At first glance, “Martha Stewart’s Home for the Holidays” appeared to be a promo for a regular Martha Stewart special — until the subtitle popped up that read, “Topless Christmas Special.” From there, Stewart did a variety of normal, Martha Stewart-type things, like setting a holiday table and making beeswax candles. The only difference was that she was nude from the waist up, with a black censor bar covering her breasts.
Starring Ana Gasteyer as Stewart, “Martha Stewart’s Home for the Holidays: Topless Christmas Special,” is one of SNL’s most beloved holiday sketches. It was co-written by Gasteyer and writer Norm Hiscock, the latter of whom recently jumped on the phone with me to talk about the making of a true holiday classic.

‘I’ll Do It If She’s Topless’
The way the sketch began was that Ana Gasteyer was looking to do a sketch with Martha Stewart.

Trump’s Second Act
He’s back: There wasn’t really anywhere else I could start this week, was there? Donald Trump is back and from January, he will be President for the second time. Read this fantastic report from our politics ed, Ted Johnson, who deftly captured the fast-moving events and the context around the result. Republican Donald Trump has been re-elected President of the United States of America, and most of Hollywood is sad and angry. Outspoken liberal celebrities are reacting with bitter disappointment following Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ loss.
As the results came in Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning, actor John Cusack wrote on X that “the fact that the country would choose to destroy itself by voting in a convicted felon rapist and Nazi is a sign of deep nihilism, to put it mildly.”
“Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay blamed centrist Democrats who stuck with President Joe Biden and his policies until it was too late and failed to counter Trump’s message of economic populism.
“Who would have guessed lying about Biden’s cognitive health for 2 yrs, refusing to do an open convention for a new nominee, never mentioning public healthcare & embracing fracking, the Cheneys & a yr long slaughter...

“The Big Short” and “Don’t Look Up” director Adam McKay took to social media as Donald Trump edged closer to victory in the U.S. presidential election, saying he plans to leave the Democratic Party.
In a post on X, he shared a link for updating voter registration and wrote: “It is time to abandon the Dem Party. I’m registering Green Party or Working Families. But am open to ideas.”
McKay has previously supported the Democratic Party, and endorsed Bernie Sanders for president in 2016 and 2020. However, in 2019 he said he had also joined the Democratic Socialists of America. He has been vocal about the need for climate action and signed an open letter to Joe Biden in October 2023 calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
He criticized the Democratic Party’s election strategy in a post on X earlier in the night, writing: “Who would have guessed lying about Biden’s cognitive health for 2 yrs,...

If Kamala Harris wins the presidency, one aspect of her campaign that will be highlighted will be her support from Never Trumpers, the group of Republicans who want to ensure that the former president never makes it back to the White House.
In the election of 2024, these figures have been some of the most vocal in making the case that this isn’t a normal election cycle, that democracy is at stake. Proof enough is that many of them will be casting their ballots for a Democrat for the first time.
Adam Kinzinger is one of the them, having spoken at the Democratic National Convention and appeared on the campaign trail for Harris. Steve Pink’s The Last Republican is backstory of how Kinzinger, a staunch conservative, got to that place. Election Day, aka the most fraught, divisive, and anxiety-inducing time of American politics, is almost upon us once again ... and Hollywood, as always, tends to offer up the perfect distraction (like this past episode of "SNL"). Then again, I suppose that depends on your definition of "perfect." In August of 2008, while then-Presidential nominees Barack Obama and John McCain battled it out in a heated race that would go on to define the next decade-plus of global diplomacy and policymaking, "Yellowstone" star Kevin Costner and co-leads Paula Patton and Kelsey Grammer were busy starring in arguably one of the most misguided pieces of political entertainment until Adam McKay decided he was the right person to write and direct 2018's "Vice." "Swing Vote" tells the story of how one random, apolitical citizen (Costner) inexplicably becomes the deciding vote in the entire Presidential election, with both major parties fighting to earn his endorsement.

Simon Rex and Dustin Milligan have a lot in common. Not only are they the co-stars of the new indie comedy Operation Taco Gary’s, which just premiered at the Austin Film Festival, but they also came up in teen dramas in the 2000s before a recent resurgence.
Rex has had a second wind in his career since his critically acclaimed role in Sean Baker’s Red Rocket, while Milligan had a supporting role in the upcoming Netflix romantic comedy Hot Frosty.
Now, Rex and Milligan have their eyes set on the comedy world. For Rex, it’s a return to form since his Scary Movie days. For Milligan, it’s an exciting new chapter in a bustling career. But one thing is for sure — if the comedies they make are downright charming and riotous as Operation Taco Gary’s, we can’t wait to see more.

Every now and then a man comes along who just captures the moment and becomes the It Guy. Right now, Timothée Chalamet is that guy, so much so that a lookalike contest was recently held in which the winner got $50 – do you know how many peaches that could buy?! Adding to the story, however, was that Timothée Chalamet himself turned up…looking the least like Timothée Chalamet out of anyone there.
Over the weekend, the Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest was held in New York City, bringing thousands into Washington Square Park to see who had the aura of the namesake celebrity. It seemed like everywhere you turned there was Willy Wonka and Paul Atreides and even just street clothes Chalamet. According to multiple sources, RSVP numbers were anywhere between 900 and 2,500. That’s an insane amount of people that look like – or were at least told they looked like – Timothée Chalamet.

The hosts of Deadline’s Doc Talk and ElectionLine podcasts are getting together for an unprecedented crossover episode. Think Law & Order: Svu meets Law & Order: Organized Crime; Angel meets Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Supernatural meets Scooby-Doo (Zoinks! — that really happened).
Doc Talk’s John Ridley and Matt Carey and the ticket of ElectionLine’s Dominic Patten and Ted Johnson debate the greatest political documentary of all time. The candidates may surprise you – one from Brazil, another from Québec, a classic about JFK, a groundbreaking series that ran 14 episodes, and a 7-hour and 47-minute epic ostensibly about an all-star athlete turned accused murderer.
And we plumb a mystery: why conservatives have such a hard time making a documentary that’s any good. Johnson, who is based in Washington, D.C., shares what Steve Bannon had to tell him on that subject. And Patten, Deadline’s Executive Editor, Legal, Labor & Politics,...

Back in July, Djimon Hounsou signed on to star in a shark thriller called Beneath the Storm alongside Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton) and Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2), with Tommy Wirkola (Violent Night) writing and directing for Sony Pictures and producers Adam McKay and Kevin Messick of HyperObject Industries. While we wait to hear more information about that project, Hounsou is already moving on to another interesting film, one called The Monster. Deadline reports that Darren Lynn Bousman will be directing the film from a screenplay by Jonathan Bernstein and James Greer, the writers of Steven Soderbergh’s Unsane.
The Monster is set to begin filming in Danbury, Connecticut in November. The story follows two millennials who make quick money by leasing incredible New York City apartments they don’t own to people who don’t know they are being scammed. Who invented Bitcoin? That question has become a captivating mystery for the digital age along the lines of whatever happened to D.B. Cooper or who was Deep Throat in the Watergate scandal.
Documentarian Cullen Hoback thinks he has the answer. His new HBO documentary “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery” digs into the rise of crypto currencies and the effort to uncover the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto, the nom de plume used by the author of the 11-page white paper that set Bitcoin and the broader crypto craze in motion after it was distributed widely online on Oct. 31, 2008.
For Hoback, diving into crypto-mania was a natural segue after he probed the netherworld of the internet in his 2021 HBO docuseries “Q: Into the Storm.” That six-episode series posited a theory about the people who are fueling the dangerous and delusional theories peddled under the moniker of QAnon. Neon opens Anora, its fifth consecutive Cannes Palm d’Or winner, in limited release this weekend — the highest-profile awards contender to hit theaters this awards season in a lively specialty weekend.
Sean Baker’s comedy debuts on six screens in New York and LA. The three NYC locations will be playing select screenings in the film’s original 35mm. Presales have been solid, and Neon will add San Francisco, Chicago, Boston and Toronto next week, expanding thereafter to wide release by mid-to-late November.
Anora, its ensemble cast of Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yuriy Borisov, Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan in a comic variation of a modern Cinderella story, play well with audiences. Critics have swooned over the film with a 98% Rotten Tomatoes score (see Deadline review), a similar trajectory to Neon’s 2019 Palme d’Or winner Parasite.

The increasing predominance of streaming content over theatrical releasing continues apace with Brothers, a Legendary Entertainment production that distributor Amazon MGM Studios dropped into a handful of theaters for a week without critics’ screenings, ahead of its Oct. 17 debut on Prime. That strategy will likely turn out to be fortuitous for a mildly amusing feature that lacks the heft to compete at the early awards-season box office, leaving the film to find a less-committed audience in the streaming-verse.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill on Sunday that sought to ward off catastrophic risks of highly advanced artificial intelligence models.
The bill, Sb 1047, was the most controversial AI bill of the legislative session, with dozens of activists and AI companies lining up on either side. The bill, Sb 1047, was the most controversial AI bill of the legislative session, with dozens of activists and AI companies lining up on either side. Between the Temples (Nathan Silver)
In a state of arrested development after his wife unexpectedly died from a freak accident, Ben Gottlieb (Jason Schwartzman) is suicidal, pleading to a truck to just run him over and begging that he be fired from his job as cantor at the local Jewish temple in upstate New York. While this set-up may not scream comedy, Between the Temples is in fact hilarious, packed with endless jokes and adoration for physical gags while we witness Ben find new meaning in life through an unexpected acquaintance. Above all, Nathan Silver’s feature, from a script he co-wrote with C. Mason Wells,is a thrillingly alive, nimble piece of filmmaking: shot on 16mm by Sean Price Williams with...

“The X-Presidents! Struck by a hurricane-powered dose of radiation while appearing at a celebrity golf tournament, our four former presidents are charged with powers and strengths, rendering them all the more extraordinary! Gerald Ford! Ronald Reagan! Jimmy Carter! George Bush! Pitting their arsenal of phenomenal powers against Earth and interplanetary foes alike, the fabulous foursome for right against might. X-Presidents!”
This was America’s introduction to Robert Smigel’s recurring Saturday Night Live cartoon X-Presidents, which was part of the animated TV Funhouse segments that ran on the show from 1996 until 2008. After the first Ambiguously Gay Duo cartoon and a few segments of Fun with Real Audio, TV Funhouse’s eighth cartoon was X-Presidents, a superhero parody starring America’s then roster of living ex-presidents who were imbued with non-specific superpowers.

Before Kathryn Hahn went mainstream in 2021 for her portrayal of Agatha Harkness in Disney+’s WandaVision, she was known for starring in many comedy films. Interestingly, one of her previous works did not appeal to her son.

It’s normal for celebrities to have a couple of projects they aren’t proud of, but this specific one was quite important for Hahn even though her child didn’t necessarily find it an attractive role.

Kathryn Hahn starred in the 2008 comedy film Step Brothers directed by Adam McKay and she portrayed Alice Huff. The film revolves around two stepbrothers, 39-year-old Brennan Huff and 40-year-old Dale Doback, both immature adults forced to live together after their parents decided to marry.

Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha All Along has just dropped its first two episodes on Disney+. Hahn returns to her role as Agatha Harkness, the villain that she played to perfection in Elizabeth Olsen’s WandaVision. While fans were initially excited to see her back, the further updates about the series and Marvel’s fall from grace in the intervening years have been bad news for Agatha.

However, fans who want more of Hahn’s performance can root for another sequel starring the actress. Hahn played the s*x-crazed wife in the 2008 comedy flick, Step Brothers. While a sequel for the film has been in the air since its release, fans never got one. But it might not be too late for an entertaining sequel from that IP.

‘Mickey 17’ Trailer: Robert Pattinson Keeps Getting Killed in Bong Joon Ho’s Follow-Up to ‘Parasite’
Robert Pattinson hates dying, especially after kicking the bucket 17-plus times for Bong Joon Ho’s sci-fi-novel adaptation “Mickey 17.”
The feature, which marks writer/director Bong’s long-awaited follow-up to his Best Picture-winning “Parasite,” centers on Pattinson’s title character Mickey, who is a disposable employee called an Expendable. Mickey is sent on a human expedition sent to colonize ice world Niflheim; any mission that is considered too dangerous for humans is a task for Mickey. And of course, there are more than a few Mickey-related fatalities.
Steven Yeun, Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, and “Blink Twice” breakout Naomi Ackie also star.
Bong adapted Edward Ashton’s novel “Mickey 7” but added more deaths for the lead character. The film project was first announced in January 2022, which came before the novel’s release in February via Macmillan imprint St. Martin. The film was originally set for a March 29, 2024 release before being...

The 71st Primetime Emmys were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2019. While it was a big night for shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Fleabag,” and “Chernobyl” in their respective genre fields, there were a fair amount of surprises that the Gold Derby odds didn’t predict. Perhaps the biggest shock of the night was Jason Bateman winning Best Drama Directing for “Ozark’s” season two premiere, “Reparations.” How was he able to overcome his sixth place odds and win his first Emmy for directing?
When the nominations were announced on July 16th, 2019, “Game of Thrones” led the drama field with 32 bids for its eighth and final season. It was followed by “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark” and “This Is Us,” all earning 9 noms each. “Game of Thrones” was touted to handily win its fourth Drama Series Emmy as well as its third for directing.

What if the answer to our planet’s climate crisis was a question? That instead of limiting our spectrum of solutions to recycling more, driving electric cars, and voting (which are indeed great things), we let our imaginations run wild — exploring the possibilities of what could happen if we both collectively and individually approached climate change “as if we love the future?”
It’s a question that climate activist and marine biologist, Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson, asks in her new book, What If We Get It Right? It’s a...

HBO has picked up to series The Chair Company, its half-hour comedy pilot starring Tim Robinson who co-wrote it with his writing partner Zach Kanin.
The pickup for The Chair Company, which Robinson and Kanin executive produce with Adam McKay and Todd Schulman, follows the series order earlier this week for HBO’s other 2024 comedy pilot, an untitled ensemble half-hour written, executive produced by and starring Rachel Sennott, making for a 2-for-2 pilot-to-series batting average.
With HBO also recently handing a straight-to-series order to a Bill Lawrence-Matt Tarses comedy starring Steve Carell, this marks the largest contingent of new comedy series at the premium network in years as it has ramped up half-hour development in light of stalwarts Curb Your Enthusiasm and Barry coming to an end and the pending departure of Somebody, Somewhere.

With his long hair, sunglasses and bellbottoms, Hal Ashby was the epitome of the 1970s flower child, even though he was a decade older than most of the filmmakers working at the time. Though his flame burned brightly and briefly, he left behind a series of classics that signified the nose-thumbing, countercultural attitude of the era, with a bit of humanism and heart thrown in for good measure. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of his films, ranked worst to best.
Born on September 2, 1929 in Utah, Ashby ambled around before becoming an apprentice editor for Robert Swink, working for Hollywood legends William Wyler and George Stevens. He moved up the ranks to become an editor for Norman Jewison, with whom he shared a fraternal and professional relationship. They cut five films together, including “The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!” (1966), which earned him his first Oscar nomination,...

A story that doesn’t seem fresh on paper — and one previously explored in Steven Spielberg’s “Munich” — may be a barrier to entry for some audiences. But Swiss director Tim Fehlbaum’s “September 5,” which takes audiences inside the airtight, under-air-conditioned ABC News control room as terrorists commandeered the 1972 Summer Olympics mere yards away, is a gripping, singular depiction that stands on its own merits.
In a tight 94 minutes, Fehlbaum pivots from the mayhem outside and solely toward the handful of sports broadcasters forced to improvise as eight Palestinian militants, known as Black September, took the Israeli Olympic team hostage. All 11 hostages were killed. Though going into this movie with that historical perspective doesn’t impede the tension onscreen — even if “September 5’s” psychological inquiry into the crisis and how it reshaped TV news, and how that very broadcast coverage may have spurred a nightmare to its worst possible horizon,...

John Cena says he understands why David Zaslav decided to cancel the release of Coyote vs. Acme after its completion, a corporate line-toeing that aligns with his personal philosophy of, “You can’t see me.”
In late 2023, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Zaslav shelved the half-animated, half-live-action Looney Tunes movie about a hapless antagonist’s quest for justice after suffering decades of misfortune thanks to ineffective products purchased from the Acme corporation. Coyote vs. Acme, which began development long before Zaslav’s Discovery merged with WarnerMedia in 2022, was a labor of love that brought together such comedic talents as Adam McKay, James Gunn, Will Forte and Cena in an homage to the characters and cartoons that have enriched so many childhoods for the better part of the last century.
While those lucky industry insiders who got to see a test screening of Coyote vs. Acme have expressed outrage over Zaslav’s...

I’m not sure anyone I knew made a single original joke in 2004.I wasn’t innocent. As a child, my parents coaxed me into doing Honeymooners bits, filming them gleefully onto VHS tapes that would be screened for every significant other I was unfortunate enough to bring home. My...

Update: Five defendants have been charged concerning the ketamine-related death of Matthew Perry. The five individuals include a live-in assistant, two doctors, and a woman known as the “Ketamine Queen.” According to U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada, the five are associated with a “broad underground criminal network” that provided Perry and others with ketamine. Estrada says the group “took advantage of Mr. Perry’s addiction issues to enrich themselves.”
The individuals charged include Jasveen Sangha, 41, a.k.a. “The Ketamine Queen,” of North Hollywood; Dr. Salvador Plasencia, 42, a.k.a. “Dr. P,” of Santa Monica; and Eric Fleming, 54, of Hawthorne. On August 8, Fleming pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine and one count of distribution of ketamine, resulting in death, admitting to distributing the ketamine that killed Perry.

Norwegian filmmaker Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, Dead Snow, Violent Night) is headed into the open waters for a shark attack horror movie that’s been newly titled Beneath the Storm, and we’ve learned that it’s swimming our way next year.
Columbia Pictures will release Beneath the Storm in theaters August 1, 2025.
Phoebe Dynevor (Fair Play), Whitney Peak (Hocus Pocus 2) and Djimon Hounsou (A Quiet Place: Part II) star in Beneath the Storm, produced by Adam McKay and Kevin Messick.
Plot details, at this time, are still under wraps. Stay tuned for more.
Wirkola’s project is one of many new shark attack movies in the works, with Lizzy Greene starring in High Tide and Sean Byrne directing Dangerous Animals, to name just a couple.
The prospect of a shark attack movie directed by Tommy Wirkola is particularly exciting, however, as Wirkola’s movies are always wildly entertaining and extremely bloody.
