor and bachelorette parties.
