Herbert Jefferson Jr. is involved with several community activities including, the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program, IAVA Supporter, Operation Stand Down (Service Provider), The USO, California Paralyzed Veterans Association, The American Red Cross (Disaster Action Team/Search and Rescue), Los Angeles Fire Department Community Emergency Response Team (LAFD/CERT), Special Olympics (Ambassador, Coach, Fundraiser), Tuskegee Airmen Inc., CAF Redtail Squadron Ambassador, and Our Shades of Blue for youth S.T.E.M. Ambassador.

Graduated with honors from New York's American Academy of Dramatic Arts (1969). His career began on the New York stage. He has appeared in Theater productions On-Broadway, Off-Broadway, Regionally, and Internationally. This includes performing in two original plays, "The Great White Hope", and "No Place To Be Somebody" that went on to win the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and one, the original production of David Rabe's "Streamers" directed by Mike Nichols, that won "Best New American Play of The Year" by The New York Drama Critics Circle in 1976.

He has one child, a daughter, Hollywood Red Carpet and celebrity Fashion Stylist Rebecca Mamie Jefferson - Gross, one Granddaughter, Berkeley Brynn Gross, her first child, born 20 November 2014, and one Grandson, Lennon Lorin Gross, born 10 July 2018.

Shares a 1996 "Screen Actors Guild Award" win for Outstanding Performance by a Cast for "Apollo 13".
