The third feature by director Michele Soavi—his second collaboration with producer/co-writer Dario Argento—has been called “deranged” (We Are Cult), “disturbing” (Blu-ray.com) and “long overdue for reevaluation” (Bloody Disgusting). Now it can be experienced like never before: As a global satanic cabal grows in ferocity, an unwitting young schoolteacher (Kelly Curtis—sister of Jamie Lee—in her sole genre role) is chosen to deliver the ultimate evil. Herbert Lom (Count Dracula), Mariangela Giordano (Burial Ground), and Giovanni Lombardo Radice (The House on the Edge of the Park) co-star in “a nightmarish fever dream from a visionary filmmaker” (Good Efficient Butchery), scanned in 4K from the original negative with over three hours of special features—including new interviews with Soavi and Argento—for the first time ever.

Severin Films kicks off the new year with three North American premieres that bring “one of the best labels in physical media” (Polygon) into 2024 replete with classic monsters, barbed-wire garrotes, ‘80s Italo-Sleaze in Uhd and arguably the most depraved bedtime accessory ever created.

For January, Severin presents the ultimate version of Jess Franco’s 1972 mash-up Dracula, Prisoner Of Frankenstein; the rarely-seen Ozploitation slasher Bloodmoon, complete with infamous ‘Fright Break Challenge’; and Andrea Bianchi’s off-the-rails zombie carnage classic Burial Ground, now in eye-popping, flesh-ripping 4K.

To further celebrate everyone’s favorite shambling Etruscans, an all-new Burial Ground t-shirt and Michael Pillowcase will be available in two of this month’s bundles.

January also brings much-requested wide-release versions of previously limited-edition titles — Frank Henenlotter’s black comedy shocker Bad Biology, controversial ‘80s sleaze classic Nightmare and Lucio Fulci’s giallo masterpiece The Psychic — all fully restored in 4K Uhd.

It is truly amazing how crowded the zombie market was in the early ‘80s, at least in Europe; after the success of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978) begat Lucio Fulci’s unofficial “sequel” Zombie (’79), the floodgates were opened and the undead made their (slow and shuffling) move at the box office. Amidst the barrage was one Burial Ground (1981), a film that boils down a zombie flick to its very essence: people get munched, and they get munched good. Forget social subtext; Burial Ground barely has text.

Aka The Night of Terrors, Burial Ground was released on its home turf of Italy in the summer, with the U.S. not receiving a release until late ’85 before dropping on video in early ’86. I have to admit I didn’t have many positive expectations for this later-in-life Jess Franco flick. I’m a Franco fan, but not a Franco apologist. I really enjoy a good number of his films but recognize he’s churned out some real clunkers, especially the period immediately after 1987’s Faceless. The reputation of Killer Barbys was less than stellar with even hard-core Franco fans generally dismissing the film. So it was that I received a screener from Kino Lorber and popped the Blu-ray in. Also known as The Devil's Daughter, the 1991 horror film The Sect (helmed by Cemetery Man director Michele Soavi) is coming to Blu-ray this spring, and Scorpion Releasing has now revealed the official cover art and special features for the release.

According to Blu-ray.com, The Sect Blu-ray is expected to be released in May, and we'll keep Daily Dead readers updated as more details are divulged. In the meantime, check out the official bonus features and cover art below.

"When the moon turns red the dead shall rise" in 1981's Burial Ground, coming out on Blu-ray and DVD from Severin Films later this fall.

ComingSoon.net announced that the folks at Severin Films will release Burial Ground on Blu-ray and DVD this October 25th. The new release will feature a 2K restoration of the Italian zombie movie as well as several extras. A separate DVD release will also be available, as well as a limited edition Blu-ray (of only 3,000 items) with alternative artwork by Wes Benscoter (see third image below).

Those who order directly from Severin Films' website will receive a 12x18 poster, and fans can also seek out Severin Films' special Nights of Terror bundle comprised of the special edition Blu-ray, the poster, enamel pin, T-shirt, and shot glass.
