In the early 2000s, Keaton’s roles dried up a bit, aside from voice roles in the Cars and Toy Story franchises. After his awards-worthy role in 2014’s Birdman, Keaton had a resurgence with acclaimed films like The Founder, Spotlight, and The Trial of the Chicago 7 to a very different comic book character in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Unexpected phone rings received in the middle of the night aren’t usually the bearer of good news. In “Home Again” writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s middling LA-based dramedy “Goodrich,” the title character (played by Michael Keaton) learns it the hard way. A call from his wife wakes Andy Goodrich up in the wee hours, informing this shocked, aloof husband (who hasn’t even noticed that she wasn’t home) that she’s checked into a Malibu rehab for 90 days to address her addiction problem, leaving Andy to care for their 9-year-old twins. Also, she tells him she’ll be leaving him as soon as she’s out.

Affecting with his mournful gaze, expressively arched eyebrows and the signature mystique of his husky voice, an understated Keaton carries this insightful and generously composed opening, proving that the septuagenarian actor is as game for material grounded in earthly concerns as he is...

These days, every time I see a relatable, character-driven comedy about actual human beings I think, “Wow they sure don’t make ’em like this anymore.” It is like a shock to the system that someone managed to get one made and released. It makes me sad since this was once a popular genre with with major studios regularly filled theaters. Now at best it is left to streamers, or an occasional example that somehow sneaks onto a studio release schedule, or, in the case of writer-director Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s exceptionally smart and endearing Goodrich, it is being delivered to theaters by an independent (in this case Ketchup Entertainment) and sporting an endless list of “executive producers” (I counted 24 with that title) who put up enough money to get a deserving film on the screen against all odds.

Her second feature is an easygoing character study that’s stripped of the sitcom-y schtick of her first, 2017’s Home Again. At its best, Goodrich makes the canny choice to neither condemn its protagonist as a toxic villain nor redeem him as a good-hearted saint. He’s just Goodrich.

The absolute epitome of what another critic I know refers to as “gas leak cinema,” Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s sweetly deranged “Home Again” — starring Reese Witherspoon as a single mom who invites three cute and aspiring young filmmakers to stay in the guest house of her palatial Brentwood home — is the kind of rom-com that feels like it was made by aliens whose only exposure to our species was an intercepted satellite feed of the Hallmark Channel. Everyone is beautiful, no one’s decisions make sense, and the only remotely pressing conflict is whether Reese’s new houseguests will be able to attend her daughter’s school play.

When Andy Goodrich’s wife, Naomi (Laura Benanti), tells him that she’s checked herself into rehab and plans to leave him, few people are surprised. Everyone knew the mother of his two elementary school-aged children reached for pills at night to lull her to sleep and indulged in extra glasses of wine.

That the news nevertheless shocks Andy, played with an endearing clumsiness by Michael Keaton, speaks more to his own distracted state. The gallerist has never been a present partner or parent, as evidenced by his relationship to his eldest daughter (Mila Kunis) with his first wife (Andie MacDowell). Now that his current union is on the brink of ruin, Andy feels pressure to change.

Goodrich, Hallie Meyers-Shyer’s second feature, observes Andy as he tries to be a better father. The narrative coasts on the familiar beats of this premise, offering only a handful of novel moments along the way.

Nancy Meyers's 2006 Christmas movie, "The Holiday," has worked its way into the hearts and minds of movie fans everywhere in the 16 years since its release. The film stars Kate Winslet as Iris, a British newspaper columnist, and Cameron Diaz as Amanda, an American woman who makes movie trailers. Both of them are unlucky in love and desperate for an escape, so they swap houses to spend Christmas in sunny Los Angeles and snowy England, respectively. Iris falls for Amanda's coworker, played by Jack Black, and Amanda falls for Iris's brother, a single dad with a heart of gold, played by Jude Law. Everyone is happily coupled up on New Year's Eve at the end of the film.

Nancy Meyers, the highest-grossing female writer-director-producer in Hollywood’s box office history, will be the recipient of the WGA West’s 2020 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement.

Diane Keaton, who starred in Meyers’ 2003 film Something’s Gotta Give, will present the award at the 72nd annual Writers Guild Awards ceremony on February 1 in Los Angeles. The award is presented to guild members who have “advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter.”

Sales will commence at Cannes this week on the hot project, with CAA Media Finance and ICM Partners co-representing the U.S. rights to the film. CAA Media Finance and ICM Partners also arranged for the film’s financing.

As we revealed last month, pic was written by and will be directed by Meyers-Shyer and centers on a man named Andy Goodrich (Keaton) who seeks the help of his adult daughter to raise his young twins after his second wife leaves him.

Former Sony head Amy Pascal (Ghostbusters) is producing for Pascal Pictures alongside Keaton and Meyers-Shyer. Principal photography is planned to commence this fall.

Here’s the logline: when Andy Goodrich’s second wife suddenly leaves him, he is faced with taking sole care of their nine-year-old twins and relies a little too heavily on the help of his adult daughter who struggles to help Andy become the father she never had.

Amy Pascal is producing and it is a potential tour de force for Keaton the way that About Schmidt was for Jack Nicholson. The plan is to start production in October.

Keaton just starred in Dumbo. He’s repped by ICM Partners.

Meyers-Shyer, who last directed the Reese Witherspoon-starrer Home Again, is repped by CAA. Pascal is also producing Greta Gerwig’s Little Women and Spider-Man: Far From Home.

“Omg! Such an exciting day! @halliemeyersshyer and @bigbluewhale are engaged! Mother of the Bride Part 2. Here we go!” Nancy captioned the photo of Hallie and her engagement ring.

Hallie, whose dad is Father of the Bride director Charles Shyer, and tech entrepreneur Ophir Tanz have been dating for nearly six years.

With the comic book-based movie ascendant, other genres have worn out their welcome with audiences, largely given to them being played out mines of creativity. One such casualty of staleness was the romcom; I would argue we haven’t had a good one of those in at least a decade. It makes sense, therefore, that the next generation of filmmaker tries the genre. You can’t have a better pedigree for this than Writer/Director Hallie Meyers-Shyer, who with parents Nancy Meyers (The Holiday) and Charles Shyer, were the last interesting purveyors in this field.

The trailers for Universal’s Home Again certainly looked promising with a look at 40-year old single mom Alice Kinney (Reese Witherspoon) raising her two daughters Isabel (Lola Flanery) and Rose (Eden Grace Redfield) in the house her now deceased father owned. Home Again is not a particularly good movie. The film debut of Nancy Meyers' daughter, Hallie Meyers-Shyer, follows Reese Witherspoon as she deals with motherhood, a recent separation... and the three young filmmakers she agrees to let stay with her for an extended period of time. Standard fare, right? And it is, despite that third curve. The writing is a little too on-the-nose, characters do not feel fully fleshed out, and the editing implies serious cuts were made. Still, though, it is hard not to be won over due heavily to Witherspoon herself... ...
