André Klotzel

André Klotzel studied cinema at the University of São Paulo in the 1970s. During graduate school, he directed his first short films while simultaneously beginning his professional career in feature films, working as an assistant in various positions (production, editing, photography). After finishing school, Klotzel continued as an assistant director (including two years with Nelson Pereira dos Santos) and worked as a production coordinator for publicity films. He also participated in documentaries and short films. His debut feature as writer and director, "A Marvada Carne," was screened at the Cannes Critics' Week (1985) and won several prizes in Brazil. It was both a critical success and achieved substantial commercial results in Brazil, and was screened in ten other countries. André founded a production company with three colleagues, and from then on, he dedicated his time to producing films within the company, directing short movies and TV films for others, while also developing new individual projects. His next movie, "Capitalismo Selvagem," was made during a crisis in Brazilian cinema and was funded by ZDF (Das Kleine Fernsehspiel) and Fond Sud (France). Klotzel's third feature, "Memórias Póstumas," was a period film adapted from a classic Brazilian novel. He produced, wrote, directed, and edited this project. The movie was featured in Berlin's Panorama and other international festivals, garnering national recognition among critics, winning prizes, and attracting a reasonably large theatrical audience.
