Set in the close-knit community of an evangelical church in Manchester, Everyone Else Burns makes its triumphant return for a second season of belly laughs and thought-provoking fun. Drewing from writer Dillon Mapletoft’s own upbringing in a fundamentalist Christian environment, this cult sitcom charmed audiences with its first outing. While Season 1 centered around family man David Lewis’ ambitions and dreams for his children, the new episodes shift focus to relationships and matters of the heart.
As ever, comedy gold arises from probing the eccentricities of cult life through the day-to-day happenings of the Lewis family. Dad David remains a hapless leader, mom Fiona seeks purpose beyond motherhood, and rebellious daughter Rachel comes of age—now faced with the prospect of an arranged marriage.
Besides sharp wit and razor-thin social satire, what makes Everyone Else Burns such unmissable viewing is its deep care for humanizing even the most extreme of characters.

Laura Adkin’s debut feature Re: Uniting tells a resonant tale of reliving college days through the lens of adulthood. The film stars Michelle Harrison, David Lewis, and Carmen Moore as six friends reunited twenty-five years after graduating. They come together on the idyllic shores of Bowen Island for laughs, bonding, and confronting how life has unfolded.
Adkin handles this reunion with thoughtful direction. She crafts complex characters instead of simple stereotypes, showing us people as they are—diverse experiences woven into lively interactions. Through conversation and subtle looks, we learn just enough about each to understand their present. Backstory exposition is wisely avoided, keeping focus on intimate moments between realistically portrayed individuals.
This emphasis on nuanced performances allows meaningful themes to emerge naturally. We observe enduring friendship resisting time’s effects. Lives devoted to family or career take shape, revealing joy and sorrow. Most powerfully, characters acknowledge life’s...

With 11 seasons under its belt, When Calls The Heart has had its share of character exits. Some we'll never get over – Rip Jack Thornton! – and some have left us hoping that we'll see the beloved characters again.
One example? The handsome Jesse Flynn (Aren Buchholz) who arrived in Hope Valley in Season 3. When Jesse first appeared, it looked like the show was setting him up as a major villain. Jesse was an outlaw who wanted Pastor Frank to relapse into his sordid former life and rejoin the gang. Instead, Jesse began to regret his past and decided to mend his ways – due in large part to his attraction to Clara Stanton (Eva Bourne).
What Has Aren Buchholz Been Up To?
Since leaving When Calls The Heart, Buchholz has appeared in a wide variety of projects, from the R-Rated thriller Heatwave to the TV movie Why Can't My Life Be A Rom Com?...

The Emmy category for Best TV Movie has had a renaissance in recent years, with more high profile projects being exclusive to the medium. In this golden TV era, the level of talent on screen and behind the camera is at an all-time high – showcased best by the level of competition here and Best Limited Series. Once so niche that they were a single combined category at the Emmys, the fields seem to get stronger and stronger every year. As a result, the list of this season’s potential TV movie nominees is incredible. Leading the pack (for me) is Amazon Prime Video’s “Red, White & Royal Blue.”
An adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s New York Times bestselling novel, the film depicts the rivalry and courtship between Henry (Nicholas Galitzine), a prince of England’s royal family, and Alex (Taylor Zakar Perez), the son of an American presidential candidate.

Independent dance label Armada Music, founded in 2003 by Dutch trance DJ and producer Armin van Buuren, Maykel Piron and manager and agent David Lewis, said Tuesday that its investment vehicle Beat Music Fund has acquired Amsterdam-based music publisher Cloud 9 Music, bolstering its publishing division.
Cloud 9’s roster includes the likes of U.S. house music veteran Green Velvet, aka Curtis Jones, aka Cajmere, South Africa’s That Girl, and Dutch DJ and producer Hardwell.
“As part of the acquisition, the teams of Armada Music’s existing publishing company, Armada Publishing B.V., and Cloud 9 Music will merge to form Armada Music Publishing,” the companies said. “Employees from Cloud 9 Music will join the team, effectively tripling its headcount.”
Financial terms weren’t disclosed. “This strategic move underscores Armada’s mission to position itself as the best partner in the in-demand global electronic dance industry, projected to reach $20.9 billion by 2033,” the firm said.

Villa Collina, a Mediterranean Revival masterpiece nestled in the hills of Los Feliz in the shadow of Griffith Observatory, has a historic Hollywood pedigree stretching back almost a century. Designed by architect Henry Harwood Hewitt in 1927, the four-bedroom, four-bath estate was built for Olympian Clement E. Smoot, who was part of the 1904 gold medal-winning golfing team. A later resident was Artur Rodzinski, famed Polish conductor of the LA Philharmonic.
But Villa Collina became famous as the home of legendary English director James Whale in the 1930s. Whale reportedly lived at the Villa with his longtime partner David Lewis, despite rampant homophobia in Hollywood. According to Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, when agent Phil Berg asked Whale if he “had” to live with Lewis, Whale replied: “I don’t have to. I want to.”

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, 1988’s Night of the Demons is a perfect Halloween party movie; not merely because the plot involves a Halloween party, but it embodies the spirit of the holiday.
Director Kevin Tenney (Witchboard) and writer Joe Augustyn veer between creepy and campy throughout the 90-minute runtime. A playfully spooky atmosphere is immediately established by the Scooby Doo-esque animated credit sequence set to a bombastic synth theme by the director’s brother, Dennis Michael Tenney.
The plot follows a group of rowdy high schoolers to a deadly party at the infamous Hull House. As goth hostess Angela Franklin (Amelia Kinkade) explains, the abandoned abode is possessed rather than haunted: “The spirits living in a house possessed never existed in human form. They’ve only existed in spirit form. They’re pure evil. They’re demons.” A seance awakens the spirits, who start turning the partygoers into savage demons.

He sings, he fixes cars, and he takes punches better than De Niro’s Raging Bull. Elvis Presley excels in one of his few ’60s pictures that shows an interest in being a ‘real movie,’ a remake of a boxing saga with entertaining characters and fine direction from noir specialist Phil Karlson. Plus Charles Bronson, Lola Albright and Joan Blackman in standout roles.

Nicholas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon premiered to boos and catcalls at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and based on everything I know about the Danish director/provocateur (who also directed Drive, Only God Forgives and Bronson), I suspect that’s the reaction he was going for. While it would be inaccurate to claim that critics either love or hate the film (there are a number of “C”-ish reviews in there), it takes a special kind of filmmaker to make a movie that can be deemed “absolutely beautiful” by one critic and “hot garbage” by another. There’s a lot of red and green on the movie’s Metacritic profile, is all I’m saying. In case you’re unfamiliar, here’s the basic premise: aspiring model Jesse (Elle Fanning) moves to Los Angeles (not New York?), where her “youth and vitality are devoured by a group...

Nobody expected those wronged by Edm conglomerate SFX Entertainment to pull any punches just because the company is in the middle of chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring, but the latest developments sure add insult to injury anyways. As a means of collecting a delinquent debt, Dutch promotional company Alda Events has seized commanding shares of SFX Europe, ID&T and Sensation Brazil.
Last month, rumors of ID&T’s relaunch in the Netherlands suggested that SFX would soon relinquish ownership of the company – but not as a result of the same auction process carried out for assets like Beatport, Flavorus and Fame House. However, only close insiders could have imagined that SFX would begrudgingly lose the brand to another one of the companies it had originally sought to acquire.

Armin Van Buuren needs no introduction. As a Grammy nominated artist making records for the last 22 years, the man has been an inseparable part of dance music’s evolution since long before “Edm.” Van Buuren has headlined shows, festivals, and clubs all around the globe, a notable example being last year’s massive Armin Only: Intense tour.
In addition to being crowned DJ Mag’s #1 DJ five times, Armin’s A State Of Trance radio show is widely regarded as the gold standard in dance radio, and just celebrated it’s 733rd episode. Oh, and he also co-founded one of the world’s foremost record labels, Armada Music, alongside Maykel Piron and David Lewis. To say Armin’s had a successful career, is a gross understatement.
Despite being one of the busiest men in dance music, Armin Van Buuren was kind enough to sit and chat with us before his TomorrowWorld 2015 closing performance.

[As you probably already know, starting on Thursday, August 21, Fxx is running the Every Simpsons Ever Marathon, running through all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons," plus "The Simpsons Movie." To aid in your viewing process, Team HitFix is selecting our favorite episodes from each day, plus an episode or two that you can skip and use as a bathroom or nap break.] Day 7 of Fxx's Every Simpsons Ever Marathon goes from "Simpsons Tall Tales" (the end of Season 12) through to "The President Wore Pearls" (the beginning of Season 15). I must admit: The "Simpsons" fans on Team HitFix are beginning to drop like flies. Josh Lasser's fandom carried through the Tomacco episode, but no further. David Lewis wrote a blurb here for "Simpsons Tall Tales," the episode he says ended his active support of the show. Fortunately, Sepinwall and I had a pair of favorites apiece and Katie Hasty also had a preferred episode, so we've got some recommendations for you, plus a couple episodes you can avoid. [And while I only wrote up two episodes I love, there are at least 10 more that I'll be happy to rewatch if I'm around and another 10 more that I'd enjoy having on in the background. Possibly more. This may be the worst period for "The Simpsons" thus far, but I'll always maintain that middling-to-poor "Simpsons" is still more rewatchable than nearly anything else on TV.] Check out our recommendations for Day 7 and chime in with your own favorites... London, Dec. 13: Scientists have come up with the formula for a perfect Christmas dinner.
Psychologists Dr David Lewis and Dr Margaret Yufera-Leitch said careful measuring may be the difference between feeling stuffed or pleasantly satisfied due to the best combo of protein and amino acids, carbo-hydrates and vitamins that are commonly found in Christmas dinner ingredients, the Daily Star reported.
According to Sensory Specific Satiety, the ideal serving must have 150g of white roast turkey meat, 110g of chestnut stuffing and 100g of gravy.
The perfect festive plate, devised with Aldi, must have 155g of steamed sprouts, 170g of carrots and 150g of red cabbage.
It's also high in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty.

Think of the paintings of Lucy Dodd as very, very low-relief earthworks along the lines of Robert Smithson’s or Michael Heizer’s. By making massive material processes and natural phenomena almost one-dimensional, Dodd's work widens the senses, makes the cosmic thickening visible, and uncrumples something fundamental. Although just looking at (or sometimes smelling) her large begrimed art is exhilarating enough, I wanted to run my tongue on a couple of the paintings that the David Lewis Gallery checklist says contain leaf extract, wild walnut, yew berries, liquid smoke, and flower essence. Other works include nettles, black lichen, saliva, iron oxide, charcoal, and dog urine. Some have fermenting smells; one seems to be darkening before our eyes. In this way, Dodd's paintings become two-dimensional animals with inbuilt chemistries, going through secret artistic caramelizations and painterly photosynthesis, converting liquids and semisolids into bliss. Mircea Eliade defined shamanism as "techniques of ecstasy.

World Bank study recommends 51 films using development as a plot device - sometimes at expense of accuracy and complexity
International development is just about at the bottom of the list of things that the average westerner thinks about each day. News organisations are closing their foreign bureaus. One of the big Us television networks turned down more money for global health reporting after a series, entirely funded by grants, led to a dip in viewers. In other words ratings were so bad that the network turned down millions of dollars. It is that tough.
Aside from advocacy efforts like (the much-criticised) Kony 2012 and Oxfam advertisements, how do people learn about the world around them? The answer could be Hollywood. Reporting on Africa does not get much attention in the Us, but a film staring Leonardo DiCaprio about Sierra Leone does.

Last week, Fox News reported on a New York State man who was ordered to surrender his firearms, in what the state says was a case of mistaken identity. Opponents of gun regulation point to this case as some sort of nightmare scenario, but for the gun owner in question, that nightmare came to an end Monday. After a court declared the state's action an error last Thursday, College librarian David Lewis went to the Amherst Police Department on Monday, and picked up the seven firearms he had surrendered.

Love Actually has been named the best film for couples on Valentine's Day, according to data from LoveFilm.
LoveFilm asked neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis, of Mind Lab International, to analyse the top ten films likely to put viewers in the "mood for love" on February 14.
He said that rom-com Love Actually is the film that is most likely to stimulate specialised neurons in the brain, called mirror neurons, that respond to witnessing the activity of others.
"So if an on-screen couple shares a passionate kiss, the mirror neurons in the viewers' heads will fire as if they were doing the kissing," he said. "They will experience the same powerful and pleasurable emotions that are being depicted on screen."

It was a magical evening at the New York Times Center last night for those lucky enough to be in attendance, for at long last, Jason Reitman brought his “Live Read” Series to NYC. The series began about six months ago when the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Lacma) asked Reitman if he had any ideas for programs. His idea was a simple one: to stage readings of classic screenplays live on stage, one time only for an audience of a few hundred people. As he told the NY Times recently, “I’d done table reads for my own screenplays, and I always thought they were so much fun. [So I thought], ‘Why couldn’t we do these for other classic screenplays and bring them to life?’ You can experience live theater, where you get to see plays produced by different directors and different casts, but there’s really nothing like that for movie scripts.

The 55th San Francisco International Film Festival (site), opening tomorrow and running through May 3, "will seem comfortingly the same" to many in the Bay Area, writes G Allen Johnson in the Chronicle:
[A] lavish opening-night film and party, a rocking closing-night film and, in the two weeks between, 172 more films from 45 countries and tributes to distinguished celebrities... But behind the scenes, it's been the most challenging year in the festival's history. Two executive directors of the San Francisco Film Society have died — Graham Leggat, who lost a battle to cancer in August at 51; and his replacement, independent film maestro Bingham Ray, who had two strokes and died at 57 while attending the Sundance Film Festival in January. He had been on the job only 10 weeks.

But I just believe in Billy Wilder... so, thank you Mr. Wilder." Wilder reportedly called the next day "Fernando? It's God."
So just what exactly was it that inspired these men to expend some of the most valuable seconds of speechifying airtime they'll ever know, to tip their hats to Wilder? And can we bottle it?

Tonight, Jason Reitman will direct a live table-read of Billy Wilder’s classic 1960 film, The Apartment, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art to benefit Film Independent. Last month, Reitman kicked off his series with a celeb-studded performance of The Breakfast Club. Reitman had been announcing tonight’s cast via his Twitter feed — yesterday, he revealed that Natalie Portman will read the Shirley MacLaine role — but the role of C.C. Donovan’s Echo Trailer. Jim Cliffe‘s Donovan’s Echo (2011) movie stars Danny Glover, Bruce Greenwood, Chelah Horsdal, Sonja Bennett, and Natasha Calis. Donovan’s Echo‘s plot synopsis: “Once a brilliant mathematician, Donovan Matheson (Danny Glover) has been an outcast since an accident that killed his wife and daughter three decades ago for which he blames himself. He finally returns home as the tragic event’s 30th anniversary approaches and begins discovering similarities to what had happened to him in the past. Convinced history is repeating itself, Donovan risks everything to save an unsuspecting family from the same tragic fate.”
Great premise but the execution may be a little dubious. It’s strength is the storyline and that it may remind the viewer of Rubicon and Proof because Danny Glover’s character is a mathematician and there is a visible mystery.
Donovan’s Echo also stars David Lewis, Hiro Kanagawa,...
