Somebody seems to have a lot of faith in director James Bamford. After years of working as a stuntman and directing episodes of mostly DC Comics-related TV shows, Hard Home is his fourth film to see release this year. The fact that the previous three, Air Force One Down, Jade, and Shadow Land left a lot to be desired is, of course, another matter.
Here he’s working from a script by Mark Shea Price, whose previous credits consist of shorts such as The Mayans Were Right and Raised by Fish. It opens with Mary jogging through the woods and attracting the attention of a Polaroid-wielding psycho when she stops to check out an old cemetery.
He shrugs off being maced, but just as he’s about to kill her,...

"Make him pay." Paramount Movies / Republic Pictures have revealed the official trailer for a very cheesy revenge thriller called Hard Home, arriving to watch in June this summer. This is skipping theaters and heading straight to VOD to catch at home if anyone cares. A mother who is deeply saddened by a loss lures her daughter’s killer into her smart home in order to take revenge, and gets involved in a distorted cat-and-mouse game where life and death are at stake. Simone Kessell stars in this action-packed revenge-thriller, another one involving one of these "high-tech homes" that has tons of contraptions. In addition to Kessell, this also stars Joseph Millson, Rachel Adedeji, Daphne Cheung, Rosie Day, and Andrew Howard. Should be no surprise that this looks terrible - not even worth a rental. // Continue Reading ›...

With the beginning of Phase 4 and the Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in 2021, Marvel Studios decided to expand the franchise’s canon with Disney+ streaming shows that would be directly connected with the movies, unlike all the previous shows that aired on ABC and Netflix. The first Disney+ MCU series was ‘WandaVision’, and since its premiere, we have watched eight live-action series and one animated series.
Expanding the franchise through Disney+ content allowed the studio to develop spin-offs for characters that wouldn’t happen if the franchise only stuck to the movies. Some of the spin-offs we will watch eventually are ‘Agatha: Darkhold Diaries,’ ‘Ironheart,’ ‘Wonder Man,’ ‘Vision Quest,’ and ‘Echo.’ Echo is a spin-off to 2021’s ‘Hawkeye’ series, in which Alaqua Cox debuted as Maya Lopez, also known as Echo.
The ‘Echo’ series is rumored to be shorter than initially announced.

Patrick Wilson is looking back at Watchmen and praising director Zack Snyder for being “ahead of the curve,” which he says ultimately led the way for films like The Avengers.
“Watchmen is the only movie of mine that I have watched front to back since a premiere — that movie is awesome,” Wilson said in an interview with ReelBlend.
Wilson joked that he wanted to share the film with his son “to fast forward through the scene with Malin Akerman in the ship.”
“I just wanted to look at it as an older guy, as a filmmaker. I knew Zack was ahead of the curve,” he added. “It’s weird to say that audiences weren’t ready for it. But you need a movie like that. You need movies to go so dark that then Avengers can go so light. I do believe in that.”

Erik Hodge, who leads the Los Angeles office of New York-based The Raine Group, thinks things are a bit risky in Hollywood at the moment.
“Bob Iger said this — and it’s always a good idea to say what he says — there’s a lot of anxiety,” Hodge said on Wednesday’s TheGrill panel “Merger Mania: Behind the Mega Deals in Media & Entertainment. And that’s just a fact, we (are in) a global situation that’s unsettling. The stock market is down; media companies are down 40 and more.”
However, Hodge — as well as others featured on the panel moderated by Creative Media Chairman Peter Csathy — said Hollywood is in a period of transition, not a free falI, and that includes mergers and acquisitions.

From The Sopranos to Boardwalk Empire, when it comes to noir HBO knows how to raise the stakes. Case in point: rebooting Perry Mason with a 21st century lens, but staging the iconic character against the Great Depression in Los Angeles. It’s a complete dusting off and polishing up of the Erle Stanley Gardner-created IP.
In the series created by Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones, we see Mason’s rise — as sublimely portrayed by The Americans‘ Matthew Rhys — from gumshoe P.I. to burgeoning attorney. He squares off with corrupt city officials and a demagogue Christian Evangelist, Sister Alice McKeegan (played by Emmy winner Tatiana Maslany), as he tries to learn who brutally snatched and murdered Charlie Dodson.
In “Chapter 3,” which Fitzgerald and Jones co-wrote, wily district attorney Maynard Barnes (Stephen Root) goes public with a shocking new development on the case in order to get an advantage over Mason’s attorney-mentor E.

Free’s short film won the Oscar on Sunday night
Travon Free, the director of this year’s Oscar winner for Best Live Action Short “Two Distant Strangers,” has signed a first look producing deal with Endeavor Content.
Free directed “Two Distant Strangers” along with Martin Desmond Roe, and the film that was acquired by Netflix tells the story of a Black man trying to get home to his dog who is stopped by police and killed, only to find himself caught in a “Groundhog Day”-style infinite time loop in which he relives the morning and gets killed by the same police officer over and over again no matter what he does differently. The film starred Joey Bada$$, Zaria and Andrew Howard.

Short films rarely get the attention they deserve throughout the year, but the 15 that get nominated for Oscars across three categories are the exception to the rule. Representing an entire art form is a lot to ask any one film, but luckily this year’s batch of nominees is well positioned to do the short form justice. This year’s five Best Live-Action Short Film contenders all follow traditional narrative structures, making each humanitarian tale easily accessible to those less familiar with short form.
The shorts category often highlights certain sociopolitical issues, and this year is no different. From racist police brutality to disability to the everyday struggles of a Palestinian family, the five nominees hold a mirror up to the world’s most egregious injustices. While each filmmaker takes a different tact, whether uncomfortable satire to understated drama, all five films address their respective issues with finesse. Here’s...

Law and order, and the lack thereof, were impossible to ignore amid last year’s “defund the police” protests, and the same tensions are reflected in the Oscar-nominated live-action shorts lineup. Some of the entries predate the George Floyd killing, while another was shot in direct reaction to that tragedy last summer; two more were made abroad, on opposite sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, touching on themes that transcend borders. It’s not unusual for finalists in this category to come pushing a political agenda, and yet, this crop doesn’t feel like agitprop, but sincere, activist storytelling, well worth seeking out in theaters or on demand, as ShortsTV has once again made possible.
In “The Present,” which won top honors at the SXSW Film Festival, Palestinian Yusef (Saleh Bakri) and his daughter Yasmine (Mariam Kanj) must cross an armed checkpoint in order to fetch a refrigerator for his wife’s anniversary.

Exclusive: After recurring on the first season of Perry Mason. Eric Lange and Justin Kirk have been promoted to series regulars for season 2 of the HBO series.
Lange’s Detective Holcomb, who appeared in seven of Season 1’s eight episodes, is a commanding force as a homicide detective within the LAPD, a master of intimidation with a knack for getting his way without regard for proper procedure.
Kirk’s Hamilton Berger, seen in three episodes of Season 1, is a famous nemesis to Perry Mason. Though not yet the district attorney, Berger, a rising lawyer in the Da’s office, finds himself surprisingly entangled in Mason’s big case and an unlikely friend to the man who will become his greatest foe.
Set in 1931 Los Angeles, based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, the reboot of the long-running CBS drama follows the origins of American Fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer,...

Bvlgari and Tribeca Studios have recruited Oscar-nominee Cynthia Erivo to host its Female Trailblazers Series focused on highlighting resilient and extraordinary women through short films.
On Monday, the singer-actress will host virtual panels for two films, Lot 448 and Ezinma. The series, which starts at 6 p.m. Et, will kick off with Bella Monticelli’s Lot 448. Monticelli’s short work follows an art activist as she attempts to stop a rare artifact from falling into corrupt hands.
Ezinma, from Alison Chernick, follows a violinist who is revolutionizing the world of classical music. The titular character takes her rigorous classical training and transforms it into a fresh, radical and intersectional genre of her own, gaining the recognition of notable artists including Beyoncé.
The two films are among the six titles produced across Bvlgari’s three-year partnership with Tribeca Studios and the final to premiere in association with Tribeca Film Festival. The complete...

Exclusive: The CW has picked up an additional 13 episodes of fantasy-adventure series The Outpost ahead of the launch of its third season.

Christopher Nolan always intended Tenet to be a massive moviegoing experience. Shot primarily on 65Mm IMAX cameras, and acting as our critic Rosie Fletcher described as “Nolan does Bond [and then] does Doctor Who,” Tenet would be a big deal in any given year.
But in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, it’s become the only major blockbuster released this summer, and an epic intended to save cinema. The scale and stakes of the thing are enormous, but they may not surprise actor Andrew Howard, who in addition to playing the sinister Det. Ennis on HBO’s Perry Mason also has a smaller role in Tenet.
When our culture editor Tony Sokol spoke with Howard last week to discuss Perry Mason the subject of Tenet and Howard’s unique Christopher Nolan experience came up. While describing his role as a “’cameo” in the film, Howard told us he considered the project...

The following contains spoilers for Perry Mason season 1.
Perry Mason ended its introductory season with a hung jury for the accused, and never got the chance to put the main culprit on the stand. And, boy did defense attorney Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys) want that. He fantasized about the confrontation, roleplaying it in front of an audience of legal authorities who all disagreed with his opinion. Mason wasn’t only robbed of a pure victory in the case, his true prey was stolen.
Detective Ennis was sentenced to death by his own partner, and with him went one of the most interesting characters on the series. This guy could have evolved into one of the great HBO villains, a bad cop who kept getting worse. The ends only justified the means but he wasn’t born mean. Andrew Howard brought more than moral ambiguity to the role. He captured the...

It was when prosecutor Hamilton Burger screamed, “No one confesses on the stand!” that I suspected things weren’t going to end well for me and this version of Perry Mason.

Perry Mason Episode 8
“No one confesses on the stand,” Hamilton Burger (Justin Kirk) advises the title character on Perry Mason‘s season 1 finale, “Chapter Eight.” And it’s a shame. Not only because this is the very thing which made the iconic TV series character legendary, but because Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys) is doing so well with it in rehearsal. At least that’s what he tells himself and everyone else around him before clearing out the room to fit his ego.
The battle is over whether Mason should put Detective Ennis (Andrew Howard) on the stand, a hostile witness to say the least. Della Street (Juliet Rylance) believes Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) should be allowed to speak for herself after having been dragged through the mud by every man close enough to tug at her. Mason sees this as a crusade for Della,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains details from tonight’s season 1 finale episode of HBO’s Perry Mason.
It’s a mistrial and the court goes wild.
As rich and thrilling as this Great Depression noir HBO series was with sublime acting all around — especially Matthew Rhys’ turn as the P.I.-turned-attorney who overcompensates for his demons and mediocrity with his “eureka!” discoverings — the Perry Mason case of who killed baby Charlie Dodson was rather long-winded.
Sure, we weren’t fully convinced that Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) was completely innocent.
However, through various Byzantine rabbit holes explored by Mason, his gal Friday Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and his sidekick investigator Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham), our title character discovered that the Radiant Assembly of God was to blame for the kidnapping of Charlie, with Detective Ennis (Andrew Howard) orchestrating all the murders, down to taking the church’s Elder Seidel (Taylor Nichols) out.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Perry Mason” Season 1, Episode 8, “Chapter 8,” including the ending.]
I hate the “Perry Mason” moment. Growing up the son of a small town defense attorney, nothing would grind my father’s gears like seeing a TV lawyer badger their witness into an admission of guilt, or suddenly introduce new evidence that they themselves uncovered. The former rarely happens, and the latter is a convenient fallacy cooked up by efficiency-minded screenwriters — lawyers aren’t private investigators. Except, of course, if you’re Perry Mason.
So when HBO’s beautiful reboot set up a plot where Matthew Rhys’ seasoned P.I. would also don the mantle of a respectable attorney, it had me worried that this “Perry Mason” would repeat the same melodramatic “moments” made infamous by the ’50s original. Those were fine back then, when TV was built on disposable drama, but today’s audiences demand better. The era of Prestige TV...

(Spoilers ahead for HBO’s reboot of “Perry Mason” through the July 26 episode)
There’s so much that just doesn’t add up — at least not yet! — about the mystery of who killed Charlie Dodson on “Perry Mason.” The HBO series is more about showing us how the characters are responding emotionally to the situation than it is about trying to enthrall you in its central mystery. The mystery is important, yes, but not as important as the character work.
That said, there’s a certain plot thread that hasn’t fit neatly into the narrative just yet in a thematic way: that of Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany) and her church.
This particular aspect of “Perry Mason” reminded me of a bit from the movie “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.” In that film the characters discuss a series of trashy pulp detective novels, which all feature a uniform plot structure that...

The first half of HBO’s Perry Mason was a bit of a tease.
Though everyone with even a passing familiarity with American television knows that Perry Mason is a devoted, capable lawyer, HBO’s version of the show introduced him as something else entirely. Through four full episodes of TV, Matthew Rhys’s legal hero was more of a grimy private investigator.
To be fair, this depiction of Perry Mason worked quite well within the HBO series’ gritty ‘20s aesthetic. But any show featuring Perry Mason was going to have to head to a courtroom eventually. And eventually Perry Mason did. The back half of Perry Mason’s eight episode first season put the titular star in the legal world where he belongs. And that’s presumably where he’ll stay for season 2.
Below is an episode guide to better track Perry’s evolution.

Perry Mason Episode 6
Perry Mason, “Chapter Six,” delivers the title character’s courtroom debut. For a man who is going to embody an icon of courtroom drama, Perry Mason is off to a much less than auspicious start. Matthew Rhys coughs, stammers, makes self-effacing jokes as he stumbles into objectionable oratory and forgets to bring water to court before he even makes it through the first paragraph of his opening statement.
His worthy opponent, District Attorney Maynard Barnes (Stephen Root), is just finishing his two-hour opening statement as the episode opens, and we can tell it went flawlessly. He is a veteran attorney and an effective showman, who is so fully prepared he even brought an extra glass for Mason. The defense attorney goes as long as he can before he takes that glass, and immediately tries to douse the prosecution’s fiery salvos.

This week on “Perry Mason,” LAPD Officer Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) reached a turning point. After spending the previous five episodes carefully navigating his fraught situation and wrestling with his conscience, it looks like he’s decided to take a stand — after taking the stand.
As you saw, the trial of Emily Dodson (Gayle Rankin) for the murder of her baby son Charlie continued this week, and Drake had to take the witness stand and deliver false testimony to help keep Detective Ennis (Andrew Howard) out of the spotlight. Drake did what he was supposed to do, and Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys) came very close to revealing the truth: that Drake had secretly given him evidence that there was a fourth man involved in the kidnapping of baby Charlie.

Perry Mason, a property practically synonymous with noir-driven detective dramas, has awaken from its dormancy, as evidenced by the arrival of HBO’s long-developing reboot series.
Matthew Rhys, the Emmy-winning former co-star of FX’s The Americans, stars as the eponymous protagonist in this 8-episode whodunnit series, which puts author Erle Stanley Gardner’s embattled lawyer through HBO’s peak television lens, producing a stylish small-screen offering rife with class-contrasting aesthetics of the Great Depression. It all comes together to frame the case of a child kidnapping that proves to be dangerously connected to a diverse array of institutional corruption.

The first cleanup is actually done by Della Street (Juliet Rylance). “Chapter Four” ended with the suicide of E.B. Jonathan, esteemed but broken attorney at law. That act began almost imperceptibly at the start of the episode, as John Lithgow, who plays E.B., masterfully allowed his wounds to bleed out long before he turned on the oven, blew out the burners, and said a long goodnight to the hummingbirds. Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys) sits on the threshold of ethics and has no problem turning the suicide into something more insurance friendly. He knows the difference between what’s legal and what’s right.

(This article contains spoilers for HBO’s “Perry Mason” through the episode that aired July 5)
Being a noir thriller, “Perry Mason” on HBO tells the story not just of a murder mystery — but of a conspiracy as well. Having seen only three of the eight episodes thus far, we still know very little about the big picture. But we finally started to get a glimpse behind the curtain this week, and Perry and co. started to dig into the story of one George Gannon.
Now, George is very dead, and his face is basically destroyed, so you’ll be forgiven for not realizing this dead body was once a live human being who we met already. But we’ll come back to that in a momen.
So right now George is pretty much all anybody on the show wants to talk about, and Perry Mason himself (Matthew Rhys) spends the...
