As a director, Sammo Hung often brought out the harder edge in his collaborators, his choreography was often pretty brutal even when what surrounded it was comedic. As an actor though, he definitely more readily embraced the inherently comedic qualities that his rotund body and aptitude for physical comedy afforded him. That’s very much the case in this 1990 action comedy from director and co-star Lau Kar-Wing.
Hung plays Fatty Dragon to Karl Maka’s Skinny Tiger, both of them plain clothes cops who are constantly in trouble with their bosses for skirting the rules. The plot here is convoluted, but involves the two investigating a drug ring headed by Lau Kar-Wing, many cross dressing and trans (which is Not how the film refers to them) bad guys, Dragon and Tiger tricking a gangster’s moll (Naked Killer’s Carrie Ng) into witness protection, the two of them getting thrown...

Sammo Hung invokes the spirit of Bruce Lee in this high-energy action-tribute, playing a cop obsessed with the physical legacy of “The Little Dragon”.
Teaming up with the infamous “Skinny Tiger” (Karl Maka – the “Aces Go Places” series), Sammo becomes the larger ‘half’ of a luck-starved, crime fighting duo forced to fight a running battle against a crime syndicate of triad gangsters.

[…] Cinema City’s comedies were dominant soon after they first appeared and made fat profits back in ’79. Thus, the company over-expanded, recruiting a large number of directors, including New Wave directors. More than ten directors joined forces with the company all at once. They worked either in a collaboration, such as Tsui Hark [Aces Go Places 3 (83), All the wrong spies (83), Working Class(85)], Kirk Wong or in a satellite alliance, like Dennis Yu [Comedy (84), Musical Singer (85)] and Yuen Woo-ping. The box office reception of these films was only average; some others, for example, Life After Life and Once Upon a Rainbow, even flopped. 1984 could be said to be the heyday of Cinema City, when comedies such as Happy Ghost, Kung Hei Fat Choy and Merry Christmas were produced. It was precisely because of the dominance of Cinema City that the New Wave migrated to the mainstream cinema at an accelerated pace. (source: “Hong Kong New Wave Cinema” by Pak Tong Cheuk). One of...

Maybe It's Love. Photo courtesy of Celestial Pictures. The inspired "Shaw Sisters" retrospective at Metrograph focuses on women filmmakers who worked at the legendary Hong Kong studio. Two of the films—Maybe It's Love (1984) and My Name Ain't Suzie (1985)—were directed by Angie Chen. After directing a third feature, Chen turned to commercials and documentaries.Chen's life encompasses a broad swath of Chinese history. Born in Shanghai, she and her family caught the last train to Hong Kong during the civil war. They relocated for a time in Taiwan, moving back to Hong Kong when Chen's father left his family for Germany. Chen won a scholarship to a college outside Chicago, then transferred first to the University of Iowa before enrolling at UCLA. While translating a screenplay, she met Jackie Chan, who made her his assistant director on Dragon Lord (1982), a martial arts film shot in South Korea. Back in Hong Kong,...

Ringo Lam’s death this past December 29 at the age of 63 sparked outpourings of appreciation from across the world, with attention in America focused mostly on his two most famous films, City on Fire (1987) and Full Contact (1992), each of which were elevated to the canon in the days when Hong Kong movies could be found here for the most part only on cheap, imported, usually dubbed VHS tapes in the country’s more adventurous video stores. City on Fire was famous more as the inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs (1992) than on its own merits, while Full Contact delivered all the gory nihilistic charms of a grindhouse cinema that was vastly more alive than anything Hollywood ever bothered to produce. But there’s much more to Lam’s work than cheap thrills and story material for directorial magpies. Ringo Lam was part of a remarkable generation of filmmakers, working...

“Skinny Tiger, Fatty Dragon” is a Hong Kong buddy cop film starring Sammo Hung and Karl Maka directed by Lau Kar Wing. This is the second last film Wing directed, with “Innocent Killer” (1994) being his last time in the director’s chair. The film is clearly inspired by “Lethal Weapon” and Sammo does his best Bruce Lee in more than one scene, with a lot of nose thumbing and Lee’s signature fight sounds. That being said, it does stand on its own as a funny fight flick with some great action.
Hung and Maka play two Hong Kong cops who use kung fu to rough up suspects on a regular basis and chase young women just as often. After stopping a convenience store robbery, the two pals start working on a bigger case to nab a slippery crime boss by the name of Prince Tak. As you would expect,...

Sammo Hung has been involved in Martial Arts since childhood and even at the ripe old age of 64, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down (Thank god). It was great to see Sammo back in big movies over the past few years, which includes Rise Of The Legend and Once Upon A Time In Shanghai, both made in 2014.
Here are three upcoming Sammo Hung movies to look forward too this year and fingers crossed he works one more time with Peking opera brothers Jackie Chan and Yuen Biao, before they retire.
*Jackie Chan was set to play the lead role in My Beloved Bodyguard, but due to filming Dragon Blade he couldn’t make the movie. Andy Lau stepped in the role later on.

Leung Kar Yan was born 20 January 1949, also known as “Beardy”, is a Hong Kong actor and director and despite being one of the most well-known faces in Hong Kong action cinema, he had no kind of martial arts training, relying on his talents to imitate the moves shown to him by the action directors on the set.
Leung Kar Yan has made so many classic kung fu movies, that this was a hard choice to put in order a Top 10, but here goes, i hope you all like it and please feel free to comment at the bottom of the page and also add your own if i miss your favorite out.
10.His Name Os Nobody
I really enjoyed this movie, there are some funny moments throughout the movie and although the kung fu isn’t really the main part of the movie till towards the end, it is still very enjoyable.
