As host of “The Apprentice,” one thing eluded Donald Trump: an Emmy. The fact that the Television Academy never awarded him one drove Trump — whom you might know is now the President of the United States of America — completely bonkers.
Trump wanted an Emmy bad enough that he went on the Hollywood campaign trail in 2008, taking trade newspaper reporters (including, um, this one) to lunch in an attempt to curry attention and grab a win for “The Apprentice.” But that was in the middle of “The Amazing Race’s” hot streak. Ultimately the closest Trump came to Emmy glory was singing the “Green Acres” theme with Megan Mullally on stage at the 2006 ceremony.
It’s a bit ironic, then, that Trump may play a hand in which shows are nominated — and ultimately win — this year’s Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series.

Without serious help, both Helen and Noah are in danger of losing everything.
Both of them cracked under pressure on The Affair Season 3 Episode 9. Helen's parents falling in line with Vic proved too much for her, and keeping the secret about Scotty's death was no longer of interest.
Noah, on the other hand, had to face over 30 years worth of lies that had been building up inside him. Now that the truth is out, can either of these two start putting their fractured lives back together?
Helen was reeling after her night with Noah. After facing off with Vic and his decision to leave, the only thing she could think of to do was to get out of the city.
In hindsight, it probably wasn't the best move. She's never gotten on well with her parents, and they simply fell in love with Vic during the dinner they recently shared.

Not until it their relationship was finally over did I realize how invested I was in Cole and Alison finding their way back to each other.
Cole had secrets that came to light on The Affair Season 3 Episode 8, but they weren't anything to do with the attempted murder of Noah Solloway. Instead, Cole has been living a lie about the love of his life.
As Alison put it, Cole had to decide whether to be the happy asshole or the miserable hero, and making his choice kind of ripped my heart out. From the look on his face, a little bit of his was torn out for good, as well.
It's hard to imagine what this will mean for the characters going forward. I continue to believe the focal point of the narrative is Noah, and even though he had his pivotal affair with Alison, once she clears up her issues with him,...

Noah screaming, "You don't know me," as he pounded into Helen was putting it mildly.
What became obvious while watching The Affair Season 3 Episode 7 is that nobody knows Noah Solloway any longer, least of all himself.
The only hint we received that Noah might understand he's one degree from being locked up in a different kind of institution is when he asked Dr. Ooh La La whether an infection can become bad enough to cause hallucinations.
I didn't feel we learned anything new here at all, though, when it came to moving things forward.
All the hour really did was point out how much more depressing things had to become before they start to get better. If they ever will get better.
While I was tweeting the Golden Globes, I saw a lot of talk about a plot twist, but I must have missed it. Was there something new that...

There are still surprises coming from Noah Solloway.
One of the big questions this season was answered by The Affair Season 3 Episode 5, which allowed Noah and Alison to spend time together for the first time since he was released from prison.
They may have been married, but Noah kept a lot of secrets close to the vest. Prison gave him the time needed to understand why he was still in love with her and couldn't let go and held the key to his conviction, as well.
This installment was a bit confusing to me, because while watching Part One: Alison, it seemed as though Noah had no idea the divorce was coming or why.
Yet as soon as we popped into Part Two, we saw from Noah's point of view he had known from a visit from Alison they would no longer be in contact and that her lawyer...

It was the loss of a child that tore Cole and Alison apart.
On The Affair Season 3 Episode 4, it seemed like their love for Joanie might start to bring them back together again.
Cole has never lost his love for Alison, despite all that she's done to break his desire for her. And if Alison was truly listening to her heart, she'd realize she never stopped loving him, either. But there is still a world of hurt stacked against them.
One of the most disturbing things about this series from The Affair Season 1 was watching the relationship of Alison and Cole disintegrate.
Cole was deeply in love with Alison, but she was in so much pain after the loss of her son, Gabriel, that even looking at him cause her more pain, reminded her of what she could no longer have: her happy family.

Oh goody!!
On The Affair Season 3 Episode 3 we got to revisit that revolting discussion about sex and consent with Audrey. A discussion only made revolting because Audrey was in the conversation. She's a real piece of work.
But in seeing it again, that meant we were seeing it from the perspective of someone else at the table, which was cool. If anyone wasn't sure as of yet, it was made abundantly clear on whom The Affair focuses when Noah's friend, visiting professor Juliette Le Gall, became a voice of the show.
More than ever before, Noah is the center of The Affair. All other characters have faded into the background a bit, and seem to be there to support his story.

Neither of the women in Noah's life at the time of Scotty's death, the women he went to prison to protect, made out all that well.
The Affair Season 3 Episode 2 gave us a peek at Helen's life a year ago and at Alison's life today. While Helen was still holding onto Noah, Alison had lost her mind and Noah, it appeared, was far from her mind.
After an entire hour devoted to Noah on The Affair Season 3 Episode 1, it was easy to lose track of the fact he's a total scumbag.
Thankfully, we checked back into reality by witnessing some of Noah's behavior at the prison. And yes, prison guards most likely treat inmates terribly. But they're in prison. Their lives suck. And if Noah had the same attitude with a prison guard he has with people in the rest of his life, what the heck did he expect?...

The Affair feels like a completely different series after this hour, doesn't it?
For starters, we only got Noah's perspective on The Affair Season 3 Episode 1, and wasn't that the first time? That means we have to take some of what we saw with a grain of salt because of the way Noah sways things in his favor.
But the good news is that after spending three years in prison, Noah isn't all that hot on himself. While he's always been a bit self-deprecating, the only thing I'm guessing he is portraying as a little more dramatic than in actuality is Helen's clinging nature.
Helen never gave up on Noah, that's true. And if he really told her to wait, as he recalled from the first time she visited in prison, he may be reading more into her actions than she's really trying to convey. Maybe he needs to believe someone still wants him.

All of the things you've heard about The Affair Season 3?
You're about to put them to the test.
Showtime has released The Affair Season 3 Episode 1 a little over a week early.
It will have the bad words bleeped and all that fun stuff, but if you can't wait, or if you don't yet have Showtime and have been wondering if it's worth it, now's your chance to do some exploring.
The story picks up three years later.
And it also picks up, from what I've heard, right in the middle of last season and three years.
It will probably explore every minute in between, too. Because this is The Affair, and that's what The Affair does and at which it excels.
Messing with your mind.
That's why we're also expecting a fifth perspective to be added to the third season. The more the merrier, right?

When The Affair Season 1 first started on Showtime, we really had no idea what was in store.
The gist of it was Noah and Helen took their family to Montauk for the summer. Noah, a writer, found it difficult to live under the same roof with Helen's pretentious and wealthy parents.
Struggling to find his own words in the shadow of Helen's father, an extremely successful novelist, Noah found solace in a local woman, Alison.
The affair was both torrid and romantic, depending upon whose view the story was being told from, and that is part of the appeal of the series. For Season 1, the perspective shifted equally in each episode by Alison and Noah.
Noah saw Alison as the sexual predator, her dresses a little too short, her sweaters a little too tight. Alison saw Noah as a romantic lead, caring when she needed him, and her outfits?...

Warning: If you have not watched The Affair Season 2 finale and do not want to know who killed Scott Lockhart, do not ready any further. I’m serious. Not … another … word. That said, no matter which of the likely suspects you had your cash on (unless it was Whitney. Whitney doesn’t drive, people!), odds are good you’re, at least in part, correct. Depending, I guess, on whose version of events you believe. Only one, however, exonerates Noah. We open in the present, where Detective Jeffries has returned to the scene of the crime — the roadside spot with … Continue reading →

Love takes many forms on The Affair: It's a salve to heal old wounds, a blade to carve new ones, an act of possession, and an obsession. Love is rarely an act of true selflessness, though, and that's what makes the finale of this second season so startling. The most selfless and caring act comes from the show's most unlikely character … Noah.I hate Noah Solloway more than I've hated any television character this year. He's the embodiment of a virulent brand of masculinity that rarely gets checked, if ever. As we watch his perspective, which spans the first of the half of the finale, Noah frames himself in familiar ways: He believes he's essentially a good and brave man, despite his selfish mistakes. The Affair has spent a lot of time casting Noah as the closest thing it has to a villain, yet the last scene of the...

Warning: The following recap contains major spoilers for The Affair‘s Season 2 finale. Read on at your own risk.
Ah, it seems like just yesterday that Helen was getting put in handcuffs for that wine-and-marijuana-induced fender bender.
In hindsight, she was really just getting warmed up for the main event — that is, mowing down Scotty Lockhart.
During Sunday’s sophomore finale of The Affair, it was revealed that Helen was indeed the one behind the wheel when Scotty was run over — but only because she wasn’t paying attention to the road when Alison pushed the Lockhart brother into it.

With just one episode left in The Affair Season 2 (and a third season newly confirmed by Showtime), Montauk returns to the forefront of the story. Cole and Luisa seek Cherry’s approval and a place to marry. Alison realizes there is no place like home. And Noah realizes she doesn’t mean a New York City high-rise. But we begin in the courtroom, where Cole is on the stand. The prosecution asks him to recount the night Noah threatened to kill Scotty for knocking Whitney up, and Gottlief does his best to admit get the guy to admit he hates his former … Continue reading →

Checking InThis week's "Affair" surprise: A same-sex pairing! Which is to say, for the first time in the show's history, tonight's episode featured the perspectives of our two leading men. Not that the women in their lives don't play a major role in the action (even off-screen, Helen has a major presence), but Cole and Noah, paired together, prove an interesting contrast, especially as both grapple with key male relationships in their lives. Read More: Review: 'The Affair' Season 2 Episode 10 Features A Lot of Real Talk This switch-up inspired me to do some counting I've been meaning to get to for a while. As of this episode, here's how things add up Pov-wise (not counting Episode 9, which featured all four points of view): Noah: 7 parts Alison: 5 parts Helen: 4 parts Cole: 4 parts So what happens in Episode 12? Well, a Cole/Alison episode makes sense, given the fact...

Is happiness attainable? Is it ultimately a fleeting emotion, unsustainable for long periods of time? Or does a person choose to trade happiness for comfort and reliability? These questions lurk beneath the surface of this episode. The answers to these questions, as we learn before episode's end, are complicated and heartbreaking. The Affair really understands heartbreak. It isn't showy or overly melodramatic here. This is the quiet pain of realizing an ex-lover has moved on, even as you still want them. This is an attempt to plumb the depths of loneliness. After the unfiltered truth of last episode, The Affair returns to the juxtaposed perspectives of Noah and Alison — with an unexpected catch. The show has jumped a year ahead in time. Alison is struggling on two fronts: she's raising a child, and she has rediscovered her childhood dream of becoming a doctor. Joanie's paternity weighs heavily. Is Cole really...

With just two episodes of The Affair Season 2 to go, the past and the present are converging, with Scotty Lockhart’s death still squarely in the middle. We open episode 10 in the now, as Noah, Alison and Gottlief pull up to the courthouse for Noah’s trial to find a media circus looming. Helen walks by with Dr. Vic (really, Helen? He’s hot, but ew!). Gottlief tells Noah and Alison to follow him and not talk to anyone. Then it’s time for Noah’s perspective on a day a year after last week’s events, when we left him stranded in the hurricane the night … Continue reading →

This far into Season 2 of Showtime’s The Affair, I have to admit, I’m a little done with episodes that attempt to pass off wildly different versions of the same events as the mysterious workings of two separate minds. While this episode was intriguing — bringing Noah and Helen together for the most substantial amount of time since he bolted for the writers cabin — I gave up on figuring out how to meld the two versions into a probable truth. We learned some not-so-surprising stuff about Whitney in the front end of Helen’s parcel. After that: There was a book signing. Helen was there. Noah … Continue reading →

If I had to use one word to describe this episode, it would be "nostalgia." The feeling courses through the actions of each character: Nostalgia for who they used to be, the way their relationships once were, and the illusions they used to hold. Sometimes, I think of The Affair as the television equivalent of that certain ex you can’t quit, the one who is ponderous but has moments of greatness. You keep coming back because you’re wistful. I wouldn’t go so far to say the show has been brilliant lately, but it's developed a lot of interesting moments.Unfortunately, there’s also a lot of very expected, shakily-written ones: when Noah and his publicist, Eden, get hot and heavy before she stops the action; how Noah’s version of his book signing is full of beautiful women (one of whom makes an unsubtle pass at a...

On this week’s episode of The Affair on Showtime, we hit the accelerator on our story a bit and see Helen’s and Noah’s perspective on consecutive timeframes. Our leap to the now comes sooner than we’re used to. And Alison’s sojourn home in last week’s outing takes on potential new significance, if the timing is correct. We start with Helen, who is watching Trevor working on a school project with Stacey’s help. She tells them to clean up their work and get ready to go to a ballgame with their dad, which thrills Margaret to no end. She begins Margareting in earnest. Can we talk hair … Continue reading →

Checking In Tracking the timeline of "The Affair," from week to week, is complicated even if you're just focusing on the events prior to Scotty's death. It's because the show isn't afraid to jump forward in time in fits and starts — sometimes an episode will pick up the day after the previous one. This time, we're looking at a leap of about six weeks — at least, it's been six weeks since Alison and Noah have seen each other. But when actual events, like Helen's release from prison or Alison's trip back to Montauk occur within that time frame, it's a little blurry; just as we've come to expect from this highly subjective show. Read More: Review: 'The Affair' Season 2 Episode 5 Hints at The Future She SaidHelen might be home from jail, but her "one minor lapse in judgment, one mildly embarrassing incident" (in mother Margaret's words), is still an issue.

The Affair gives me emotional whiplash. Last week I felt the show was at its worst with one of the most ponderous, morose, and boring episodes. This week it’s back in my good graces by juxtaposing the perspectives of Alison and Cole to great effect. A lot of the time, the framing device of The Affair gets bogged down in minute details (characters wholly absent, different clothing, dramatically conflicting tones) when circling the same incidents in different perspectives. Episode 205 eschews this for a seamlessness between their memories. But it isn’t a perfect episode. The flash-forward dealing with Noah’s upcoming murder case still feels like an afterthought the writers only remember to include at the very last moment. But there are some worthwhile developments in the few minutes the flash-forward is given. Most interestingly, it isn’t told from any of the main character’s perspectives. Jon meets...

Last week, I said that The Affair finally hit its stride, creating a wholly satisfying episode with a clear theme and some venom to it. I spoke too soon. Episode four decides to prove me very, very wrong. I don’t think I’ve ever been more infuriated with this show. Helen’s perspective, which begins the episode, doubles down on some of the worst aspects of The Affair, particularly the emptiness and morose emotionality. There were a few worthwhile developments, so it isn’t an utterly pointless episode. The first chapter is from Helen’s perspective, beginning during divorce proceedings. Jon eviscerates Noah, recounting his most recent transgressions. It first seems that Noah and his lawyer are hopelessly outmatched and he’ll lose custody. The scene pivots when the judge hears Helen’s financial details — the worth of her Park Slope brownstone, the kids’ private schooling — and seems to side more with Noah.

I’ll admit, this week’s episode of Showtime’s The Affair — told from the perspectives of imploding marrieds Noah and Helen — was a head-scratcher for me. Would Helen really unravel in such borderline slapstick fashion after 45 years of being the very model of enviable cool? Would Noah — no matter how much of a lovestruck egomaniac he may be — really watch his son writhing in agony on the bathroom floor of a cheap hotel room and not make a beeline for the hospital? But maybe that is the point. The depths to which this situation is dragging everyone involved seems bottomless. And … Continue reading →

A few days ago I had a conversation with a friend parsing out our mixed feelings about The Affair. Here’s what we realized: The Affair has no central theme or authoritative artistic point of view. It’s not that The Affair provides easy answers — it’s that the show isn’t asking the right questions in the first place. Episode three of this season is the first time I felt like The Affair had anything thematically meaningful to say about love, divorce, and relationships. (Maybe with the exception being Helen’s perspective. More of her, please.) This episode goes back to the set up from season one comparing the perspectives of Noah and Alison.Noah’s chapter begins exactly where his head seems to usually be: Sex. We hear him and Alison having sex before we see them on the couch in their cabin. But this sex scene is...

Previously: Review: 'The Affair' Season 2 Episode 1 Lets Helen Speak Checking InEpisode 2, turns out, is a surprise on a number of levels. For one thing, it functions as the second part of last week's season premiere (the chapters are explicitly labeled as Part 3 and Part 4), and for another it introduces the viewpoint of Cole. Of the show's core quartet, Alison's now-ex-husband has always been the most enigmatic, and while like everyone else in "The Affair" his Pov is not to be trusted, it's still an opportunity to dig deeper into the character. (A character, let's remember, we last saw in Season 1 threatening Noah with a gun.) She SaidAlison's version of the day we saw last week (from Noah and Helen's perspectives) starts off with an abundance of chill. After saying goodbye to Noah as he heads into the city, Alison quietly putters around their borrowed house before heading into...

Checking In If you followed Indiewire's "Affair" reviews during Season 1, you might remember that TV Critic Ben Travers and I split up each piece, with him focusing on Noah's portion of the episodes while I focused on Alison's version of the story. But, with perhaps a few exceptions, I'll be handling this season alone. There are two reasons for this. One was pragmatic: "The Affair" now airs on the same night as "The Leftovers" and "Homeland," two shows that Ben loves, and we had legitimate concerns that covering three shows on the same night for over two months would, you know, kill Ben. (Which would be bad.) The other reason, though, was a result of how "The Affair" evolved over its first season. We split up our analysis of the POVs operating under the assumption that, at a certain point, some sort of objective truth would reveal itself over the course of the series,...

I’ve always been attracted to how memory is shaped by emotion, which makes The Affair essential viewing for me. But the show reveals its flaws when focusing on the titular affair, and at times in season one, it felt like the writers were straining the suspension of disbelief in how radically different the perspectives of its lead characters were. Perhaps this is why the second season premiere works so well. Even when the differences are major, they all make sense emotionally. The episode is split between Noah and a new perspective: Helen’s, which is when it really hits its stride.Noah’s chapter primarily involves his trip into the city. He meets with his publisher/agent Harry about his decision to jettison the murder in the novel for a new, far less dynamic ending. Harry urges Noah to reconsider. There’s an interesting moment when Harry asks Noah...

The superhero boom is about to come full circle.
Though 2008’s Iron Man is generally held as the first great comic book movie of the current period (Batman Begins doesn’t count, because while it’s a superhero movie, it’s about a million miles away from being a comic book movie), Watchmen probably did more to shape the McU and the Dceu. It was the moment when the post-superhero movie came into existence (assuming you ignore the claims of The Incredibles in 2004), launching the contradiction of pulpy tone and ideological weight that continues to shape the genre now.
And now, 6 years after the film – a flawed but brilliant adaptation of the source (no matter what Alan Moore might claim) – it looks like the source is going to be readapted by the same man for TV.
According to Collider, Zack Snyder has met with HBO to talk about a Watchmen TV series.

A review of tonight's "Girls" coming up just as soon as I'm the girl who gets killed in a Lifetime movie... Though "Girls" hasn't taken any time off since last week's episode, "Close Up" has the feel of a mid-season premiere, if not the start of a whole new season. Iowa is done, and so is Hannah and Adam's relationship, and now it's time to catch up with everybody and start either introducing new plots or taking big steps forward in other stories. In bouncing from character to character, plot to plot — with only the brunch scene bringing most (but not all) of the regulars together for a few minutes — it didn't have the focus of a "Sit-In," but it's the kind of episode you have to do in an ensemble-ish comedy like this after such a tight one-character piece. What links most of the stories together is the...
