- He and Elizabeth Montgomery fell in love during the eighth year of production of her TV series, Bewitched (1964), during which he directed many of the episodes. When they moved in together it broke up her marriage to William Asher and his to Kristina Hansen. The relationship lasted 2-1/2 years.
- His daughter, Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, was the first woman to be ranked #1 in the world in equestrian show jumping. She won an Olympic bronze medal in Rio in 2016.
- In October 1994 he retired from directing. Moved to Maui, HI, in 2003.
