Additionally, TBS has the sci-fi comedy “Space” from Sony, and TNT has two dramas “The Fall” and “Liar’s Club.” The Hollywood Reporter first reported on the development slate.

Ron Howard and comedy site Funny or Die have teamed up on a pitch for the Motion Picture Television Fund.
The six-minute video, which dropped online on Wednesday, is titled “Ron Howard Digs Up a Very Strange Voicemail His Agent Left Him in 1983.” The clip delves into the development of Howard’s comedy “Splash” following the success of “Night Shift,” which starred Michael Keaton, Henry Winkler and Shelley Long.

Adaptation (Spike Jonze)
It’s almost depressing to rewatch Adaptation in 2016, because it’s a reminder of how strong an actor Nicolas Cage is when he actually invests himself in good projects. It was soon after this that his career went off the rails, but he’s remarkably impressive here, playing the dual roles of Charlie Kaufman and his fictional twin brother, Donald. As much a mind-fuck as any other Kaufman screenplay,...

The widespread panic that reportedly ensued in response to Orson Welles’ Oct. 30, 1938, Mercury Theater radio broadcast of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds would seem to be promising material for a screen comedy. Unfortunately, director/co-screenwriter Jody Lambert’s Brave New Jersey squanders its inspiration. Depicting the reactions of a group of small-town residents for whom the event becomes a life-altering experience, the film wastes several talented performers with its low-key, rambling humor and one-dimensional characters.

Making the headlines in 1938
What would you do if you thought aliens were landing near your home, your neighbours shared your concerns and you had no convenient means of summoning outside help? On the 30th of October, 1938, that's exactly what some Americans went through due to confusion over Orson Welles' radio adaptation of Hg Wells' science fiction classic War Of The Worlds. Brave New Jersey is a new film from director Jody Lambert which explores the reactions of people in a small town on that strangest of nights.
Although it's played as a comedy, Brave New Jersey never mocks its characters or treats them as stupid. I congratulated Jody on the dignity he managed to give them.

Long before Tom Cruise fended off extraterrestrial tripod fighting machines in 2005's War of the Worlds, there was Orson Welles' original radio drama, which was broadcast in 1938 and caused the world to falsely believe there was an impending alien invasion.
Brave New Jersey is about that very night in the small town of Lullaby, and, in this exclusive clip, Pitch Perfect 3 star Anna Camp plays Peg Prickett, a schoolteacher who is ready to stay and fight during an attack from Mars, which does not go over well with her tough-talking fiancé.

The first trailer has landed for Brave New Jersey, the cheekily-titled comedy that finds Arrested Development and Veep star Tony Hale as Clark Hill, one of many who experienced the now-legendary day where Orson Welles’ broadcast War of the Worlds over radio waves in 1938 and started a hysteria of massive proportions. Helmed by first time director Jody Lambert (who penned People Like Us), Brave New Jersey seems to be about the lies we believe, and the fun you might end up having along the way.

"So, what are we supposed to do now?" Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie comedy titled Brave New Jersey, from filmmaker Jody Lambert. The film tells the true story of a small town in New Jersey that freaked out during Orson Welles' legendary 1938 "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast, believing it was real. They decided to make this a comedy, which may work better in the end since playing this serious would be a whole other thing. Brave New Jersey features an ensemble cast including Tony Hale, Heather Burns, Anna Camp, Sam Jaeger, Raymond J. Barry, Dan Bakkedahl, Mel Rodriguez, Grace Kaufman, Matt Oberg, and Erika Alexander. This looks totally goofy but still heartfelt and fun. Enjoy. Welcome to Lullaby, NJ, population 506, the fictional town at the center of Jody Lambert’s delightful comedy Brave New Jersey “where strangers are friends and no one is a stranger.” Home of the Rotolactor, a robotic milking machine, the central New Jersey town is only a few hours from Grover’s Mills, the “epicenter” of the great October 1938 martian invasion chronicled in Orson Welles’ legendary War of the Worlds broadcast. Depicting this evening of misconstrued alien invasion, Lambert’s comedy is far more modest affair than the Tom Cruise film as Lullaby comes together for the biggest night in its history.

It was in and out of theaters in a flash, but People Like Us is a nice little dramedy from an unlikely duo: Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. The pair have brought us some of the biggest of the big-budget Hollywood offerings, incuding films like the Transformers series, Star Trek, Cowboys and Aliens, and TV shows Fringe, Hawaii 5-0, and Alias.
For People Like Us, Kurtman (serving as producer, writer, and director) and Orci (who wrote and produced) bring us a very personal tale, based partly on their real-life experiences. It tells the story of Sam (Pine), who finds his busy life complicated when he returns home after his estranged father dies.

Chicago – The companies behind Alex Kurtzman’s “People Like Us” had no idea what to do with their crowd-pleasing melodrama, arguably releasing it at the worst possible time of the year for a tiny movie to not get swept away by bigger blockbusters. The result was a dud in theaters but should get strong word-of-mouth on the home market, helped amply by a stellar Blu-ray/DVD release.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“People Like Us” is an old-fashioned crowd pleaser. Audiences usually turn their head at big budget, tentpole, sci-fi projects from writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci like Star Trek, Transformers and Cowboys & Aliens. But film buffs get a little more interested when a duo like this decides to tackle a character based family drama like People Like Us, the feature directorial debut from Kurtzman which he wrote with longtime writing partner Orci and first-time writer Jody Lambert. The grounded story is a welcome departure from robots, aliens and explosions and results in a tale that is melodramatic and a bit cheesy at times, but captivating and even a little touching. Chris Pine plays Sam, a somewhat shady businessman (or facilitator as he describes it), who, through the convincing of his concerned girlfriend (Olivia Wilde), gets caught up in the complications of his deceased father's estate which has dictated that he hand over $150,000 to Frankie, a sister he ...

A character-driven drama is not something many would assume to place in writer Alex Kurtzman‘s wheelhouse. Kurtzman and his writing partner, Roberto Orci, usually churn out rather artificial, set piece-driven, basic-minded blockbusters. As fun as many of them are - The Island, Stark Trek and Mission: Impossible III - there’s a lack of humanity in nearly all of them. It’s refreshing, then, that Kurtzman’s foray into directing, the not-so-subtlely titled People Like Us, contains much of the humanity missing in many of his previous works.
When Sam’s (Chris Pine) distant father dies, he discovers the other life and family another life his father abandoned. In debt and at the risk of losing his job, Sam is asked to deliver $100,000 to the sister he never knew, a barmaid and mother named Frankie (Elizabeth Banks). As he starts to get to know his sister, Sam isn’t...

Alex Kurtzman has an imposing list of writing and producing credits, mostly with his partner Roberto Orci, including such commercial hits as the Transformers movies, the reboot of Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible III… but for his directing debut (written with Orci and Jody Lambert) he has chosen an intimate story about a uniquely dysfunctional family, inspired by incidents in his own life. It’s the kind of anti-blockbuster I would love to champion, if it were only better. Chris Pine plays a guy who lives on the edge in his business dealings, and has a loyal girlfriend in Olivia Wilde. Then he learns that his father has died, and grudgingly boards a plane for Los Angeles...

In 1966, Michelangelo Antonioni directed his first English-language film, “Blow-Up,” in which a fashion photographer believes he may have unwittingly captured a murder on film. The film was hailed for its innovative use of cinematography and color composition, techniques Antonioni used to place his audience within his protagonist’s mind, to bring the photographer’s intangible feelings of confusion and uncertainty to the realm of physical depiction. This technical conceit was memorably mirrored – using sound recording rather than visuals – eight years later, in Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation,” then again in Brian de Palma’s “Blow Out,” in 1981. The three films were alike in their genre and premise as well, each a crime thriller centered on a character’s discovery of something hidden within the materials associated with his line of work. Alex Kurtzman’s new film, “People Like Us,” shares the technical prowess of these films, employing supreme sound...

New York — "People Like Us" is that increasingly rare kind of film: an adult drama. The filmmakers seem so nervous about this prospect that they fill the movie with action-film editing and a camera that moves so restlessly through domestic life that you'd think it lost its keys.
At one point, I was sure the dramatic opening of a door was going to reveal a Klingon, not complicated memories of a deceased parent.
That's not a coincidence: "People Like Us" is directed by Alex Kurtzman, who co-wrote the script with Roberto Orci (along with Jody Lambert). Kurtzman and Orci are the same duo that wrote the 2009 "Star Trek" reboot, as well as the blockbusters "Mission: Impossible III" and "Transformers," and the TV series "Alias" and "Fringe."
If, in their knack for suspense, they imbue "People Like Us" with impatience, they also keep it entertaining, rendering a familiar, heart-rending melodrama as...

Alex Kurtzman continued to promote his directing debut, the family melodrama People Like Us, which he co-wrote with longtime collaborator Roberto Orci and Jody Lambert. While People Like Us (the film opens Friday from DreamWorks) featured standout performances from Chris Pine, Elizabeth Banks and Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurtzman’s many genre fans used the opportunity to ask him details about his script for the upcoming Star Trek sequel with Pine returning as Capt. Kirk. “I think audiences are really smart, and I think if they feel like they’re being set up for a sequel with a lot of intentionality, they don’t like it,” Kurtzman told The Hollywood Reporter.

Friday night at the Los Angeles Film Festival, blockbuster screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci finally stepped out from behind the gigantic shadows of directors Michael Bay, J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg to show moviegoers what they could do on their own. Their first low-budget drama, “People Like Us” (more distinctive original title: “Welcome to People”), had its world premiere at the Regal Cinemas downtown at L.A. Live, and the duo seemed both relieved and exhilarated by the moment. “This is the end of a nine-year journey for us,” said Kurtzman, who both co-wrote the script with Orci and Jody Lambert and directed for the first time. “I feel really proud of the work everybody did. Everybody brought 100% of themselves. It’s been the most satisfying thing I’ve ever done creatively and one of the most deeply satisfying personally. It’s very rare that your work and your...

Chris Pine and Elizabeth Banks play brother and sister in "People Like Us," only she doesn't know they're brother and sister. That's at least part of the drama in the new film -- co-written by Jody Lambert and popular screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci ("Star Trek," "Transformers"), and directed by Kurtzman -- which focuses on Sam (Pine), a man who finds out about the half-sister he never knew (Banks) after the death of their father.
The story holds a lot of personal history for Kurtzman: he met his own half-sister and half-brother at age 30.
“[M]eeting my half-sister was a life-changing experience,” he told the New York Times. “It continues to be.”
In honor of Visit Your Relative Day, Disney and DreamWorks have released a new clip from the drama exclusively to HuffPost Entertainment. Above, watch Pine, Banks and newcomer Michael D’Addario enjoy crabs, digital cameras and Bob Dylan.
