“Oppenheimer” has burst into the Oscar race.
With the earnest and urgent cultural fabric of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the philosophical measure of “The Tree of Life,” writer, director and producer Christopher Nolan’s chronicle of the creation of the most destructive weapon ever used stands as the most ambitious and vital piece of filmmaking of his career. Adapted from the book “American Prometheus” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin, “Oppenheimer” tells the complicated and morally fraught story of American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer who led the effort to develop the atomic bomb.
Nolan and his stellar ensemble of actors have amassed 27 Oscar nominations collectively throughout their careers. One of those who surprisingly hasn’t nabbed one is Irish actor Cillian Murphy, who plays the titular scientist. With dry wit and womanizing charm that effectively makes him the scientific version of Michael Fassbender in “Shame,” Murphy is an...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.
Daylight Savings coming to an end alongside that brisk autumn chill means awards season is finally here. So get your brand new MoviePass ready and your route to your local indie theater cleared. For those more into superheroes than critical darlings, however, don’t despair. Both Marvel and DC have you covered too. Add Pixar’s latest Coco (opens November 22) and I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see November earning a bigger box office take than any summer month this year as a result.

The pair - who were always involved with the feature - are back on screenplay duties for the movie, that’s this time being directed by Mike Mitchell. The news was confirmed by producer Dan Lin, who’s currently on the promotional trail for the upcoming The Lego Ninjago Movie.
Talking to Collider, he said that “the team is all back together, so it’s Lord and Miller, myself and Chris McKay [McKay most recently directed The Lego Batman Movie]”.
“Mike Mitchell is the new voice who’s coming in to direct the movie. Chris and Phil are rewriting the script right now, but we’re in production.

Since DreamWorks Animation got snapped up by Universal, it seems several films have been cancelled. So what's actually happening?
If we imagine that the acquisition of Pixar by Disney was some kind of seismic shift for the Emeryville animation house, then Dreamworks Animation, by comparison, must be living in the red-hot cradle of a hyperactive volcano.
Animated films take so long, from concept to production to release, that recent Dreamworks titles are making their eventual escape from a corporate context which bears little relation to where they were conceived.
The Croods is a particularly good example. It was, originally, going to be a stop-motion film produced at Aardman with a screenplay by John Cleese. Without it ever being cancelled outright, this project continued to evolve, as Dreamworks twisted and turned like a kaleidoscope around it, in to the final product. The plot was different. The characters were different.

You know the deal with Mondo posters by now. They're normally super exclusive, limited run prints that are incredibly difficult to come by, but that's not the case for the company's two new Star Wars-themed pieces. Mondo and Acme Archives are making these available all weekend for anyone who wants them, so while you're compulsively checking news about Comic-Con, you can actually order some without fear of them selling out.
First up is Mike Mitchell's "Rey." You've likely seen Mitchell's long-running series of profile art featured elsewhere on the site in the past, and this one is a beautiful interpretation of Daisy Ridley's character from The Force Awakens.

Mondo is teaming with Acme Archives to bring fans brand new officially licensed artwork based on the classic Star Wars and Indiana Jones film franchises. Mondo has worked on Star Wars in the past (producing Olly Moss's now-iconic triptych), but this will be the first time they'll take a crack at work inspired by Indy.
The first piece of this partnership is the 12x16 giclee print you see above, entitled Red Five, that features Luke Skywalker suited up in his X-wing flight gear. That's the first of an upcoming series of Star Wars profiles from artist Mike Mitchell.
Normally, Mondo posters sell out within minutes of going on sale, so it really helps to be on top of things and paying attention to the company's Twitter feed if you want to jump on it. But thankfully, Red Five is going on sale tomorrow and will be available for anyone to purchase for 72 hours.

Mondo is kicking off the new year with two new posters that pay tribute to Christopher Nolan's best Batman film (and arguably the best live-action Batman movie ever made), The Dark Knight.
First up are two pieces from artist Laurent Durieux, who describes them as follows:
"It's been too long since I've come up with a new print for Mondo and this one has been finished and ready for many months. I have been both very anxious and excited about the day when it would eventually be revealed. The Dark Knight is such a great film, and most certainly is my favorite of Nolan's trilogy. I hope I did it justice. A lot of TLC went into it in the hope I would. Thank you Mondo for this great opportunity!"

People.com is reporting that actor Rod Taylor died Wednesday at the age of 84 of natural causes.
His daughter Felicia Taylor, a former CNN correspondent, confirmed the news Thursday.
“My dad loved his work. Being an actor was his passion – calling it an honorable art and something he couldn’t live without,” she said in a statement.
“He once said, ‘I am a poor student sitting at the feet of giants, yearning for their wisdom and begging for lessons that might one day make me a complete artist,” she continued, “ ‘so that if all goes well, I may one day sit beside them.”
Born on Jan 11, 1930 in Sydney, Australia, Rod Taylor is best remembered for his starring roles in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963) and George Pal’s The Time Machine (1960). He also provided the voice of Pongo in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians (1961). Taylor also starred in TV’s “The Twilight Zone...

Has it actually been ten years already since we have been engaged in the realm of films dating back to 2004? A decade is certainly a long period of time to build our appreciation for cinema up until this critical point in 2014. In looking back at 2004, one can recall fondly some of the more desirable releases to come out at that time. For instance, the superb Million Dollar Baby was the Academy Award-winning film for 2004. Even the comedies that were released that year gave movie audiences cause to rejoice with such ditties as the sleeper indie hit Napoleon Dynamite and well as mainstream laughers in Mean Girls and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy.
Unfortunately for every gem there is a dud and then some. And 2004 had its share to say the least. So how about getting nostalgic and recalling some of the notable misses that were heaped on misled moviegoers...

Video game movies have a bad reputation, but that's not stopping Sony from turning to an old classic for fresh inspiration. As we near the 23rd anniversary of the release of Sega's Sonic The Hedgehog, plans have been announced to turn this video game into a flashy movie. The Wrap reports Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marza Animation Planet have joined forces to adapt the Sonic The Hedgehog video game into a a hybrid CG-animated/live-action feature film. The script is being penned by Evan Susser and Van Robichaux, up-and-coming writers who created the monthly comedy talk show What's Going On? With Mike Mitchell. No director has yet been attached. Sonic The Hedgehog is still globally popular after two decades. Not only is the blue hedgehog with the lightning fast speed an icon of video games, he's also the face of a $1 billion franchise made up of more than 140 million games...

These days, with the proliferation of Marvel’s licensing partners, it would be quite possible to decorate your own home from floor to ceiling in Marvel merchandise. If you can put a Marvel character on it, then it exists. It makes sense in this climate for Mondo Gallery to expand its relationship with Marvel, going beyond its custom movie posters into limited-edition art inspired by the source comics themselves. For the task, Mondo solicited Mike Mitchell, the American Academy of Art alum probably best known for the 2010 “I’m with Coco” campaign. At the gallery opening, every character was ogled equally, with guests brushing up against Marvel cosplayers to discuss the finer points of the use of color on an oversized painting of a Sentinel. It...

Mondo has released a set of Marvel superhero portraits created by artist Mike Mitchell. These are part of a comics-themed show taking place at the Mondo Gallery in Austin, TX. The artist had this to say about his illustrations and what he wants to portray in them:
"My love for Marvel Comics was an integral part of growing up. Not just the comics, but the action figures, video games and cartoons. My intention with this show was to take those characters out of their action-oriented world and give them a moment of silence to catch their breath. There's a humanizing quality to that which I find extremely interesting. This has easily been the most ambitious project I've ever taken on, and it's due in part to my love for their universe; which is fictional by definition, but real in my mind and in the minds of others."
They turned out beautifully.

Fans of film and television posters and artwork have come to expect great things from Alamo Drafthouse's art division Mondo, and this year is no exception. Mondo and the Oh My Disney blog will pair up for a run of limited edition Disney posters that will be available exclusively at SXSW. It's a nice contrast to last year's run of limited edition "Game of Thrones" posters, a slightly gloomier fantasy world than most of the Mouse House's material. The event will take place from March 7-11 at the Mondo Gallery on 4115 Guadalupe St, starting with an opening reception on Friday, March 7 from 3-10pm. The show features new artwork from Martin Asnin, Billy Baumann, Anne Benjamin, Daniel Danger, Jason Edmiston, Kilian Eng, Graham Erwin, Francesco Francavilla, Hero Design Studio, Brandon Holt, Aaron Horkey, Rich Kelly, Landland, Methan Studios, Mike Mitchell, Dave Perillo, Dave Petersen, Phantom City Creative, Jc Richard, Jay Ryan,...

This is a special edition of Short Starts, where we look at the Sundance shorts program class of 1993. 1992 and 1994 are very notable years in the history of the Sundance Film Festival. Mostly for features. In between, the 1993 event should be recognized for its short film program. It was only the second year of this section — though shorts were an increasingly significant part of the fest since 1988 — and it remains, two decades later, probably the most important (if not best) batch of short films to ever come together in Park City. Among the filmmakers receiving their first real notice in this program were Paul Thomas Anderson, Wes Anderson, David Wain, Eugene Jarecki, Tamara Jenkins, Ted Demme, Stanley Tucci (as writer/producer), Gary Fleder, Alex Sichel, Mike Mitchell and animators Eric Darnell and Matt O’Callaghan. Their early works played alongside shorts by Michael Almereyda, Lourdes Portillo and two eventual Oscar nominees, Christian Taylor...
