It’s hard to imagine many actors having as much bona fides in the world of boxing as Rosie Perez. The Oscar-nominated star of “Do the Right Thing,” “White Men Can’t Jump,” “Fearless,” and “Birds of Prey,” has been a boxing fan for decades and is so aligned with the sport that famed broadcaster Al Bernstein once dubbed her the “First Lady of Boxing.”
“I grew up like the boxers,” she once told the New York Times. “I grew up hard knocks. But I learned to fight my way through life. You get knocked down, you get back up again. I think that’s why boxing resonated with me so much even as a little girl.”
So it comes as little surprise that Perez jumped at the chance to sit down with actors Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal to discuss their new Hulu series “La Maquina.” The limited series...

In 2021, Marvel gave us WandaVision, the first show set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since then it's been off to the races, with shows like Loki, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and more following. Personally, I feel the decision to expand the MCU to television was a genius idea. In fact, I’d argue that in some ways the shows have been better than the movies because they are able to go more in depth.
With that in mind, we thought we’d look back at all of Marvel Disney+ shows we’ve gotten so far and rank them from worst to best. Bear in mind that being “the worst” doesn’t mean the show was a disaster, because Marvel rarely puts out anything bad. It simply means that it did not match the level of hype and excitement as the other series.
Now, without further adieu, let’s get ranking.

The Boys Season 5: Release Date, Cast Details, & What to Expect Next! ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
It’s official: The Boys Season 5 is on the way, ready to close out Prime Video’s blockbuster superhero satire in explosive style. Even before The Boys Season 4 finale dropped, it was already clear that this was the penultimate season. Now, Season 5 is confirmed as the series’ final chapter, with all signs pointing to a grand exit. And though it’s still in early development, showrunner Eric Kripke has hinted at what’s in store as he takes fans through his “last ten pages” of twisted superhero carnage.
But with The Boys, no finale’s ever a quick hit. The fourth season boasted a massive 21% viewer spike over its predecessor and wasn’t shy about tackling 2024’s political landscape. The final episode even required a last-minute title change, dropping its intended name following a high-profile attempted assassination.

For two actors who have seemed almost inseparable since they burst onto the scene in Alfonso Cuarón’s “Y Tu Mamá También,” Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal actually haven’t acted together much. Sure, they recently went toe-to-toe with Bert and Ernie in a friendship quiz, but in terms of screen time, the duo has only appeared in three films together, counting ‘También’” ‘and the Will Ferrell curio “Casa de mi Padre.” Thus, Hulu’s first Spanish-language series, “La Máquina,” feels like something of a homecoming for the two stars.

The Duplass Brothers-produced series Somebody Somewhere has long been championed by critics and fans but didn’t receive any accolades on a major scale until it won a Peabody Award for its wonderful second season. This recognition will hopefully bring the show to a broader audience in time for its third and final season to warm and crush their hearts, as it is an incredible work of slice-of-life dramedy that somehow tops the already incredible first two seasons.
Somebody Somewhere Season 3 Review
This season follows the small-town Kansans we’ve come to know — Sam, Joel, and all their friends and loved ones — as they grow apart, each experiencing their own struggles. Although splitting up the cast of an ensemble-driven show like Somebody Somewhere is often a mistake, this approach feels incredibly and unexpectedly natural here because it is rooted in a thematic need rather than a narrative one.

Hulu’s new Spanish-language series ‘La Máquina’ (2024) is a visually striking, dark dramedy that masterfully blends campy, over-the-top elements with moments of psychological tension. Set primarily in Mexico, the show follows an aging boxer and his crafty manager as they gear up for what could be their final match. What truly sets ‘La Máquina’ apart from typical sports dramas is its surreal tone and its nuanced portrayal of family dynamics. The series balances moments of absurdity with heartfelt interactions, creating a unique blend of suspense, humor, and emotional depth. A sports drama film or series typically follows the story of a protagonist who has chosen to swim upstream and carve an identity for themselves in a world where they are often regarded as an underdog. In this sense, the sport becomes the medium by which this individual reveals deeper personal growth, that which had been hidden potential, and resilience. In most cases, the narrative of the protagonist navigates various challenges in and out of the field as they undergo trials with perseverance, self-discovery, and societal pressures that have a way of shaping their experience. The first Spanish-language original series from Hulu, La Máquina, directed by Gabriel Ripstein, treads a similar territory by following the story of an aging pugilist. But every punch lands in the wrong places. With an underutilized structure, the series fails to render an effective narrative, with one growing increasingly disconnected from the characters and their stakes equally.

Diego Luna finished filming his final scenes as Cassian Andor months ago, but Andor Season 2 still hasn't been given an official release date. While promoting his new show, La Maquina, co-starring his real-life best friend, Gael Garcia Bernal, Luna told RadioTimes that Andor is coming, but he can't reveal anything about it.
I can't really tell you anything about 'Andor,' but it's coming out. It's coming out, and it's great. The writing of Tony Gilroy is really powerful.Diego Luna.
Andor was originally anticipated to be released much earlier but is now expected to premiere sometime early next year. Luna will reprise his role as Cassian Andor, whose life takes a dramatic turn after he joins the Rebellion. The second and final season will cover four years in Cassian's life before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, likely including Cassian's journey to becoming a valuable asset to the Rebel Alliance.

Werewolf By Night, Marvel Studios' first ever Special presentation, debuted on Disney+ in 2022, and opened the door to a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that's yet to be further explored.
The black-and-white Halloween Special really was a first for the franchise, paying homage to the classic Universal monster movies with its noirish style, creepy atmosphere and heightened levels of violence.
Werewolf By Night introduced several new characters such as Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) Ted, aka Man-Thing (Carey Jones), and the titular lycanthrope himself, Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), and fans have been eager for an update on their potential return.
Director Michael Giacchino previously confirmed that discussions about doing more with the characters have taken place, but it sounds like any plans for a follow-up episode have been put on the back-burner.

In an era dominated by larger-than-life superhero flicks, sometimes a change of pace works like a charm. Marvel Studios learnt that with its first ever special, Werewolf by Night, a 53-minute long movie (some believe that it borders between the idea of a movie and a show).
Starring the likes of Gael Garcia Bernal, Laura Donnelly, Kirk Thatcher, and Harriet Sansom Harris, the special was held in high regard by both fans and critics. Given its reception, it did not come as a surprise that people want more of it. And director Michael Giacchino might have the positive update all of us were waiting for.

“La Máquina” is an ambitious Hulu limited series 15 years in the making, and not just because it’s the platform’s first Spanish-language original.
Born from a concept by frequent collaborators and longtime friends Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal, the show follows an aging Mexican boxer’s journey back to the top of the sport as he juggles familial responsibilities, a kooky manager with a plastic surgery problem and an underlying mystery about the criminal underworld that seems to control his surroundings. Bernal plays boxer Esteban “La Máquina” Osuna, Luna is nearly unrecognizable as manager Andy Pérez.
“Boxing is a great metaphor to explore what success actually means, and how it can become a trap,” Luna told TheWrap about the themes behind the collaboration.

Given that shared past, you might expect them to share the screen often, in the same way that Matt Damon and Ben Affleck have across their careers. Instead, they’ve only starred in two other films together, most recently back in 2012’s Casa di mi Padre. So their new Hulu miniseries,...

La Maquina is a brand new Mexican series, set in the world of boxing, that stars long-time friends, and brilliant actors, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna. To mark the release of the show, we had the pleasure of speaking to the two, as we discuss their characters, and what it is about boxing that makes for such a compelling stomping ground for storytelling.
They also talk about their friendship, they talk about eating kebabs together in Berlin – and also discuss each other’s respective roles, and which stand out (naturally Andor comes up). Good old-fashioned wholesome content here for you, enjoy!
Watch the full interview with Gael Garcia Bernal & Diego Luna here:
Synopsis
Follows an ageing boxer whose crafty manager secures one last shot at a title; but if they want to make it to fight night, they must navigate a mysterious underworld force and the boxer’s own ailing mind.

Return of the Mexican sex bombs: Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna on their boxing comedy La Máquina
They shot to fame as randy teens in Y Tu Máma También. Now the duo are back in a tale of Botox, boxing and borderline incest. Getting in shape took discipline, they reveal – and lots of broccoli
Forget Oasis: there’s a more dynamic reunion in town. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, the lifelong friends who first paired up on screen to play oversexed teenagers in Alfonso Cuarón’s 2001 road movie Y Tu Mamá También, are back. Unlike the Gallagher brothers, Bernal and Luna never fell out or became estranged. For 20 years now, they have co-run a documentary film festival and two production companies in their native capital Mexico City. Their acting collaborations, though, have been few and far between, with only the soccer-based Rudo y Cursi and the eccentric Will Ferrell vehicle Casa de mi Padre to their name since Cuarón’s vibrant hit climaxed with them tumbling into bed together.

We're stepping into the ring on the Pilot TV Podcast this week as we sent our very own journalistic heavyweight Boyd Hilton to chat to Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal about their Spanish-language boxing drama La Máquina on Disney+ [36:25 — 52:15 approx]. And that's not all in the fisticuff quarters, as we (non-literally) bash Kay for daring to take some time off work to go to a wellness retreat and give James an earful for his egregious (if entirely oblivious) queue-jumping.
Back on the actual TV talk front however, James, Kay, and Boyd embrace the spooky season's commencement with a listener question that's all about the best TV-based horrors. (No prizes for guessing how far we get without a shoutout for The Last Of Us!) There's also some chat about what the team have all been watching this week — including Apples Never Fall, Heartstopper Season 3, and, er, that Philip Schofield island thing on Channel 5.

Another brutal Stormfront is imminent as Aya Cash braces fans for Vought Rising.
Although the actress admitted they “don’t actually know yet” when The Boys spin-off will begin filming, she teased an exciting prequel to the comic book adaptation after reading the first two episodes.
“I’ve read two scripts and they’re absolutely insanely good. But that’s about all I can tell you,” Cash told ComicBook while discussing her new superhero genre satire series The Franchise, premiering Sunday on Max.
Deadline reported in July that Prime Video had ordered the spin-off of The Boys, shortly before Cash and co-star Jensen Ackles shared the news at Comic-Con.
Showrunner Paul Grellong and executive producer Eric Kripke described the prequel as “a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy (Ackles), and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans...

After 44 years, Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal‘s friendship continues to spark creativity.
While discussing Hulu‘s La Máquina, which premieres Oct. 9, Luna opened up about his “profound bond” with his co-star Bernal and how it contributed to their work in the boxing drama series that was more than a decade in the making.
“It would be easy to tell you, ‘It’s a daily decision to work on our friendship,'” Luna told The New York Times. “But it’s simply something neither of us can give up. I don’t want to, but even if I wanted to, I wouldn’t be able to. That’s what’s badass about it. Friendships can sometimes be very intense. Sometimes you need space. Sometimes you confront each other. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna grew up as friends in Mexico City, but that dynamic started to shift when they were cast together in Alfonso Cuarón‘s raunchy coming-of-age tale “Y tu mamá también.” Not only were they face with exchanging intimate moments with one another onscreen, but off-screen, the film would propel the two young actors into international stardom, kickstarting both of their careers, which have now lasted over two decades. In that time, Bernal and Luna continued to collaborate and remain close friends, acting together in Carlos Cuarón’s “Rudo y Cursi” and the Will Ferrell Spanish-language comedy “Casa di Mi Padre.” Now, they’re reuniting once more for the Hulu limited series “La Máquina,” which follows a battle-scarred Mexican boxer (Bernal) whose charismatic manager (Luna) sets out to reignite his career.

Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna, lifelong friends who have previously worked together on Y Tu Mamá También and Rudo y Cursi, are reuniting on screen after more than a decade for their new limited series La Máquina.
The duo first conceived the project in 2010, with García Bernal playing an aging boxer (nicknamed “La Máquina,” which means “The Machine”) and Luna as his eccentric manager securing one last shot at a title. They knew from the beginning who would play which part, as García Bernal teased Luna was never going to play the athlete: “Come on, look at him!”
Of working together again now at this stage in their careers, García Bernal told The Hollywood Reporter at the show’s L.A. premiere on Thursday, “It just gets better and better — it gets more complex, more beautiful, more engaging, more warm and intelligent and hopefully better,” adding, “We’re very good at working together,...

Hulu’s first Spanish-language television project, La Máquina, is a star-studded affair, serving as a reunion of Y tu mamá también actors Gael Garcia Bernal (Werewolf by Night) and Diego Luna (Andor). Benefitting from the charm of its leads, La Máquina gets off to a strong start but flounders in the later rounds.
La Máquina Review
La Máquina follows an aging boxer as he jumps on his last chance to win a title, only for his final shot at glory to be threatened by health issues and a shady criminal underworld that gets in the way. It’s clear that writer Marco Ramirez wants to defy expectations when it comes to the boxing drama, but the show does occasionally find itself falling into the trap of the genre’s tropes.

Longtime fans of Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal know the magic that happens when these two Mexican actors, childhood friends and longtime collaborators get together on screen. From the sexy road trip adventure of “Y Tu Mamá También” to the heartwarming soccer-centric “Rudo y Cursi” and even the slapstick “Casa de Mi Padre,” the duo brings the best out of each other. So it’s not surprising that Hulu placed their bets on the pair to help them produce their first ever Spanish-language original series to debut during Hispanic Heritage Month.
“La Máquina,” a limited-series about an aging boxer’s comeback with a criminal underworld twist, starts out delivering on that premise. But what you get extends far beyond that.
The show opens in flashy, fast-paced Vegas, minutes before fight night. Saúl (Andrés Delgado) rushes from casino to casino in a frantic search for a bottle of Fresquita-brand tamarind...

Hulu’s boxing series La Máquina begins not with glimpses of in-ring action, but with the drama taking place immediately around it. The camera whips through the crowds of entertainers, security guards, and personnel found backstage, all desperately trying to get things in order before the lights go down and the entrance music for the fight plays.
Eventually, we’re brought to the main man himself, Esteban “La Máquina” Osuna (Gael García Bernal), a veteran boxer known for his grit and determination. La Máquina carries itself with the same relentless energy: From the movements of the camera to the colors and the outsized personalities of the characters themselves, everything about it is vibrant and alive.
Esteban looks the part of the perfect prizefighter, though his hair is graying around the temples. He has the slightly gawky, boyish charm you find in many top athletes, perhaps the result of a life...

Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the main ceremony caps off a television year dominated by “Shōgun,” which already set a record for most Emmys by a drama series in a single year when it nearly swept the Creative Arts Emmys with 14. The FX drama, led by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, will attempt to beef up its overall take when it competes with eight nominations in six top categories: drama series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, writing and directing. TheWrap’s awards guru Steve Pond boldly predicts “Shōgun” will go six for six on Sunday.
