English children's author and creator of Doctor Doolittle. He was educated at Mount St. Mary's College in Sheffield and received initial training as a civil engineer. He saw action with the Irish Guards in World War I, conceiving his famous character while in the trenches.

Served in the British army during World War I, fighting in Flanders and France. He was seriously wounded in battle and received a medical discharge.
