Joy Mukherjee directed 4 films but his only successful directorial venture was 1977 film Chhailla Babu starring Superstar Rajesh Khanna in the title role. The suspense thriller was a golden jubilee hit.

Jo Mukherjee's career as the leading man ended with romantic icon Rajesh Khanna entering the scene in 1967 hit Baharaon Ke Sapne. Till then Joy was paired opposite Asha Parekh in 4 blockbusters.

Love in Simla launched the career of both Sadhana and Joy Mukherjee, Interestingly both the actors have done around 33 films but have been part of at-least 19 famous super-hit movies.Sadhana has total of 26 box office hits of 34 films she did and Joy had total of 19 hits of which 18 had him as the solo lead hero and only one hit film as a villain(Insaaf Main Karoonga).

Joy Mukherjee's career as the leading star had its peak period from 1960-1968. His films with him in the lead failed at the box office from 1968 onwards till 1977. His films like Puraskar and Ehsan in 1970, Ek Bar Mooskura Do in 1972, Insaaf Main Karoonga in 1985 were the only hits in period post 1968.

In 1977, after Joy's directorial venture Chhailla Babu became a golden jubilee hit, Rajesh Khanna promised him that he would get Joy to do an offbeat role in one of his films in future. Khanna fulfilled this promise by giving Joy the villains role in Insaaf Main Karoonga.

Rajesh Khanna was going through a bad phase in his career where some of his good films were box office flops in the period 1976-1978. It was in this period that Joy offered him the suspense thriller Chhailla Babu.

Joy Mukherjee is one of the few actors in Indian Cinema who have their first and last film both as super hits. He had his debut film as a super-hit in 1960. He played a villain in Insaaf Main Karoonga in 1985 which was a super-hit at the box office too.

Joy did only 32 films as an actor in his career but 20 of them were super-hits at the box office. His only films as a supporting actor was as a villain in Insaaf Main Karoonga, which was also a box office success and in Phoolan Devi. Also played supporting role in Ummeed 1989 TV Show.

Joy played the main solo lead in 29 films of which 19 were box office success.
