- On 5 November 1967, when he was 17 years old and the Bee Gees had just had a hit with "Massachusetts", he and his fiancée (later his wife) Molly were on board a train that derailed with 49 deaths at Hither Green, south of London, England, UK. He stood up to pull the communication cord and very narrowly escaped being decapitated by a piece of rail that came through the train window.
