In a year in which representation for minorities on television has been brought to the forefront of Hollywood’s agenda, the Emmy Awards are being called out for their lack of nominations given to Latinx actors and shows.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus called the lack of nominations “a demoralizing disappointment for the U.S.’s largest minority group” in a tweet Tuesday, urging Hollywood to “acknowledge and address the erasure of Latinx actors.”
The caucus consists of 38 members that advocate for issues important to the Latinx community via the legislative process in Congress. In its tweet, the group incorrectly said that no Latinx actors were nominated, when in fact Alexis Bledel — nominated for her guest role on “The Handmaids Tale” — identifies as Latinx.
Reps for the Television Academy did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

Calls are ongoing for the reopening of a toll-free hotline for detained immigrants that was shut down after it was featured in a episode of Orange Is The New Black.
The California-based Freedom for Immigrants says the hotline was shut down on August 7, about two weeks after the July 26 premiere of the final season of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black. It had been featured in the fifth episode of the final season, in which Maritza, played by Diane Guerrero, who has been detained by Ice, discovers a toll-free hotline she can call to get a free lawyer. As she joyfully tells Gloria about the hotline, Gloria quickly warns her, “You have to be careful, though. Apparently if they figure out that you’re using the hotline, Big Brother shuts it down.”
And lo and behold, that’s what happened, in real-life.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the series finale of Orange Is the New Black!
Real-life issues make their way into Orange Is the New Black season seven, and the storylines hit home for many people. One of the most prominent ones is immigration. More than one character we've known for seasons and seasons is faced with deportation. Maritza Ramos (Diane Guerrero), who did not appear in season six, became a main player in the first few episodes of the final season, and her story doesn't end in smiles.
Since she wasn't in the previous season, we don't see exactly when she is released from prison. But we do see that she's enjoying the nightlife, even though her probation is supposed to stop her from doing that. Maritza meets an NBA player based in Los Angeles who wants to bring her there. She doesn't tell him about her past and how she can't leave the state,...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for the series finale of Orange Is the New Black.
Immigration is a heavy topic tackled in the latest season of Orange is the New Black. One of its original characters, Blanca Flores (Laura Gómez), in particular, finds herself at the center of the deportation scandal. All season long, we watch Blanca's time in the Us quickly drift away like sand in an hourglass. Her green card expires, her freedom is at risk, and the love of her life disappears into Ice custody. Let's just say, Blanca's story gives us all the feels.
We start by seeing Blanca in an Ice detention center alongside Maritza (Diane Guerrero). Confusing, because last season we see her walk free, kicking rocks to the Litchfield Penitentiary. Orange Is the New Black was technically the second of Netflix’s original series to debut, arriving five months after House of Cards in 2013. But where Cards was exactly the kind of antihero drama that had been made for years on cable TV (Netflix in fact won a bidding war with HBO for it), Orange felt like something new in almost every way. As the women’s prison drama enters its seventh and final season this week, it feels right to celebrate it as the first series explicitly designed for the streaming era,...

Over the years, Orange Is the New Black's Blanca Flores (played by Laura Gómez) has become a fan favorite. In season one, Blanca is deemed crazy because she's constantly in a particular bathroom stall talking to "Diablo" ("Devil" in Spanish). Turns out it's because she has a hidden cell phone and Diablo is actually her boyfriend's nickname. She's later forced into psych after flipping out when her contraband cell phone is stolen, but by season four, it's clear she's done messing around. Her peaceful protest of the COs and Piscatella's power turns violent and results in Poussey's death. In season five, she plays a pivotal part in the riot at Litchfield, is taken captive by Piscatella, and has to witness the torture of Red. All of this is to say that Blanca has been going through...

Orange Is the New Black is full of quietly fascinating characters, but Blanca might take the cake. While she first appears as crazy, we learn in season one that she's just pretending to talk to herself because it means people don't realize she's talking to her boyfriend on her hidden cell phone. Blanca is a smart cookie, and we see even more of that in season five. Since Blanca has such an extreme look, I recently started wondering what actress Laura Gómez looks like in real life. The answer? Very different than her onscreen persona.

When it comes to rewarding the best comedic cast on television, the SAG Awards often simply go with the biggest cast. Recent winners like “Orange is the New Black” (2014-2016), “Glee” (2009), “Desperate Housewives” (2004-2005) and “Ally McBeal” (1998) all prevailed thanks in part to having the most cast members on the voting ballot. Interestingly enough, all four of these were also hour-long dramedies, which suggests SAG voters are more apt to give the prize to large casts when they’re also in large productions.
What does this statistic mean in terms of predicting the 2018 SAG Awards? “Orange is the New Black” once again boasts the biggest comedy cast with a record-setting 45 men and women nominated for the Netflix prison series. That’s up from 37 cast members in 2016, 34 in 2015, and 40 in 2014. Of this year’s other nominated ensembles, Netflix’s “Glow” consists of 18 cast members, followed by HBO’s “Veep” at 15, ABC...

Netflix has unveiled new photos from the fourth season of “Orange is the New Black,” revealing new characters, plot points and a lot more unanswered questions. Something is going on between Piper (Taylor Schilling) and Bianca (Laura Gomez), while Sophia (Laverne Cox) still remains in solitary after she getting attacked by the entire kitchen staff to end season 3.
