In 2021, Marvel gave us WandaVision, the first show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then it's been off to the races, with shows like Loki, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and more following. Personally, I feel the decision to expand the MCU to television was a genius idea. In fact, I’d argue that in some ways the shows have been better than the movies because they are able to go more in depth.

With that in mind, we thought we’d look back at all of Marvel Disney+ shows we’ve gotten so far and rank them from worst to best. Bear in mind that being “the worst” doesn’t mean the show was a disaster, because Marvel rarely puts out anything bad. It simply means that it did not match the level of hype and excitement as the other series.

The Duplass Brothers-produced series Somebody Somewhere has long been championed by critics and fans but didn’t receive any accolades on a major scale until it won a Peabody Award for its wonderful second season. This recognition will hopefully bring the show to a broader audience in time for its third and final season to warm and crush their hearts, as it is an incredible work of slice-of-life dramedy that somehow tops the already incredible first two seasons.

This season follows the small-town Kansans we’ve come to know — Sam, Joel, and all their friends and loved ones — as they grow apart, each experiencing their own struggles. Although splitting up the cast of an ensemble-driven show like Somebody Somewhere is often a mistake, this approach feels incredibly and unexpectedly natural here because it is rooted in a thematic need rather than a narrative one.

A sports drama film or series typically follows the story of a protagonist who has chosen to swim upstream and carve an identity for themselves in a world where they are often regarded as an underdog. In this sense, the sport becomes the medium by which this individual reveals deeper personal growth, that which had been hidden potential, and resilience. In most cases, the narrative of the protagonist navigates various challenges in and out of the field as they undergo trials with perseverance, self-discovery, and societal pressures that have a way of shaping their experience. The first Spanish-language original series from Hulu, La Máquina, directed by Gabriel Ripstein, treads a similar territory by following the story of an aging pugilist. But every punch lands in the wrong places. With an underutilized structure, the series fails to render an effective narrative, with one growing increasingly disconnected from the characters and their stakes equally.

Paola Malanga is the artistic director of the Rome Film Festival which kicks off tomorrow (October 16) with the world premiere of Andrea Segre’s political drama The Great Ambition.

It is Malanga’s third edition at the helm of the festival, having joined in 2022 from Rai Cinema where she was deputy director of its product division spanning production and acquisition. She has also been a journalist, film critic and author throughout her career.

Among the world premieres in Rome’s main Progressive Cinema competition are dark comedy The Trainer by American History X director Tony Kaye and Eran Ricklis’ Reading Lolita In Tehran.

Forget Oasis: there’s a more dynamic reunion in town. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, the lifelong friends who first paired up on screen to play oversexed teenagers in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 road movie Y Tu Mamá También, are back. Unlike the Gallagher brothers, Bernal and Luna never fell out or became estranged. For 20 years now, they have co-run a documentary film festival and two production companies in their native capital Mexico City. Their acting collaborations, though, have been few and far between, with only the soccer-based Rudo y Cursi and the eccentric Will Ferrell vehicle Casa de mi Padre to their name since Cuarón’s vibrant hit climaxed with them tumbling into bed together.

Efd Studios, an advanced tech rentals company based in Mexico, Colombia, the U.S. and Spain, has announced plans to open what it describes as the largest virtual set on the European continent.

The facility will boast over 2,000 sq. meter of set space equipped with LED technology and state-of-the-art computer and processing chain, Georgina Terán, Efd Studios CEO, announced at the Iberseries & Platino Industria industry forum in Madrid.

The set will be located at Efd Studios in Boadilla del Monte., a 20 minutes drive west of Madrid, occupying a dedicated space of near half of the 5,000 sq. meter headquarters of Efd Studios in Spain. Efd Studios is currently renovating the space to adapt it to the new needs. It aims to start operations in the second quarter of 2025 at the latest, a company spokesperson told Variety.

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, lifelong friends who have previously worked together on Y Tu Mamá También and Rudo y Cursi, are reuniting on screen after more than a decade for their new limited series La Máquina.

The duo first conceived the project in 2010, with García Bernal playing an aging boxer (nicknamed “La Máquina,” which means “The Machine”) and Luna as his eccentric manager securing one last shot at a title. They knew from the beginning who would play which part, as García Bernal teased Luna was never going to play the athlete: “Come on, look at him!”

It’s clear that writer Marco Ramirez wants to defy expectations when it comes to the boxing drama, but the show does occasionally find itself falling into the trap of the genre’s tropes.

The Rome Film Festival has revealed its meetings programme for its 2024 edition, which will include masterclasses with actor and director Viggo Mortensen, writer Dennis Lehane and actress Chiara Mastroianni.

Mortensen is in Rome to present his second film as a director, The Dead Don’t Hurt, and will talk about the experience of making it and also about his career.

Tunisia has selected Nada Mezni Hfaiedh’s drama Take My Breath, exploring intersex identity, to represent it in the Best International Feature Film category of the 97th Oscars.

The drama, which released in Tunisia late last year, stars Amina Ben Ismail as 23-year-old seamstress Shams, whose life is overturned when their intersex identity is exposed.

Shams escapes to the city, where they live in the shadows, shunned by true love and rejected by society’s rigid norms and expectations.

Last year’s Tunisian entry, documentary Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania, made it onto the shortlist in the International Feature category and went on to be nominated in the Best Documentary category.

The country’s National Cinema Centre announced the selection with just over 24 hours to go until the deadline for submission to the category for the 97th Academy Awards, at 5 p.m. Pt on October 2.

Tunisia has made its Oscar pick, selecting Take My Breath, the debut feature from director Nada Mezni Hafaiedh as its entry for the 2025 Academy Awards in the best international feature category.

The drama follows Shams, a young seamstress whose tranquil life unravels when their intersex identity, and the steamy love triangle in which their are entwined, is exposed. When Shams is targeted by an obsessive attacker, they are forced to escape to the capital city of Tunis.

Amina Ben Smail, seen alongside Gael García Bernal and Renate Reinsve in Pierro Mesina’s Berlin film festival entry Another End, plays Shams.
