Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers Of London novels are heading to the small screen at last, and details have landed.

Writer Ben Aaronovitch came to prominence to many of us for writing two two seminal Sylvester McCoy Doctor Who stories – Remembrance Of The Daleks and Battlefield. These were in the late 1980s, under the stewardship of script editor Andrew Cartmel. Incidentally, if you want to know what the day to day process of creating this era of Doctor Who was like, Cartmel’s book Script Doctor, a collection of diary excerpts chronicling his time on the show, is well worth reading.

Post-Doctor Who, Ben Aaronovitch struck gold with novels. In 2011, he wrote Rivers Of London, the first in what would become a phenomenally successful, bestselling fantasy series.

Gregor Fisher will always be inextracably intertwined with Rab C. Nesbitt, the permanently plastered Glaswegian festering in squalor alongside long suffering wife Mary Doll, played by Elaine C. Smith. The show became so popular that writer Ian Pattison adapted it into a stage show, and stars like Sylvester McCoy, Stanley Baxter and Richard E. Grant appeared in the show. Series 3 episode Touch features a very early television appearance by David Tennant, who guest stars as barmaid Davina.

As we approach the festive season, Fisher also features in arguably the sweetest story in Richard Curtis’ Love Actually, about the friendship between his character Joe and Bill Nighy’s rock star Billy Mack.

Now though? Gregor Fisher is returning to the small screen for sitcom Only Child.

Doctor Who TV movie writer Matthew Jacobs has reunited with Paul McGann for a new Big Finish audio story.

To date, Paul McGann’s total screen time as the Doctor clocks in at under two hours, and the majority of that can be credited to screenwriter Matthew Jacobs, who penned the 1996 TV Movie. Though it’s perhaps not the most beloved piece of Doctor Who media, most fans now acknowledge that it’s an important bridge between the classic series and the glossy sheen and higher production values of the revived show.

The superb collection of Doctor Who series-by-series Blu-ray sets is set to complete the Sylvester McCoy era of the show this October. That’s thanks to the news that series 25 of the original series will be landing on the format, with a huge collection of extra features.

The four stories that make up the series are Remembrance Of The Daleks (up there with the best ever Dalek stories in Doctor Who history), The Happiness Patrol, the not-well-liked-but-i-liked-it 25th anniversary tale Silver Nemesis, and the really creepy The Greatest Show In The Galaxy. The latter not bad for a story filmed in a tent, when they couldn’t use the BBC’s usual studio facilities.

Just three episodes ago in “Boom”, the Doctor was trapped where he stood while a countdown ticked off the seconds until his death. In “Rogue”, he found himself in the same situation, but this time with the addition of a Kylie soundtrack and some excellent flirting.

We're returning to 1313 Mockingbird Lane yet again for a new television version of The Munsters, this time planned as a "darker reimagining" of the series.

Horror icon James Wan is producing a new series for Universal Studio Group (Usg) alongside showrunner Lindsey Anderson Beer (Pet Sematary: Bloodlines) and Ingrid Bisu. Wan's company, Atomic Monster, will produce this latest iteration alongside Lab Brew. The original 1964 sitcom initially aired on CBS for 70 episodes from 1964 to 1966.

According to Variety, the logline for this new version of The Munsters describes it as a horror show that "lives and breathes within the Universal Monsterverse." Between this, the recent success of Abigail (which was based on Dracula's Daughter), and the upcoming Wolf Man from Leigh Whannell, it seems like Universal is intent on making their "Dark Universe" work, even if it doesn't end up being interconnected like the MCU.

The BBC will release partially lost Doctor Who story The Celestial Toymaker on DVD and Blu-ray, complete with animated episodes, in June.

The animation of 1966 William Hartnell Doctor Who story The Celestial Toymaker was confirmed in December last year, just before David Tennant’s 14th Doctor went up against Neil Patrick Harris’ version of the character.

The BBC has now released the artwork for the DVD and Blu Ray, which you can see here.

When it comes to sci-fi universes, Doctor Who can claim to have one of the biggest. Beyond its 60 years and counting of TV adventures, the show has three spin-off series (so far), two animated stories, one failed pilot, and a collection of licensed Doctor-less adventures, countless audios, comics, books, board games, tabletop RPGs, and that’s not including the stuff we missed which people are going to remind us about in the comments.

But there is one area where the Tardis just can’t quite seem to properly land – the world of video games.

British actress Pamela Salem has died at the age of 80.

Salem, who starred in James Bond and Doctor Who, died on Wednesday, according to Big Finish Productions.

Born in 1944 in India, she played Bond’s secretary Miss Moneypenny in Sean Connery’s 1983 film Never Say Never Again, which is considered an unofficial addition to the Bond canon because it was not produced by Eon Productions.

Salem made guest appearances in Doctor Who as Professor Rachel Jensen, first appearing in 1988’s Remembrance of the Daleks episodes with Sylvester McCoy’s seventh Doctor.

She reprised the character in Counter-Measures, a Big Finish audio spin-off series. The more recent story in the series, The Dalek Gambit, was released in 2020.

She also guest starred in Big Finish’s The Fourth Doctor Adventures (reunited with Tom Baker) and then reprised the role of Toos in The Robots.

Other screen roles included 1978 crime film The Great Train Robbery...

In January 2024, Fourth Doctor companion Louise Jameson returned to Doctor Who in the short promotional film Leela vs the Time War for the release of the Season 15 Blu-ray boxset. It showed Jameson’s character on Gallifrey in the final moments of the Time War being threatened with extermination by the Daleks. “This is not how this ends,” says Leela, before transporting herself to the safety of the Tardis.

As reported by RadioTimes.com, writer/director Pete McTighe said at a BFI screening of 1977 episode “Horror of Fang Rock”, that he saw the new scene as “an opportunity to right [the] wrong” of Jameson’s character’s original exit, in which Leela was hurriedly married off to a Gallifreyan Time Lord.

McTighe has written increasingly ambitious promotional films for these series releases with original actors returning to play their roles, though the complexity of producing them means they won’t be done for every boxset.

This Saturday will see David Tennant’s 14th Doctor come face to face with The Toymaker, played by Neil Patrick Harris, in final 60th anniversary special The Giggle.

The character hasn’t been seen onscreen since his debut appearence in 1966 story The Celestial Toymaker, where he was played by Michael Gough.

The story saw First Doctor William Hartnell and his companions Steven Taylor (Blue Peter icon Peter Purves) and Dodo Chaplet (Jackie Lane) battle the titular Toymaker, as he forces The Doctor to play the impossible Trilogic Game. Meanwhile, Steven and Dodo must work their way through a series of childish games which turn out to be deadly.

On December 25 2023, the Fifteenth Doctor’s first big adventure will arrive, starring Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, and Millie Gibson as new companion Ruby Sunday. TV presenter Davina McCall will play herself in the episode, solving the long-teased mystery of which 2005 guest star would be returning (McCall voiced the Davinadroid in series one’s “Bad Wolf”).

The BBC announces in the official plot synopsis that in “The Church on Ruby Road” the Doctor will face “mythical and mysterious goblins”:

Choosing your favourite Doctor Who episode feels a bit like choosing your favourite child, except you probably don’t have 800-plus children, so maybe it’s even worse.

But that’s exactly what Doctor Who Magazine inflicted on fans earlier this year, sugaring the pill ever so slightly by combining all the multiple-episode stories into one, which helpfully narrowed the choice from over 800 episodes to 300 “TV adventures”.

Who fans were tasked with rating all episodes out of ten – narrowing it down to 37 stories – and then asked to pick their top five from this list. After much number crunching, the top 10 TV adventures were revealed.

That tricksy Russell T Davies is at it again in the latest issue of Doctor Who Magazine, and this time the particular cat he’s set among the Whovian pigeons is the possibility of a brand-new, top-secret 60th anniversary Doctor Who celebration.

Speaking in his regular “Letter From The Showrunner” column in issue 596 of the magazine, he revealed that as well as the three anniversary episodes (starring David Tennant and Catherine Tate) and various other celebrations which have been 18 months in the making, “you’re also getting extra things that sprang into being, well, yesterday.”

He goes on to explain:

“Okay, it was July, this year. But as the summer began, I was thinking about the 60th and wondered, have we done enough? So I had an idea on July 5, sent a format proposal to the team on July 20, then three scriptwriters got to work, and now, just two months later,...

The Entire Doctor Who Back Catalogue Is Coming To BBC iPlayer!

From 1st November, BBC iPlayer will host over 800 episodes of Doctor Who, including all the classic series from the very first Doctor, William Hartnell, right the way through to the 1996 TV movie with Paul McGann.

60 years ago, Doctor Who was created with a strong educational element, mixing science and history facts with adventure. Initially some stories featured no science-fiction elements outside of the Tardis and its crew. This story format petered out by the fourth season, and ′The Highlanders′ was the last example until ′Black Orchid′ in 1982.

The final story of the second season created the ′Pseudo-historical′ format – a story set in Earth′s history but with an additional science-fiction element to the Tardis crew. This format persists to the present day. By ′Best Historical Episodes′ here, we don’t mean the dozen or so purely historical stories, but are including pseudo-historical stories too.

Some of these stories have a historical setting based around a historical celebrity. Others are more intertwined with historical events and use that setting as a springboard for their stories, but they all represent the best the show has delivered so far.

Before he takes control of the Tardis as the next star of BBC’s “Doctor Who,” Ncuti Gatwa will appear as a Ken in Warner Bros.’ “Barbie.” So the BBC decided to celebrate Gatwa’s upcoming Hollywood breakout by dropping a pink Tardis next to London Bridge.

Bonnie Langford will reprise her role as Melanie Bush in the forthcoming season of “Doctor Who,” starring alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, the BBC announced Wednesday.

Langford joined the “Doctor Who” universe in 1986 when she played the companion to the Sixth and Seventh Doctors as portrayed by Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy. She then went on to appear in a cameo role in Jodie Whittaker’s final episode as the Thirteenth Doctor.

“I am absolutely thrilled to be bringing Melanie Bush back. To be part of the exceptional cast, crew and production team led by the force of nature that is Russell T Davies is a career highlight,” said Langford. “I’m so privileged and proud to have been a member of the Doctor Who family since the classic era and to be included in the new generation is phenomenal.”

We first met Mel in 1986, going on time-travelling adventures first with the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, and then his successor Sylvester McCoy in 1987. During six stories spanning 20 episodes, she encountered villains and monsters aplenty, including the plant-based slave race the Vervoids, genocidal humanoids called the Bannermen, and the infamous renegade Time Lady The Rani.

A familiar character will be returning to Doctor Who. Bonnie Langford will once again reprise her legendary role as Melanie Bush, joining Ncuti Gatwa who plays the Fifteenth Doctor in the new series, the BBC revealed today.

Big Finish has announced a mega eight-part audio drama, Once and Future, to mark the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who, reuniting an incredible seven former Doctors (so far!).

As has been customary for “Doctor Who” since it was revived in 2005, the regeneration of the Doctor into a new face as the role is passed from one actor to another is coming with a massive adventure filled with all of the series’ most famous adversaries. We, of course, have the Doctor’s famous archrival, The Master (Sacha Dhawan) telling her that this is the day that she is “erased forever,” but we also have the Daleks and Cybermen menacing the universe as well.

Waxwork Records is bringing the world multiple releases that are tied to writer/director Rob Zombie’s feature update of the classic sitcom The Munsters. They’re releasing a couple songs from the film – “It’s Zombo” and “The House of Zombo” – as a deluxe 12″ single pressed to 180 gram “Ghoul White” vinyl. The Sonny and Cher hit “I Got You Babe” is covered by Herman and Lily Munster (played by Jeff Daniel Phillips and Sheri Moon Zombie) in the movie, and their recording of the song is getting released as a single on vinyl. Now Waxwork Records is also accepting pre-orders for the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, which has a release date of October 18th.

The movie is getting a Blu-ray, DVD, digital, and Netflix release on September 27th.

A few weeks ago, it was announced that Waxwork Records is releasing a couple songs from the film – “It’s Zombo” and “The House Of Zombo” – as a deluxe 12″ single pressed to 180 gram “Ghoul White” vinyl. Now it has been revealed that Waxwork is also releasing another single from The Munsters on vinyl.
