'Teacher of the Year' movie: Smart and funny socially conscious comedy Teacher of the Year manages to pull off one of the more difficult balancing acts in filmmaking: it actually is smart while still being funny. Teacher of the Year is smart about education, both as a vocation and as an industry; and it's both character and dialogue funny, leaning heavily on the free-agent talents of Keegan-Michael Key, half of the comedy duo, Key and Peele. Comedy Central just released this series of standup snippets entitled “First Car Stories,” which features (as the title barely implies) four comedians each telling the stories behind the first cars they ever owned, attempted to own, or owned for several seconds before instantly destroying them. Surely, many of you will find these stories hilariously relatable in all their painful, awkward, broke glory. I live in New York and don’t own a car, so I don’t even have to relate, I just get to watch these and Laugh At You All!!!! Ahahahahahaha (rat carring a finger full of garbage just ran across my feet). Take it away, four amusingly painful stories: 1. An impressive total of 10.1 million people watched Zooey Deschanel’s New Girl premiere last night. I was one of them. And an extraordinarily large number of people enjoyed the show. I was not one of them.
Admittedly, I was predisposed to not liking it. Though I enjoyed blonde Deschanel in Elf, I have disliked mostly everything brunette Deschanel has done in recent years. That is, besides The Happening, because it’s impossible to dislike a movie that awesomely awful. So while my love for The Happening led me to laugh at the sight of Deschanel falling over a plant in...

Vork was bound to get his own show. Well, by that I mean the web needed more of the cerebral deadpan comedy of The Guild star Jeff Lewis. Thankfully, Lewis had made a few friends who know a thing or two about shooting web series after four seasons on one of the most popular scripted comedies online. Teaming up with Guild director Sean Becker, Lewis birthed a series of sharp five-minute sketches that would feature a number of his comedy pals like Felicia Day, Alex Albrecht, Tom Konkle, Vince Caso, Robin Thorsen and Jamie Kaler. The Jeff Lewis 5-minute Comedy Hour debuted back in October of last year with Guild-cast-heavy “Tag” kicking off the season. To date, it’s still the most popular in terms of views, netting just under 80,000 so far on YouTube. Throughout the season, 5-minute would push the comedy lines into mature corners, often slapping an Nsfw...

Jamie Kaler's show, the underrated TBS sitcom 'My Boys,' was canceled, but luckily, he has a stand-up comedy career to fall back on. Now Kaler is back on stage with a vengeance. Do you think he blames his audiences for 'My Boys' low ratings?
At a recent show at the Columbus Funny Bone, Kaler literally caused a woman to laugh so hard she began choking (see video below). It was so severe, the comedian noticed her from stage and says, "No, she's not joking." That prompted others to give the choking victim the Heimlich maneuver. Nothing popped out of her throat and everyone realized she was only laughing. Very hard.

This might be the closest thing to a spin-off of the long running and inarguably popular comedy web series The Guild. Aside from stars Felicia Day and Sandeep Parikh, we haven't seen too much of the rest of the cast popping up in other web series, so this one caught our eye. The Guild director Sean Becker has teamed up with comedian Jeff Lewis (aka Vork on The Guild) for a new web series, The Jeff Lewis 5-Minute Comedy Hour. Lewis stars along with a number of guest stars in distinct comedy sketch for each episode, with only Lewis being the common thread. Guest stars in the 10-episode first season: Felicia Day (The Guild) Vince Caso (The Guild) Tara Caso (The Guild) Brett Sheridan (The Guild) Jamie Kaler (My Boys) Kyle Bornheimer (Worst Week) Tom Konkle (Safety Geeks Svi) Kim Evey (Gorgeous Tiny Chicken Machine Show) Related News:Felicia Day...

Well, send me straight to Crowley’s, PopWatchers, because I need a drink. Why? Because not only am I lamenting my decision to tape the VMAs over the My Boys season finale Sunday (curse you, ever-addictive time-slot competitor Mad Men!), but now my grief has been amplified upon finding out it was a series finale I missed. Yep, TBS has decided to cancel its charming laugher My Boys.
Like a baseball metaphor from Pj (Jordana Spiro), however, we saw it coming. TBS buried My Boys by airing it in the competitive 10 p.m. Sunday slot. It’s a shame, especially...

No season five for Pj and the guys. As expected, TBS has cancelled My Boys after four seasons on the air.
My Boys revolves around Chicago sports writer Pj Franklin (Jordana Spiro) and her close group of male friends. Castmembers include Jamie Kaler, Jim Gaffigan, Kellee Stewart, Kyle Howard, Michael Bunin, and Reid Scott.
It's been suspected for awhile that TBS wasn't going to bring the show back for a fifth season but the cable channel wouldn't confirm it. Speculation was that TBS execs feared that, by admitting the show was ending without a true series finale, not as many viewers would tune in. As it is, an average of only 784,000 people tuned in to see the last two installments.
That decision ultimately cost Spiro and Howard jobs on new NBC shows, Love Bites and Perfect Couples. They were...

Rachael Harris is best known for her dry, quick-witted delivery in roles on shows like "Notes from the Underbelly" and last year's comedy blockbuster "The Hangover," where she played the nagging wife of Ed Helms' character Stu Price, who would deliver such chestnuts as "suck my" you-know-what.
Harris has recently gotten a chance to play nice in the role of mom Susan Heffley in "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and now a recurring role on TBS comedy "My Boys," where she plays Marcia, a love interest for Jamie Kaler's character Mike. The attitude adjustment on her latest roles isn't lost on Harris. "I got to be nice on the show so that's a really good thing," Harris said, laughing.
"It takes a special kind of lady to appreciate Mike," said Harris, who will appear on the upcoming final three episodes of "My Boys." "He's eccentric and a goofball.

Tonight, TBS kicks off the fourth season of the My Boys sitcom. Will it be back for a fifth season? Some of the actors expect it be cancelled but TBS doesn't agree -- not yet anyway.
My Boys revolves around sportswriter Jane "Pj" Franklin (Jordana Spiro) who has several close friends that are mostly guys. They include her brother Andy (Jim Gaffigan), competing sportswriter Bobby (Kyle Howard), DJ Brendan Dorff (Reid Scott), commitment-challenged Mike (Jamie Kaler), socially inept Kenny (Michael Bunin), and Stephanie Layne (Kellee Stewart), a fellow female writer.
The show began in November 2006. It was successful enough to be renewed for seasons two, three, and four but TBS only ordered nine installments each time. Anticipating a cancellation this time around, several in the cast have found other work, or at least they've tried to.

Four years ago, TV audiences were introduced to Betsy Thomas’ My Boys, a new TBS sitcom set in Chicago about a female sportswriter and her merry band of brewski-loving (male) best pals. And, even back then, we knew we were watching something different. The series, filled with its awkward silences and an endless supply of baseball metaphors, was certainly off-beat — so much so that it felt off-putting to some reviewers, like EW’s former TV critic Gillian Flynn, who placed the show on her Worst of TV list back in 2006. Fast-forward two years later, and Flynn was apologizing to the...

Being "one of the guys" can be hard work -- all that ping-pong playing, beer drinking, Espn watching ... it's tiring even just typing that.
But Jordana Spiro easily traverses Guy Land in her fourth season as the star of TBS' comedy, 'My Boys.' Her character, sportswriter Pj, goes toe to toe (and beer for beer) with boyfriend Bobby (Kyle Howard) and a cadre of male friends (Michael Bunin, Jamie Kaler, Reid Scott). For some female companionship, she's got Bff Stephanie -- who recently started dating one of those guys, Kenny (Bunin).
Spiro talked to TV Squad recently about the changes to the group in season 4 (premieres Sun., July 25 at 10Pm Et), getting her ping-pong on, the sport she obsessed over this year and Conan O'Brien's move to TBS.

Chicago – The writing on “My Boys” can still be overly self-aware of its perceived cleverness but the ensemble has developed to such an extent that they’ve reached level of talent that can overcome the occasional weak punchline or false character moment. These talented actors have finally gelled into the fine-tuned comedy ensemble that they always threatened to be and you couldn’t ask for better drinking buddies on a Sunday night this summer.
Television Rating: 3.5/5.0
Part of the problem with the first few seasons of “My Boys” was that it wasn’t a true ensemble show. It felt like Jordana Spiro’s vehicle and the rest of the cast were merely playing off her lead. If you just saw the first two episodes of the fourth season, you’d have no idea that this was “her show.” Everyone is finally on the same level, turning the series into a...

When we last left "My Boys," Pj's (Jordana Spiro) brother Andy (Jim Gaffigan, who left the show to focus on his stand-up comedy) took a job in China, leaving Pj and the gang with an empty spot in their weekly poker game, which they seek to fill in the premiere episode, "Addition by Subtraction."
What ensues is a round of auditions for the spot, including the fellow in the above clip who orders Pj to make him some tea. The group finally does fill the poker table spot -- but we won't spoil it for you.
In "Gourmets and Confused," the second of the back-to-back Season 4 premiere episodes, a "grown-up night" takes a very grown-up turn when Mike (Jamie Kaler) and Brendan (Reid Scott) make some special brownies that are inadvertently consumed by the others. Let's just say Pj and friend Stephanie (Kellee Stewart) are doing cheers by episode's end.

What was My Boys star Jamie Kaler's first TV role? A guy "way too old to be hitting it" on Saved by the Bell: The New Class. Kaler and co-star Michael Bunin stopped by TVGuide.com during their current comedy tour to tell us more about their humble beginnings — which may have included porn — and how a table read during the first season led to a romance in Season 4, which premieres Sunday at 10/9c on TBS.

Star Jamie Kaler, who plays goofball Mike Callahan, stopped by the TV Squad offices to talk to us about what's coming up on the show and the comedy tour he and castmate Mike Bunin (Kenny) are embarking on across the country (see the schedule at Kaler's site). Plus, we chatted about the games they play on set, why none of us excel at poker and why editor Patricia Chui sucks at bowling.
Most importantly, Kaler reenacted our absolute favorite line from 'My Boys' (I'm making it my ringtone!).
We're also giving away a copy of 'My Boys' seasons 2 and 3 on DVD (in stores now). For the chance to win,...

A year ago, we began to notice a surge in live streaming web series, a rush that came as the technology and platforms finally caught up to the growing demand from creators for direct interaction with their audiences. Platforms like Ustream, Stickam and Livestream made “going live” even simpler than uploading a video to YouTube. And for creators who sought out a more professional setup than static webcams, new inexpensive tools like the NewTek Tricaster made multi-camera switching suddenly within reach. TheStream.tv and maniaTV were some of the first online networks of live shows, using custom-built studio space to run their multi-camera broadcasts and lively chat rooms. The trend saw a noticeable uptick in 2009, so much so that we dedicated a whole night to exploring the lure of live streaming web shows at the Going Live panel at the October Web TV Meetup. Then came news this spring that...

Zap2it hit the set of TBS' "My Boys" this week and was pleasantly surprised to witness the presence of the hilarious Rachael Harris ("The Hangover," "Reno 911," "Notes from the Underbelly").
Harris will make her "My Boys" debut towards the end of the fourth season which premieres Sunday, July 25.
She'll be playing Mike's (Jamie Kaler) love interest, Marcia, who meets him at Andy's (Jim Gaffigan) suburban home.
Gaffigan has opted to exit "My Boys" and concentrate on his stand up career this year. His character will be written out with a move overseas, which of course leaves the door open for Mike to masquerade as a grown man who owns his own four-bedroom pad.
But apparently this Marcia chick digs that kind of trickery, because she seems to be sticking around.
We like Harris. So we're cool with that.

TBS has ordered a fourth season of the comedy series "My Boys." The new season will feature nine new episodes and will launch in 2010.
"My Boys has consistently grown its audience of young adults through a combination of funny, smartly written scripts, high-quality production and an enormously talented cast," said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TBS, TNT and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). "We look forward to working with the cast and crew on another successful season."
The show focuses on Pj Franklin, played by Jordana Spiro, who is a sport column writer for a major Chicago newspaper. At night, she hangs out with friends, playing poker or having drinks at the group's favorite bar, Crowley's.
The show also stars Kyle Howard, Reid Scott, Michael Bunin, Jamie Kaler and Kellee Stewart.

More 'Boys' in TBS lineup next season
TBS is looking to bring its comedy series My Boys, which had its season finale Monday night, back for a second season.
The cable network confirmed Monday that it is in talks for another season of the series from Sony Pictures Television, Pariah and Two Out Rally Prods. SPT declined comment.
My Boys debuted Nov. 28 as TBS' first original scripted comedy. In December, the network ordered nine additional episodes of the show, bringing the total number to 22. Those episodes debuted July 30, with back-to-back installments averaging 1.6 million total viewers, off only slightly from November's back-to-back series premiere (1.7 million) but up 4% in the adults 18-34 demo.
My Boys, starring Jordana Spiro as a twentysomething sportswriter who spends a lot of time with her male friends, is executive produced by writer-creator Betsy Thomas, Jamie Tarses and Gavin Polone. Jim Gaffigan, Kyle Howard, Reid Scott, Michael Bunin, Jamie Kaler and Kellee Stewart round out the cast.
