Surreal delirium in cinema! Gary Cooper and Ann Harding are a tragic romantic pair, but even when separated by space, time and the law they manage to live a full life together as virtual dream lovers. The odd art film out in Henry Hathaway’s career, this unabashed spiritualist fantasy was adopted by French surrealists as emblematic of their values. It’s beautifully filmed by cameraman Charles Lang, avoiding overdone expressionist effects… reality is a dream, folks, and this star-crossed pair makes dreams real by a simple force of will. Spiritual Nirvana or pretension? It’s crazy, but it connects with real life as we experience it — with our romantic memories and regrets.

Before Dirty John, the Netflix dramatisation, came Dirty John the wildly popular LA Times podcast featuring the real voices of Debra Newell and her family and hosted by award winning journalist Christopher Goffrey. The podcast has been downloaded over 50 million times and while the Netflix version starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana had a glossy, trashy appeal it couldn’t live up to the podcast both for being not actually real, and also too tethered to the real, never quite being able to reach the full on bonkersness of fiction series like You.
Dirty John was the nickname of John Meehan, the confidence trickster at the centre of the original case and while at first it was hard to imagine how a season two would be possible, Meehan’s story having been concluded, the show has expanded its remit so it can serialise and dramatise other true crime cases with...

It would be safe to say that Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness has become one of our latest obsessions. Joe Exotic is the subject of a very good in depth podcast from Wondery called Joe Exotic: Tiger King (it was formerly called Over My Dead Body: Joe Exotic). That podcast is a perfect companion to the Netflix documentary series and is now the inspiration for a scripted drama starring Kate McKinnon as Exotic’s nemesis, Carole Baskin.
This is not the first podcast to inspire a TV show, documentary, or dramatisation, and it certainly won’t be the last. Major studios and production companies use podcasts more and more as sources of original IP and a testing ground to see if there’s an appetite or an audience for the subject matter. True crime has been embraced by the television academy in recent years, especially in the Best Limited Series category. Both installments of FX’s “American Crime Story,” “The People vs. O.J. Simpson” (2016) and “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” (2018), went home with Emmy statuettes. And while the show isn’t in the running this time around — its third season has not begun production — the limited series race is not one bereft of true crime contenders. One hopeful is Bravo’s “Dirty John,” which premiered on Nov. 25 and debuted internationally on Netflix on Feb. 14.
Based on “Los Angeles Times” reporter Christopher Goffard’s podcast of the same name, the show is about Debra Newell (Connie Britton), a successful interior designer and single mother of two daughters, Terra (Julia Garner) and Veronica (Juno Temple), who seems to have it all but internally still longs for love. Television’s fascination with crime stories dates back decades, but in order to capture an audience’s attention today, when it is pulled in multiple directions by 500 scripted series alone, a deeper dive inside the mind of those who do wrong has proven to be a recipe for successful storytelling. More specifically, there has been an uptick in digging into the psychology of female culpability and full-on criminology through limited series such as “Escape at Dannemora,” “Sharp Objects” and “The Act.”
“You want to create characters that are just mesmerizing — that are so complicated and alive and credible that you find yourself identifying with them and then are thrilled to go through those emotions without having to do that in your own life,” says Michael Tolkin, executive producer of “Escape at Dannemora.”

Welcome to “Remote Controlled,” a podcast from Variety featuring the best and brightest in television, both in front of and behind the camera.
In this week’s episode, “Dirty John” showrunner Alexandra Cunningham sits down with Variety‘s senior features editor of TV, Danielle Turchiano, to talk about working with Connie Britton to develop a scripted version of Debra Newell and the importance of offering not only Newell’s perspective in the storytelling but that of the others in her life, including John Meehan (Eric Bana).
One of the things Cunningham notes she specifically wanted to do when setting out to write a scripted series inspired by Christopher Goffard’s podcast of the same name was play with perspective.
“That was a thing that I could do, that Chris couldn’t do, was hear from John, as opposed to about John,” she explains.

Eleven years since they first collaborated on Romulus, My Father, Eric Bana and Robert Connolly are teaming up again for The Dry, the feature film adaptation of Jane Harper’s bestselling novel.
Bana will play Aaron Falk, a federal cop who returns to his drought-ravaged hometown after an absence of 20 years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend Luke, whom the local police believe killed his wife and child before taking his own life.
Falk reluctantly agrees to investigate the crime to determine whether it was more than a murder-suicide, which opens an old wound — the death of teenager Ellie Deacon, who was a friend of Falk and Luke.
He begins to suspect these two crimes are connected but as he struggles to prove Luke’s innocence and his own he faces the community’s prejudice and pent-up rage.

Eric Bana knows he’s playing a very unlikeable guy on Bravo’s “Dirty John,” the new limited series based on the Los Angeles Times true-crime podcast of the same name.
But he also knows it’s his job to make you — and Connie Britton’s Debra Newell — like the unlikeable John Meehan as much as possible. Or, as Bana tells TheWrap, at least create a version of him that was “not something you’d wanna turn off after the first 30 minutes.”
On the TV adaptation of “Dirty John,” Debra is smitten with the charismatic — yet creepy — John, just like the real-life Newport Beach-based interior designer was with the real-life con man she met online.

Bravo’s scripted show, Dirty John, will start airing on the network on Sunday night with Eric Bana in the lead role as John Meeham – or the crazy dirty John who steals the title. “Dirty John,” Bravo’s new limited series adapted from the podcast of the same name, does the unthinkable: It makes you not care about Connie Britton. Seriously. Other middling programs, privileged with the actor’s sharp sense of humor and warm ferocity, have tried to make audiences forget their deep-seeded attachment to the former Mrs. Coach from “Friday Night Lights”. But none have succeeded — none, until “Dirty John.”
Starring Britton as a wealthy designer looking for love in all the wrong places, the eight-part anthology series is inspired by the true and tragic events well-chronicled by Los Angeles Times reporter Christopher Goffard, first in print and later in his popular podcast, but the first three hours of this scripted iteration are cold and one-sided. As much mystery looms around the eponymous John, played by a steely-eyed Eric Bana, as there is distance bordering on apathy given to Britton’s Debra Newell.

Dirty John may tell the tale of TV's latest totally creepy relationship, but it's not the first. John Meehan's onscreen debut comes in a long line of total creeps, and while most of them are not based on real-life creeps, they're all still totally disturbing. Some were one-off relationships, like when Joey Tribbiani dated his stalker, Brooke Shields, and others lasted many episodes or even seasons to the point where we've begun to wonder what was wrong with us for watching it for so long. Serena was literally dating the Gossip Girl! We even through in a few reality shows, just to show that bad relationships are not reserved for fiction. Anyway, we must apologize in advance for how...

Before she was entwined in John Meehan's web of lies as Debra Newell, Connie Britton was playing for laughs. The star and executive producer of Dirty John's TV past goes all the way back to the early 1990s with a series of sitcoms, like Spin City and The Fighting Fitzgeralds, before things got more dramatic upon entering the 2000s with roles on The West Wing and 24. In 2006, she landed the role that made her a household name: Tami Taylor on Friday Night Lights. Since then, Britton's been a country music superstar, a ghost and mother of the Antichrist, a real person in a true-crime drama and an emergency dispatcher, among other roles. Just about any crime story can find an audience if it’s told with enough drama and intrigue. Though the true crime genre has been exploding in recent years thanks to podcasts (“Serial”) and documentary series, the widespread fascination with what makes people turn on each other — and how to withstand it — has fueled shows like “Unsolved Mysteries” and “Law & Order: Svu” for decades. As much as anything else, true crime and the fiction inspired by it has something of a built-in audience, ready and waiting to see what the hell new twist reality can serve up.
In this respect, “Dirty John” is a no-brainer of a programming choice. Christopher Goffard’s story about a drug addict grifter marrying wealthy women until they were no longer of use to him was released in October of last year as both a written Los Angeles Times report and a podcast. The latter...

Bravo said Tuesday that it is canceling the planned red carpet ahead of tonight’s world premiere of its anthology series Dirty John in Hollywood out of respect for victims of the wildfires still burning in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
The screening at the NeueHouse Hollywood will go on as planned, but the 5:30 Pm red carpet that was to feature the series’ cast and crew was scrapped. It comes ahead of the series debut November 25 at 10 Pm on Bravo.
It comes as several events around Hollywood have been pared down as fires continue to burn northwest of Los Angeles. AFI Fest has canceled red carpets ahead of four of its gala screenings, the latest today with the Steve McQueen-directed Widows.

Baby, can’t you see? Connie Britton is falling! And that’s a really bad thing, because Eric Bana seems like a really bad dude in this newly-released trailer for Bravo’s upcoming limited series “Dirty John.”
In the almost two-minute teaser for the true-crime-podcast-turned-thriller-tv-show, Britton’s Debra Newell is smitten with Bana’s John Meehan. And, of course, we know this is all going to go to hell cause the trailer is set to a haunting cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic.”
The Newport Beach, California, interior designer’s daughters (Julia Garner and Juno Temple) are nervous their mom is so deeply in love (maybe lust?) with this mysterious doctor who is prone to some random outbursts and creepy tendencies.

Bravo's forthcoming adaptation of Dirty John is getting dangerously close. Starring Connie Britton and Eric Bana, the series will closely follow the one-season true-crime podcast, which details how successful interior designer Debra Newell got tricked by charming doctor John Meehan.
To no surprise, John already appears sketchy as hell in the recently released trailer. In it, viewers can see snippets of Debra digging into John's past as their romance progresses. For those who haven't listened to the podcast, let's just say it's not pretty. Watch the ominous trailer above before the series release on Nov. 25.

Bravo is giving viewers a Thanksgiving treat!
The cable network has dropped the official trailer for Dirty John, and it confirmed that the series will debut November 25.
It stars Connie Britton and Eric Bana and is based on the popular Los Angeles Times articles and podcast of the same name.
The eight-episode limited series will follow the fraught relationship between Debra Newell (Britton) and con artist John Meehan (Bana).
The trailer certainly brings a lot of drama as it shows what is supposed to be a loving relationship breaking down into something that's the stuff of nightmares.
Bravo handed Dirty John a two-season order earlier this year, but the first season will feature a self-contained storyline.
It's unclear at this stage what the sophomore run will be about, but there will likely be more clarity on that once the freshman run gets underway.
Oxygen is also working on a companion...

The hit Wondery/La Times podcast “Dirty John” has a trailer. Bravo’s limited series follows the doomed and enigmatic romance of Debra Newell (Connie Britton) and John Meehan (Eric Bana), a serial Newport Beach charmer whose licensed medical professional exterior hides a deadly past.
The first teaser played solely on Bana’s ability to be effortlessly charming, and then genuinely off-putting, with just a slight adjustment. This look at the show also includes Britton playing Newell’s repeated denials of Meehan’s wrongdoing and a look at Newell’s skeptical daughter Terra (Julia Garner) and concerned mother (Jean Smart).
In addition to a sneak peek at the some of the intrigue that also made “Dirty John” one of last year’s biggest podcast hits, the show also confirmed its release date for next month, just in time for Thanksgiving viewing. The series, which will air in eight parts, comes...
