Few franchises are as controversial as the feel-good Christmas family comedy "Home Alone." The first two films are widely beloved, bonafide staples of the American Christmas movie canon. However, the subsequent sequels — of which there are many — are almost universally despised. Most people haven't seen all of the "Home Alone" movies, and they might be left wondering — are any of the follow-up films worth watching?
Some feel that Macaulay Culkin leaving the franchise after the second film is what set the subsequent movies up for failure. In this critic's opinion, the "Home Alone" entries 3-6 suffer from a lot more than bad casting. However, I watched every "Home Alone" movie so you didn't have to, and I am here to answer some age-old questions. Firstly, is "Home Alone 2" better than the original? And secondly, are any of the follow-up films worth watching? My answer might surprise you.
You might disagree,...

It’s not weird that we do this one first, right? Shhhh. We don’t have to actually tell anyone. One of you is going to give me shit, aren’t you? I think if we did do Dark Shadows Og, we’d have to do a whole Dark Shadows week. If you want that please send your love notes to the higher ups. The Phantoms episode of Wtf Happened to This Horror Movie? was Written by Emilie Black, Narrated by Adam Walton, Edited by Jaime Vazquez, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Ah, the late 1990s, a period of horror renewal, massive hits, and plenty of scares. Well, yes and no. Some films like the Scream franchise hit it big, like really big, and others, not so much. One of the failures of the late 1990s box office is Phantoms (watch it Here) which was considered a massive flop. How did Phantoms become considered one of the biggest flops of its era? Well, it’s a mix of a lot of factors, most of them easily guessed by those who have had the pleasure, or displeasure, of seeing the film. The story here is that of a small town where the whole of the population has vanished,...

Exclusive: Randall Park has been cast as a series regular and Spencer Garrett is set to recur opposite Uzo Aduba in Netflix’s Shondaland murder-mystery drama The Residence, from writer Paul William Davies.
Using Kate Andersen Brower’s book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House as a jumping off point, the eight-episode series is described as “a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and back stairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world’s most famous mansion.” Its premise: 132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. One wildly eccentric detective (Aduba). One disastrous State Dinner.
Park will play FBI Special Agent Edwin Park, and Garrett will recur as FBI Director Wally Glick.
In addition to Aduba, they join previously announced cast including Andre Braugher, Susan Kelechi Watson, Ken Marino, Jason Lee, Bronson Pinchot, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Al Mitchell, Dan Perrault and Mary Wiseman.

Welcome to the Brenaissance -- or Brendanaissance, whatever you want to call it!
Brendan Fraser is enjoying a long-overdue comeback thanks to his gut-wrenching performance in The Whale.
Though he's most famous for goofy roles and being beautiful in 1990s rom-coms, Fraser has an exceptional range that often gets overlooked, particularly as he has matured and taken on a wider variety of roles in diverse projects.
Fraser has starred alongside some cinematic heavy hitters and taken all sorts of risks -- indie films, big-budget studio flicks, and television -- he's done it all.
Here are some examples of his best work, including some of his biggest hits and some underrated gems.
The Mummy (1999)
Fraser channels Errol Flynn and Indiana Jones as Rick O'Connell in The Mummy, his most commercially successful and enduring hit.
It's got everything -- thrills, romance, action, horror. Fraser and co-star Rachel Weisz have terrific chemistry as...

Everyone loves a comeback story. Just look at Tiger Woods. And Hollywood especially loves a good comeback such as Judy Garland with 1954’s “A Star is Born.” The latest Tinseltown comeback is none other than Brendan Fraser, who over the past 30 years starred in everything from lowbrow comedies (“Encino Man”) to action blockbusters ( “The Mummy”) to acclaimed dramas and even a Best Picture Oscar winner (“Crash”).
But the 53-year-old actor has gone through a rough patch: a divorce including a well-publicized alimony issue in 2013, health issues, depression, the death of his mother and the 2018 revelation where he alleged, he had been sexually assaulted by the former head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn. in 2003. After stepping away for a while, Fraser has been slowly working his way back appearing in such TV series as Showtime’s “The Affair” and DC Universe and HBO Max series “Doom Patrol.”

1. “The Baby-Sitters Club” Season 1 (available now)
Why Should I Watch? Netflix’s adaptation of Ann M. Martin’s ’90s era novels have been wooing plenty of viewers well-outside its young adult demographic — this critic included — without abandoning its most important fanbase. “The Baby-Sitters Club” is a rich, warm-hearted story about a group of middle-schoolers who band together, not only to make a little extra money and give themselves an excuse to hang out, but to provide a much-needed service for parents; the titular baby-sitters have an earnest yet relaxed investment in the kids they care for, and that same casually compassionate attitude buoys the series itself to lovable heights. Adult viewers may come for a pastel-dipped piece of nostalgia, but they — and younger audiences — will stick around for a savvy, inclusive, and rewarding update on “Bsc.”
Bonus Reason: Casting is strong throughout the show, but casting directors Danielle Aufiero and...

Manhunt: Deadly Games (Spectrum)
Those of you lucky enough to have Spectrum cable get to see the second season of Manhunt that began on Discovery with the look at Ted Kaczynski.
This time around, they're looking at the Richard Jewell situation in a series that stars Connie Britton.
I love more scripted television as much as the next guy, but it's hard to get behind content that is available to so few, right?

The latest series from CBS All Access is coming to the streaming network on Thursday, February 6.
All episodes of Interrogation, a true-crime series that spans two decades, drop at once, and it was the network's intent that you could watch the premiere and then any subsequent episode in any order followed by the finale.
My opinion on the matter differs, though, so I'll first share my thoughts on whether you should watch followed by my thoughts on how to watch.
True-crime events make a great segway to movies, television, and podcasts, and this interpretation of a real case is no different.
The premiere introduces us to Eric Fisher (Kyle Gallner), a rough-looking young man who, at the age of 17, finds himself at continual odds with his parents, Henry and Mary Fisher (David Strathairn and Joanna Going).
On the day we meet Eric, he's out screwing around and doing the things...

The Good Doctor‘s Shaun was an absolute wreck at the close of Monday’s fall finale — and it was Lea, not Carly, who was there to embrace him in his time of need.
In “Friends and Family,” Lea and Glassman accompanied Shaun on a trip to visit his estranged, ailing father Ethan (Battlestar Galactica vet Michael Trucco) and eventually chose to forgive him for his myriad shortcomings. But in their last interaction, a seemingly remorseful Ethan showed his true colors when he lashed out at Shaun and blamed him for Steve’s death.

"But I don't know what I'm supposed to do!" A festival promo trailer has debuted for an indie drama titled Drowning, the second feature directed by actress Melora Walters. She writes, directs, and stars in the film, which is premiering at the Austin Film Festival later this month after first showing at the Rome Film Festival. The cast includes Mira Sorvino, Gil Bellows, Jay Mohr, Joanna Going, Christopher Backus, Steven Swadling, and Jim O'Heir. There's tons of emotion in all those intimate, close-up shots. Looks like a tough film to watch. Here's the first promo trailer (+ teaser poster) for Melora Walters' Drowning, originally from Variety: The film tells the story of a mother (Melora Walters) coming to...

"I was wrecked," Mariska Hargitay said about life after filming Law & Order: Svu's "Something Happened," a season 19 episode that broke from the show's long-running story structure and largely featured an interview between her character, Lt. Olivia Benson, and Melora Walters' Laurel Linwood, a rape victim…or was she? The interview between the two characters unraveled many layers of both of them. Laurel said her dad abused her for years, but it was really her sister, Leah (Joanna Going), who suffered the years of abuse. To get to the truth, Benson had to acknowledge some repressed emotions about her own father and his role, or lack thereof, in her life. Benson was a product of rape, she...

Actress Rose McGowan shared a photo from her 1998 Miramax film “Phantoms” to Twitter, saying cryptically that she was filming the project “when it happened.” While it’s unclear what she’s referring to, for the last week, McGowan has used the social platform to accuse producer Harvey Weinstein of raping her in 1997. “This is the movie I was filming when it happened. I played a 16 year old,” McGowan wrote on Monday with a still from the film. Actress Joanna Going (“Mad Men”) appears with her in the image. “Phantoms” was directed by Joe Chappelle and starred Ben Affleck, who McGowan told.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best TV show airing in 2017 that people may have missed this year? This could be a new show that debuted or a returning show that aired a new season this year.
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
There have actually been two “forgotten” shows in 2017 that I’ve stumped for pretty hard. The first is “Hap and Leonard’s” second season, “Mucho Mojo,” on SundanceTV. It’s nearly a sea change from its first season, as it tells a difficult and complicated racial story that’s balanced with its trademark wit and quirky sensibilities. Over the course of the awards season so far, specifically during the precursors, no one has had a quicker ride to the top tier of contention than Paul Dano. Originally, it seemed like his excellent work in Love & Mercy was destined to be overlooked, but then something interesting happened…he started getting nominated, as well as winning in certain places. Now, he’s a legitimate threat to be nominated at the Academy Awards. I’m thrilled that such a good performance in such a small film is catching on, so it begs the question…have we been underestimating Dano the whole time? Let’s discuss that a bit now! This is the story of Brian Wilson the frontman for the Beach Boys. The movie shows us him in the 1960’s as an emerging superstar before mental illness gets the best of him, as well as in the 1980’s when he...

When Jonathan Tucker thinks about skipping a set during the workout regimen that carves him into Kingdom‘s Jay Kulina, a text from castmate Matt Lauria will be just the thing to taunt him into toughing out those impossible reps.
Lauria himself regrets returning from hiatus 15 pounds above his fighting weight (thanks to an off-season affinity for pad thai!), while Kiele Sanchez reported for duty in May at what was the start of her second trimester of a pregnancy.*
In other words, there’s no stopping the members of DirecTV’s dysfunctional family/Mma fighting drama, which opens Season 2 this Wednesday at 9/8c.

One of my all time favorite actors happens to be John Cusack. Over the past decade or so, one of my newer favorites is Paul Dano. As such, the concept of the two of them in a film together pumped me up from the minute that they were cast in Love & Mercy. Then, I saw it and realized that they wouldn’t be sharing the screen, but instead would be combining to bring the Beach Boys frontman Brian Wilson to life. The film is really strong, using both Cusack and Dano to great effect in a soft of hybrid performance. It’s very unique, and now audiences will get to enjoy their work this weekend when the movie comes to theaters. If you don’t know who Brian Wilson is, well…where have you been? He’s the frontman for the Beach Boys, and this is his story. We see...
