It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a trio of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Despicable Me 4.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The second season of Netflix's Wednesday has added a new cast member that's sure to bring the show a lot of attention, with Lady Gaga set to join the Addams Family spin-off series in a mysterious role.
Details on Gaga's character have not been released, but Variety believes that her part is more likely to be a cameo than a full-on supporting role.
Gaga's involvement with the series was foreshadowed shortly after the first season, when a meme featuring Jenna Ortega's Wednesday Addams dancing to a sped-up version of 2011's Bloody Mary went viral.
Ortega would later state that she would love Gaga to be a part of the show while being interviewed at the 2023 Golden Globes.
"I'm sure Netflix would love that. I think Mrs. Thornhill and Wednesday had this weird mentor relationship or kind of understood each other in a certain way, so, if Lady Gaga were to be a part,...

Joker 2 star Lady Gaga has reportedly joined the already-impressive cast actors confirmed for Netflix show’s second season of Wednesday.
The second season of Wednesday is on the way, and several talented new faces have already been added to the show’s roster to ensure that it builds on the success of its predecessor. We’ve already learned that Thandiwe Newton and Billie Piper will be joining the action, but according to Entertainment Weekly, Lady Gaga is now set to join the Wednesday ensemble too.
No details are forthcoming about the actor’s role, so we’re hoping this isn’t a blown-up story over a fleeting cameo. Given that Gaga has put in an award-winning turn on TV’s American Horror Story, not to mention starring in A Star Is Born and this year’s Joker: Folie à Deux, we’re hoping the creatives behind the show have signed...

After the runaway success of Netflix and Tim Burton’s Addams Family stand-alone series Wednesday starring Jenna Ortega, the streamer renewed it for second season in January 2023. That decision came less than three months after the eight-episode Season 1 premiered, eventually becoming the most-watched original series ever on the streamer ever with more than 252 million views to date, far surpassing Stranger Things‘ Season 4, Dahmer and Season 1 of Bridgerton on the all-time list.
Season 1 ending up scoring 12 Emmy nominations, including for Ortega in Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming just the third Latina to ever be nominated in a leading actress category. The series won four Emmys, though Ortega lost out to Abbott Elementary‘s Quinta Brunson on Emmy night.
When will Season 2 be released?
Netflix has slated the second installment of the series for streaming in 2025.

It’s been more than three years since Tom Welling first revealed that he and Michael Rosenbaum were working on a potential animated follow-up to Smallville. Fans were excited by the idea, but unfortunately, the project seems to be stalled as it’s waiting on a very crucial approval from Warner Bros.
“The honest answer is we have not been able to get Warner Bros. to give us the thumbs-up. We need their permission,” Welling told TVLine. “We haven’t even gotten a response!” The actor admitted that the Smallville animated series is “more of a fan-driven idea” that likely wouldn’t be a “financial windfall” for the studio. “We all like each other, we all like working together, and if we could do it, it’d be fun,” he said. “But Warner Bros. — and I’m not hating on them — they just haven’t gotten back to us. Smallville alumni Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum would love to get the show’s animated sequel series off the ground… if only a Warner Bros. executive would call them back.

Thanks to breakout roles in the Scream revival, Netflix's Wednesday and this year's Beetlejuice sequel, Jenna Ortega is fast becoming one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood, so it probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that she's being courted by Marvel Studios.
According to scooper Mttsh, Ortega is now in talks for an undisclosed Marvel Cinematic Universe role.
It's always worth noting that Marvel meets with a lot of talent, but if Ortega has actually entered negotiations for an upcoming project, there's a good chance the trades will get hold of the story before too long.
Even if she is in talks, there's no guarantee that things will work out. Ortega has a busy schedule ahead, with a lead role in Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun adaptation, and an untitled Trey Edward Shults film that will co-star The Weeknd and Barry Keoghan.

The world may have first fallen in love with Jenna Ortega in the Netflix series, Wednesday. However, the actress has come a long way since then. With her starring in a Sabrina Carpenter song and even in the recent revival of Beetlejuice, the 22-year-old has cemented herself as one of Hollywood’s favorites. Although fans of Tim Burton expected the latest film to be horrific, there was one creepy scene that no one saw coming.

The scene might have set the stage for a potential third part of the franchise. However, it also left a lot of questions circling in the minds of fans. After all, the Ortega scene has even been dubbed one of the most disturbing moments in the whole film.

Although there have been several retellings of Superman’s story over the years, Smallville has a very special place in the hearts of the fans. The series ran for ten seasons and starred the beloved Tom Welling, gaining a following of its own and managing to become iconic despite the flashy lights of DC’s cinematic universe. Not only was the series critically acclaimed, but it also stood out in its own way in front of the rest of the Superman projects.

With this in mind, it is not surprising that fans wanted more from the cast after the show aired its final season in 2017. Thankfully, it would seem that Welling himself, along with Michael Rosenbaum, are actively trying to get a spinoff for the series made.

Transformers One has come in below expectations, allowing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to hold on to the top spot at the domestic box office for the third week in a row.
Analysts predicted $30 million to $40 million debut for Paramount's animated prequel, which only ended up taking in $25 million from 3,978 venues. The movie - which had a reported budget of $75 million - also made $14 million internationally, for a global total of $39 million.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice producer Tommy Harper has just helped Tim Burton return to the big screen with a bang after a five year absence, with the film grossing $264.3M worldwide in its first two weeks on release.
The seasoned producer – who is also a go-to for Tom Cruise, J.J. Abrams and Joseph Kosinski – is not resting on his laurels amid the congratulatory coverage.
After a whirlwind launch tour, which saw the film open Venice and then head to London for its UK premiere; followed by a quick trip to L.A. for Burton to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the pair are preparing to shoot the last two episodes of season 2 of Netflix hit show Wednesday.
“It’s been a very busy time,” says Harper. “We wanted to give all our attention to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, to get it out into world, and then go to Dublin to finish up Wednesday.

Season 2 of the hit Netflix Addams Family series Wednesday has been filming in Ireland since May, and Netflix has just unveiled a video that gives a glimpse behind the scenes. In the process, they have also confirmed that the new batch of episodes will premiere sometime in 2025. Among the cast and crew members seen in the video are, of course, star Jenna Ortega, as well as director Tim Burton – and during a chat with Collider, Al Gough (who created this series with Miles Millar) revealed that Burton is directing half of season 2, which is the same thing he did for the first season. That means Burton is at the helm of four of the season’s eight episodes.
Wednesday comes to us from Millar Gough Ink, Tim Burton Productions, Toluca Pictures, and MGM Television, and is described as a comedic, supernaturally-infused coming-of-age series that follows the teenage girl’s years...

Heavy spoilers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" to follow.
Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" has a rather peculiar relationship with death. It flips the script on the possession horror film; rather than having evil ghosts haunting the living, it follows a ghost couple being terrorized by an obnoxious family in their own home. Additionally, the film's portrayal of the afterlife is neither a hellish inferno nor a perfect utopia. Instead, it is horribly dull and ridden with bureaucracy. But it doesn't stop there; "Beetlejuice" also has some, shall we say, creative takes on dying, like how its young heroine Lydia (Winona Ryder) spends most of the movie saying she wants to die by suicide so she can spend more time with her ghost friends. Death is absurd, unpredictable, and even alluring in the world of "Beetlejuice."
It makes sense, then, that the sequel would double down on the deaths. "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" begins with...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Arthur Conti went from zero to sixty in record time. The English actor turned the equivalent of a high school musical into representation, which led to a two-line day on House of the Dragon and an acclaimed performance at London’s Park Theatre. Toward the end of his run on stage in Winner’s Curse, he put himself on tape for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Tim Burton and Michael Keaton’s 1988 genre mashup, Beetlejuice. Unexpectedly, Conti soon found himself in the middle of a Zoom callback with Burton and the town’s newly anointed superstar, Jenna Ortega.
Within two hours, Conti officially landed the role of Jeremy Frazier, who Ortega’s character, Astrid Deetz, would eventually refer to as her “date from hell.” Astrid — having been estranged from her mother, Lydia (Winona Ryder), since the divorce and death of her father Richard (Santiago Cabrera...

While Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is one of Warner Bros’ biggest theatrical success stories of the year, at over $264 million in worldwide grosses and counting, there was a period in the decade-plus the studio was mulling the sequel in which execs advocated for the film to go straight to streaming on Max.
However, “that was never going to work for Tim,” says Pamela Abdy, Co-Chair of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group, in a new interview with the New York Times. “You’re talking about a visionary artist whose films demand to be seen on a big screen.”
But while Abdy and Co-Chair Mike De Luca, who assumed the top film posts at Warner Bros in 2022, were highly enthusiastic about getting the Beetlejuice sequel made, they knew its budget would have to come down, for a theatrical release to make sense. While Burton and team had projected a $147M budget,...

Back in the spring of 2023, "Wednesday" star Jenna Ortega said on a podcast that she personally rewrote some parts of the Netflix show's script that she didn't think quite worked. So, what do the show's creators think about that?
Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, who created the series for the streamer, were speaking to The Hollywood Reporter about their work on the Burton-Ortega collaboration "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" when the outlet brought up Ortega's comments. To be honest, both Gough and Millar handled it very professionally.
"That's hard," Gough admitted, adding that he and Millar have dealt with somewhat similar situations before. "We've done a few of these shows, like 'Smallville,' which was a big hit out of the gate. Suddenly, you have these young stars in the spotlight. They're going to misstep. They're going to say things. I think you just have to give them grace and know that it happens.

The 2022 TV series "Wednesday," created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, is a modern update of the Addams Family, characters featured in a series of ghoulish comic strips that first appeared in the pages of the New Yorker in 1933. Over the decades, the Addams Family characters were given their own sitcom, a few animated shows, and multiple theatrical features and TV movies, not to mention comic books, video games, and pinball machines.
The myth of the Addams Family has remained consistent throughout: The Addams are a loving, healthy family whose values only happen to be a complete dark mirror of ordinary people's. The Addams Family love death, bleakness, and misery. They regularly commit murder, and seem to be immortal. And yet, they love everything they do. The family patriarch Gomez is enthused and sexually devoted to his wife Morticia. The young daughter Wednesday is a classic Goth kid, and happy to harm her brother Pugsley.

Clocking in at just under two minutes, the involuntary calypso dance sequence in the original Beetlejuice, during which Catherine O’Hara’s Delia Deetz leads her dinner guests in a lip sync of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-o,” is arguably the most famous scene from the 1988 film. An homage in the sequel was always a given.
But, for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton wanted to go even harder. The film’s climax includes another dance number — this one set to all seven minutes and 21 seconds of Richard Harris’ bonkers and much covered “MacArthur Park.” (Donna Summer’s disco-fied version spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1978.) It isn’t just another needle drop. It practically drives the narrative of the entire third act.

Tim Burton's 1988 film "Beetlejuice" followed the post-death adventures of Adam and Barbara Maitland (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) after they died in a driving accident. By the movie's lore, the afterlife is a soul-deadening bureaucracy and ghosts have to wait in years-long, Dmv-like lines just to talk to their personal social workers. The Maitlands are unexpectedly assigned a haunting job that, according to some oblique contract, will require them to stay inside their country home for the next 125 years. This only becomes an issue when the house is sold and a family of caustic, stressed-out yuppies move in.
Luckily, the Maitlands bond with the yuppies' teenage daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder), as she is a gloomy Goth able to see ghosts. By the end of the film, the Maitlands and the yuppies, the Deetzes, learn to live in the same house.

The Juice has well and truly been set loose at the box office, as Tim Burton's long-awaited Beetlejuice sequel claims the No. 1 spot from Deadpool and Wolverine with a record-breaking domestic debut.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice scared up an estimated $110 million in North America ($145M worldwide) to give it the 3rd biggest opening of 2024; 2nd biggest opening ever for Tim Burton; 2nd best September opening, and 2nd biggest opening ever for a horror film, surpassing Warner Bros.' It: Chapter 2.
This also means that the sequel has already surpassed the original movie's entire global gross ($74 million) after a single weekend in theaters.
Getting back to Marvel Studios' massively successful first foray into R-rated territory, and it looks like the movie is set to premiere on Digital platforms early next month (we're still waiting on an official announcement).

"Smallville" began as a Superman origin story, showing Clark Kent (Tom Welling) growing up as a Kansas farm boy in the early aughts. His best friend? Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum), of course! About halfway through, it became a straight-up Superman show that just didn't have the title or costume. Once you introduce the Justice League, you're out of the "prequel" period.
As this change happened, "Smallville" got very liberal about bringing in DC Comics characters — Clark even fought friggin' Darkseid in the 10th and final season! That makes two big absences stand out all the more. Batman and Wonder Woman, Superman's closest comrades and fellow parts of the DC Trinity, never show up in "Smallville."
At the 2024 TerrifiCon convention, Welling revealed it wasn't only fans who wanted Batman to pop in on "Smallville." Welling, though, said his ideal crossover would've been more low-key and free of any black, pointy-eared costumes:...

Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is off to a rip-roaring start at the domestic box office as if no time had passed between now and when the first film graced the big screen 36 years ago.
From Warner Bros., the first event pic of the fall season opened to a monstrous $111 million, coming in on the high end of expectations and even ahead of Sunday’s estimated $110 million. Whether it can successfully revive the franchise will depend on its staying power.
There’s also the question of overseas, where the original film didn’t play in theaters so doesn’t have the same nostalgic factor (it has developed some markets including the U.K and Australia). Tim Burton’s highly anticipated sequel to the 1988 comedy classic “Beetlejuice” had huge opening weekend numbers at the domestic box office. The new film, titled “Beetlejuice Returns,” brought in $41.5 million on its first Friday, including $13 million from previews on Thursday night. Studio projections show the movie could make over $102 million during its opening weekend. If achieved, this would make it the second highest grossing film for the month of September, second only to the 2017 thriller “It.”
“Beetlejuice Returns” sees Michael Keaton reprise his memorable role as the ghostly trickster Beetlejuice, along with returning cast members Winona Ryder and Catherine O’Hara. The sequel introduces new characters played by Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Willem Dafoe. The story follows Lydia Deetz and her family as they return home after a loss, only to discover Lydia’s daughter Astrid has inadvertently opened a portal to the afterlife.
Early audience reactions have been very positive.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is now in theaters, and we're breaking down the long-awaited sequel's batsh*t crazy final act to see if the door to the Afterlife might be left open for a third movie.
Major spoilers follow.
When her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) is tricked into trading her soul to restore the ghost of murderous neighbour/love-interest Jeremy (Arthur Conti) to life, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) reluctantly summons Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) for help. The Ghost with the Most agrees to bring Lydia to the Afterlife to rescue Astrid... if she'll sign a contract promising to be his bride.
Lydia manages to bring Astrid home, but has already agreed to marry Rory (Justin Theroux), who Betelgeuse exposes as a gold-digging cad. Still, the prospect of tying the knot with a lecherous demon isn't exactly appealing to Lydia, and Astrid manages to find a loophole which allows her mother out of the bargain.
Major spoilers follow.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is finally here.
The sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 classic, once again directed by Burton, brings back a number of your favorite characters from the original, including Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), her stepmother Delia Deetz (Catherine O’Hara) and, of course, the ghost with the most himself Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton). Of course, there are a few exceptions. Notably, Jeffrey Jones doesn’t return, with his character Charles Deetz killed off during a stop-motion animation sequence. (This has as much to do with narrative drive as it does with Jones’ off-camera status as a real-life sex offender.)
But perhaps the most jarring exclusion in “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin’s Barbara and Adam Maitland. Not only were they the main characters in the first film, but the sequel makes it a point to return to the Maitland’s house in Winter River, Connecticut, including to the model...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the loooong-awaited sequel to Tim Burton’s beloved 1988 classic, is a bold attempt to recapture the magic of its predecessor. With original stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara reprising their roles, Burton reunites with his eccentric creation, hoping to evoke the whimsical macabre style that defined his early career. Yet, despite a healthy dose of nostalgia, quirky visual effects, and Danny Elfman’s unmistakable score, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice falls short of its potential, delivering an uneven, overstuffed Halloween romp that’s more style than substance.
The film picks up 36 years after the original, with Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) now a famous TV ghost-hunter and mother to rebellious teenager Astrid (Jenna Ortega). Lydia, still haunted by her past encounter with Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton), finds herself drawn back into the Neitherworld when Astrid unwittingly becomes trapped in the afterlife. Astrid, duped by a local boy named Jeremy (Arthur Conti...

While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is set to become a major success, its writers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are setting up their next project. THR reports that the writers of the Beetlejuice sequel are set to produce a movie adaptation of Ice Cream Man, the horror anthology comic written and created by W. Maxwell Prince.
Screen Gems recently acquired the rights to Ice Cream Man and is in early development on the movie. Gough and Millar will produce through their Millar Gough Ink banner, and Aaron Schmidt will also produce for the company. The search is currently on for a writer. The comic tells a series of loosely connected horror stories which typically share the common link of Rick, an ice cream man whose motives are mysterious. Sometimes friend, sometimes foe, Rick uses his inexplicable powers to string together tales of woe and wonder. The series is illustrated by Martin Morazzo with colours by Chris O’Halloran.

Image Comics’ popular comic book series Ice Cream Man was at one point being turned into a television series for the now defunct Quibi, but the property has found new life this week.
THR reports this afternoon that Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) are producing a film adaptation of the Ice Cream Man comics for Sony’s Screen Gems.
“Ice Cream Man serves up a range of horror flavors and genres, all threaded by the weaver of these tales, the titular character, who could be friend or foe, an angel or a devil.”
The Hollywood Reporter notes in today’s exclusive report, “The project is in early development and a search for a writer is currently underway.” Stay tuned for more as we learn it.

The Juice is on the loose.
Tim Burton’s long-awaited sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice grossed a promising $13 million in Thursday and Wednesday previews at the North American box office.
The Warner Bros. event pic is on course to deliver one of the biggest September openings of all time with anywhere from $90 million to $110 million in its domestic debut, based on tracking data and advanced ticket sales. Tracking services show the film opening to $100 million-plus, but Warners is erring on the side of caution.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice delivered the second-biggest September preview number of all behind fellow Waners’ R-rated blockbuster It, which took in $13.5 million on its way to a $123 million opening in early September 2017, not adjusted for inflation. It, based on a Stephen King novel, remains the record holder for biggest September opening. (Beettlejuice Beetlejuice can claim the biggest September preview number for a PG-13 title).

Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is now in theaters, and, as fans hoped it would, the movie does explain what happened to the original film's protagonists.
Though Michael Keaton's titular Ghost with the Most was obviously the main attraction in Tim Burton's horror comedy classic, the main characters were actually Adam and Barbara Maitland (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis).
The recently married couple are killed in a car accident in the first few minutes of the movie, and their displaced spirits wind up summoning Betelgeuse in an effort to drive the new owners of their house (Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz and her family) away. Things don't exactly go according to plan, however.
Ultimately, Betelgeuse is banished, and the Deetzs and Maitlands agree to share the house.
Keaton, Ryder and Catherine O'Hara (who plays Lydia's mother) reprise their roles for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but Baldwin and Davis don't appear.

The path to finally getting a “Beetlejuice” sequel off the ground started on the set of the Netflix series “Wednesday.”
“Wednesday” creators and showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar would meet with Tim Burton, the show’s executive producer and the director of the first half of the season, every morning during production. They would go over the scenes that were supposed to be shot that day, just to talk them through. But then they got a text one day from Burton. He wanted to meet them after the shooting day had wrapped.
“We thought something was wrong,” Gough admitted in an interview with TheWrap.
But something wasn’t wrong. Instead, Burton wanted to talk to them about something – a sequel to his 1988 hit “Beetlejuice.”
“He basically said, ‘Beetlejuice is the movie that everybody asks for a sequel to,’” Gough said. Burton, at the time, had been talking to original...
