Great indie numbers this weekend as Anora turned out highest per-screen-average of 2024 at $90k on six screens for a $540k gross. We Live In Time, the best platform expansion of the year, grossed $4.2 million on 956 screens in week 2 for a $4.5 million cume. Newcomers Union and The Line fared well on one screen each, as did Goodrich on about 1,000.
“We’re incredibly excited about this weekend’s record-breaking results and the fantastic critical and audience response to Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film Anora. Baker is a singular director who truly understands the power of the theatrical experience and how important it is for films to be seen in the theater,” Neon said. “With Mikey Madison in her unparalleled performance as Anora, and the film’s strong awards potential, there’s no doubt it will continue to captivate a broad audience as we move into the fall.”

Plot: After his younger second wife leaves him and enters a 90-day rehab program, Los Angeles art dealer Andy Goodrich seeks out his adult pregnant daughter Grace for help with raising his nine-year-old twins.
Review: I love Michael Keaton movies. In the 1980s and 1990s, Keaton was the ubiquitous leading man in everything from comedies and dramas to his game-changing turn in Tim Burton’s Batman. In the early 2000s, Keaton’s roles dried up a bit, aside from voice roles in the Cars and Toy Story franchises. After his awards-worthy role in 2014’s Birdman, Keaton had a resurgence with acclaimed films like The Founder, Spotlight, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to a very different comic book character in Spider-Man: Homecoming. After reprising his Batman role in last year’s The Flash and making his directorial debut with Knox Goes Away, he resurrected his iconic Beetlejuice this year...

Unexpected phone rings received in the middle of the night aren’t usually the bearer of good news. In “Home Again” writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s middling LA-based dramedy “Goodrich,” the title character (played by Michael Keaton) learns it the hard way. A call from his wife wakes Andy Goodrich up in the wee hours, informing this shocked, aloof husband (who hasn’t even noticed that she wasn’t home) that she’s checked into a Malibu rehab for 90 days to address her addiction problem, leaving Andy to care for their 9-year-old twins. Also, she tells him she’ll be leaving him as soon as she’s out.

These days, every time I see a relatable, character-driven comedy about actual human beings I think, “Wow they sure don’t make ’em like this anymore.” It is like a shock to the system that someone managed to get one made and released. It makes me sad since this was once a popular genre with with major studios regularly filled theaters. Now at best it is left to streamers, or an occasional example that somehow sneaks onto a studio release schedule, or, in the case of writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s exceptionally smart and endearing Goodrich, it is being delivered to theaters by an independent (in this case Ketchup Entertainment) and sporting an endless list of “executive producers” (I counted 24 with that title) who put up enough money to get a deserving film on the screen against all odds.

Andy Goodrich (Michael Keaton) is edging toward his seventh decade of life when his wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti), announces that she’s checked into a Malibu rehab facility for 90 days. She also lets him know she wants a divorce. Andy, whose Los Angeles gallery of many years is on the verge of shuttering, is now facing the reality of needing to step up as a parent for his nine-year-old twins (Vivien Lyra Blair and Jacob Kopera).
These are the rather mundane inciting incidents of Goodrich, and writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer thankfully doesn’t juice them up with too much schematic plotting. Her second feature is an easygoing character study that’s stripped of the sitcom-y schtick of her first, 2017’s Home Again. At its best, Goodrich makes the canny choice to neither condemn its protagonist as a toxic villain nor redeem him as a good-hearted saint. He’s just Goodrich.

The absolute epitome of what another critic I know refers to as “gas leak cinema,” Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s sweetly deranged “Home Again” — starring Reese Witherspoon as a single mom who invites three cute and aspiring young filmmakers to stay in the guest house of her palatial Brentwood home — is the kind of rom-com that feels like it was made by aliens whose only exposure to our species was an intercepted satellite feed of the Hallmark Channel. Everyone is beautiful, no one’s decisions make sense, and the only remotely pressing conflict is whether Reese’s new houseguests will be able to attend her daughter’s school play.
In other words, “Home Again” is exactly what I hoped to see from the offspring of Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer; leave normal movies to normal people, I want to know what the world looks like through the eyes of a bright-eyed nepo...

When Andy Goodrich’s wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti), tells him that she’s checked herself into rehab and plans to leave him, few people are surprised. Everyone knew the mother of his two elementary school-aged children reached for pills at night to lull her to sleep and indulged in extra glasses of wine.
That the news nevertheless shocks Andy, played with an endearing clumsiness by Michael Keaton, speaks more to his own distracted state. The gallerist has never been a present partner or parent, as evidenced by his relationship to his eldest daughter (Mila Kunis) with his first wife (Andie MacDowell). Now that his current union is on the brink of ruin, Andy feels pressure to change.
Goodrich, Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s second feature, observes Andy as he tries to be a better father. The narrative coasts on the familiar beats of this premise, offering only a handful of novel moments along the way.

When Hallie Meyers-Shyer thinks about directors, she thinks about women — women like herself, or like her own mother, Nancy Meyers. When asked about the continued conversation around nepotism in Hollywood — or, more pointedly, the rise of second- and third-generation filmmakers in the current landscape — she thinks about her mother, too.
“I have a different experience than other people, because I think a lot of the people [in this conversation], their fathers are filmmakers,” Meyers-Shyer said during a recent interview with IndieWire. “For me, the benefit was I saw directing my whole life as a woman’s job, and that’s really powerful and unique. I feel very grateful for it.”
That’s only half the story, as Meyers-Shyer is in the somewhat unique position of being not only the child of a female filmmaker and a male filmmaker (her father is Charles Shyer), but also a second- and third-generation director. She’s certainly got perspective,...

One hit horror sequel deserves another, and Art the Clown won’t be the only one smiling this weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Despite the huge success of Damien Leone‘s “Terrifier 3,” Art the Clown will have to deal with the fact there is likely to be an even bigger horror sequel this weekend as Paramount Pictures releases “Smile 2.” It’s the follow-up to the 2022 hit horror movie from filmmaker Parker Finn, which opened with $22.6 million on its way to $105.9 million domestic and $217 million worldwide. It should go without saying that October is the perfect month for a horror release, but oddly, the original “Smile” opened on September 30, then had sustained legs with smaller week-to-week drops. Other horror franchises that have dominated the month of October include the “Saw” and “Paranormal Activity” movies, both which saw huge bumps in business with their second chapters.

Michael Keaton wasn’t exactly Hollywood’s golden boy when he landed his Oscar-winning role, and doors weren’t exactly flying open for him. But instead of panicking and going down the desperate path, Keaton doubled down on his iron will. With no offers rolling in, he could’ve jumped at the first subpar script thrown his way. But no, Keaton bided his time, keeping his cool in the chaotic world of showbiz.

After getting to see Michael Keaton reprise his role as Beetlejuice later this year, the Oscar nominee will be shifting to something much harder than trying to come back from the afterlife: parenthood.

The first trailer for the upcoming film “Goodrich” gives viewers a glimpse at the story of a father reconnecting with his adult daughter. Starring Michael Keaton and Mila Kunis, “Goodrich” centers on Andy Goodrich, played by Keaton, whose life is upended when his wife enters rehab, leaving him to care for their young twins alone. Overwhelmed, Andy turns to his daughter Grace, played by Kunis, for help despite their strained past relationship.
The trailer highlights the age difference between Andy and Grace. “I am 27 years older than you, which is basically unheard of for siblings… except maybe in LA,” Kunis’s character Grace jokes to Andy’s twin children. This line sets the tone for a story that blends humor with emotional depth in exploring family dynamics. As a single father struggling with work and parenting, Andy must face his failures as Grace’s father in the past. Meanwhile, Grace...

It seems there's a new portmanteau of an actor's name and the word "renaissance" cropping up all the time. In the early 2010s, we had the "McConaissance" and now Oscar winner Brendan Fraser is enjoying his own "Brenaissance." Michael Keaton, however, escaped the dreaded portmanteau when he re-ascended to superstar status with 2014's "Birdman." And he's since maintained that status with memorable turns in everything from the Oscar-winning "Spotlight" to Hulu's excellent chronicle of the opioid epidemic "Dopesick" — even debuting in the MCU as Vulture in "Spider-Man: Homecoming."
Soon, Keaton will be returning as Batman in "The Flash," some 30 years after walking away from the role. He's also gearing up for his directorial debut with "Knox Goes Away", which means that the 71-year-old is still a very busy man.

The Nancy Meyers movie that recently fell apart at Netflix over budget issues may be revived at Warner Bros.
After being set up at Netflix for over a year, Meyers’ long-awaited return to the director’s chair began to fall apart last week over disagreements about the budget. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warners, attracted to the idea of a ready-made hot project with an A-list cast and possible summer start date, may be stepping in to pick it up. Exploratory talks are underway, according to several sources.
Scarlett Johansson was attached to play the lead role in Meyers’ feature, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project. Meyers will write, direct and produce the comedy, which is currently known as Paris Paramount, although it is not clear if that’s the actual title, a working title or a code name.

Nancy Meyers’ return to the director’s chair is getting underway.
After not directing a movie since 2015’s The Intern, the filmmaker known for her upscale romantic comedies is back with a project that is attracting A-list talent. Scarlett Johansson is circling the lead role in Meyers’ upcoming feature for Netflix, multiple sources tell The Hollywood Reporter, with Penélope Cruz, Owen Wilson and Michael Fassbender also eying the project.

Michael Keaton is not only returning to his iconic role as Batman in the upcoming The Flash, now Deadline is reporting that Keaton is going back to his comedic roots in a similar role that got Batman purists to literally protest his initial casting in the first place. Keaton’s reputation for being a goofball in silly comedies such as Mr. Mom initially led fans to think his being placed in the Batman role meant that the studio was not taking the property seriously. How wrong they were!

Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.
Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”
“Nancy Meyers is the writer many of us aspire to be – her scripts walk the line of blending challenging ideas with comedic situations, dramatic themes with hard jokes,” said WGA West president David A. Goodman. “Her work consistently proves that movies about the foibles and frailties of humans will be commercially successful in the hands of a master of her craft. The Wgaw Board of Directors is thrilled to give her this award.

Mindy Kaling and Nancy Meyers — two titans of romantic comedies and layered, human storytelling overall — gathered Saturday in a wide-ranging conversation about their experiences as filmmakers in a changing market.
At Produced By, the annual conference of the Producers Guild of America, the pair had an hour to share a wealth of information about their respective tastes, challenges, budgets, marketing strategies and more.
The chat was timely, thanks to Kaling’s Amazon Studios comedy “Late Night” hitting this weekend, but served as a fantastic excuse for an audience on Burbank’s Warner Bros. lot to overhear two influential creatives get to know each other.
Here’s a bit of what we learned:
Mindy appreciates modern comedy, but wants something more aspirational.

Michael Keaton is now attached to star in a new film called Goodrich, with Hallie Meyers-Shyer (Home Again) directing from the script she wrote and Amy Pascal producing.
Pascal has previously worked with Keaton on Spider-Man: Homecoming, as well as hits like Venom, The Post, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The story of Goodrich is about “a man named Andy Goodrich in the aftermath of his second wife leaving him. He is faced with taking care of their 9-year-old twins and has to seek help from his adult daughter.”
This sounds like an endearing story, and Keaton is an endearing guy, so I think it will be a great fit. I have loved Michael Keaton since I was a kid watching Mr. Mom, Batman, Beetlejuice, and many others. I totally love him in a fatherly role.
Does this sound like a film you’ll enjoy?...

Exclusive: The hot project du jour is Goodrich, a drama written and to be directed by Hallie Meyers-Shyer. The package just went out but has multiple bids on the table after Michael Keaton became attached to star.
Here’s the logline: when Andy Goodrich’s second wife suddenly leaves him, he is faced with taking sole care of their nine-year-old twins and relies a little too heavily on the help of his adult daughter who struggles to help Andy become the father she never had.
Amy Pascal is producing and it is a potential tour de force for Keaton the way that About Schmidt was for Jack Nicholson. The plan is to start production in October.
Keaton just starred in Dumbo. He’s repped by ICM Partners.
Meyers-Shyer, who last directed the Reese Witherspoon-starrer Home Again, is repped by CAA. Pascal is also producing Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

So Olde-Coggin is doing just that by funding, through her new Erika Film Foundation, an annual grant for a student ...

With the comic book-based movie ascendant, other genres have worn out their welcome with audiences, largely given to them being played out mines of creativity. One such casualty of staleness was the romcom; I would argue we haven’t had a good one of those in at least a decade. It makes sense, therefore, that the next generation of filmmaker tries the genre. You can’t have a better pedigree for this than Writer/Director Hallie Meyers-Shyer, who with parents Nancy Meyers (The Holiday) and Charles Shyer, were the last interesting purveyors in this field.

He was a legendary director who married his last major star, Lillian (Candice Bergen...

Home Again is out on DVD and Blu-Ray. Here's Spencer Coile...
Home Again is not a particularly good movie. The film debut of Nancy Meyers' daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, follows Reese Witherspoon as she deals with motherhood, a recent separation... and the three young filmmakers she agrees to let stay with her for an extended period of time. Standard fare, right? And it is, despite that third curve. The writing is a little too on-the-nose, characters do not feel fully fleshed out, and the editing implies serious cuts were made. Still, though, it is hard not to be won over due heavily to Witherspoon herself... ...
