Nijenhuis is the first Dutch director awarded with five Platinum Films. He started in television, making a career as show runner. At the age of 25 he pushed the daily prime time soap opera "GTST" to the top of the ratings.
His cinema debut "Costa!' propelled him to direct over 16 feature films. Nicknamed "king of the rom-com" he shifted his focus from teen romance to coming-of- age films.
Nijenhuis is the director that holds most Golden Film Awards and most Platinum Film Awards in the Netherlands, based on box office results. Critics praised "The Marriage Escape", resulting in receiving the Critics Award in 2020.
