British actor Laurence Fox has lost a libel case with two men he called pedophiles on social media after they had called the My Son Hunter star a racist.
On Monday, the High Court in the U.K. deemed that Fox had defamed Simon Blake, a former LGBT charity trustee, and Crystal, a drag artist and former RuPaul’s Drag Race contestant, on Twitter/X in October 2020, when he called them pedophiles over an escalating row over Black History Month.
The Guardian reports that the spat on X started, when Fox said he would boycott U.K. grocery store Sainsbury’s for supporting “racial segregation and discrimination” after the company said it would establish safe spaces for Black employees during Black History Month in October 2020. Blake and Crystal, whose real name is Colin Seymour, responded to Fox’s call for a boycott by calling him racist. Fox, in turn, replied...

A number of directors are pursuing litigation against the digital indie film distributor 1091 Pictures for failing to make promised revenue-sharing payments after selling their films to the platform, now owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. Helmers are scrambling to reclaim distribution rights to their work out of fear that 1091 Pictures’ parent company could declare bankruptcy.
Filmmakers say they are owed their share of distribution revenue from licensing deals with 1091 but Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment has not come through with payments. Some have taken the company to court, including small-claims court, to press their cases.
Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment acknowledges that the company, which also owns Redbox and Crackle, has faced “cash flow issues,” as CEO Bill Rouhana told Variety. The company already disclosed that it was unable to file its third-quarter earnings information on time.

In one scene early in Todd Haynes’s new film, May December, Joe’s (Charles Melton) face flickers with the grey-blue light of the TV screen playing a commercial for face wash. The commercial stars Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), the TV star who will be playing his wife, Gracie (Julianne Moore), in an upcoming film and who will be visiting their home to do research for the role. The brief shot of Elizabeth’s face, sparkling with water and freshness and something like “realness,” loops on itself over and over again, while Joe’s eyes glaze over.
Later in the film, days into her research into Joe and Gracie’s lives, a lurid scene of an adult woman seducing a 13-year-old pet store employee plays on the television set in Elizabeth’s hotel room, a black bar on the screen boldly stating “Do Not Replicate.” It signals at once a trashiness...

"We have nothing to hide." 1091 Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for another mysterious, thrilling, scary new UFO doc called Moment of Contact, about the "Roswell of Brazil." It's made by director James Fox, a self-described "ufologist" who last directed the 2020 doc The Phenomenon all about UFO cover-ups. Ever since the military released all that unexplainable UFO footage for the public to freak out over, ufologists have been going extra crazy with even stronger and more convincing theories. Moment of Contact is an exploration of extraterrestrial encounters centered on a series of events in 1996 when citizens of the town of Varginha, Brazil reported seeing a UFO crash and one or more strange creatures. Freaky shit. It has interviews with key eyewitnesses, experts and officials, including physicist & ufologist Stanton Friedman, Brazilian Air Force General Jose Carlos Pereira, and Brazilian ufologist Ademar Jose Gevaerd. This seems so convincing and sure of the evidence.

Karel Reisz’ epic biography of Isadora Duncan—an American dancer whose European exploits made her a political lightning rod—stars Vanessa Redgrave, no stranger to controversy herself. Told mostly in flashback as Duncan dictates her memoirs, the 1968 film co-stars James Fox and Jason Robards. Redgrave won just about every best actress award under the sun save for the Oscar.

The subversive 1963 classic crackles with undertones of class, sexuality and communism, with Dirk Bogarde at his finest as the sociopathic manservant
Joseph Losey’s monochrome psycho-horror satire from 1963 is now re-released; it took an expatriate American to orchestrate this very English festival of class, fear, sex and shame with its menacing screenplay by Harold Pinter. Dirk Bogarde stars as the sinister manservant who gradually gains psychological control over his weak-willed master played by James Fox. The film was first considered unreleasably upsetting and weird, and notoriously gathered dust for a year on the shelf while Bogarde was humiliatingly forced to make another of the cheesy Doctor comedies he was trying to put behind him – Doctor in Distress – to pay off a tax bill.
Bogarde plays Barrett, a professional manservant whose manner is sometimes self-effacingly blank, sometimes ingratiating, camp and cunning. He is hired as a live-in valet by Tony (Fox...

With the Pinter-penned 1963 classic The Servant back in cinemas, there’s a chance to reflect on the playwright’s less-acknowledged acting performances
Like an unhurried but dependable butler, The Servant is here again. It was only nine years ago that Joseph Losey’s crackling psychological drama, about the shifting power games between a toff (James Fox) and his manservant (Dirk Bogarde), was last doing the rounds in cinemas. But this is not a film that ever gets old.

To mark the release of Joseph Losey’s Mr. Klein on 13th September and The Servant on 20th September, we’ve been given 2 bundles of each film to give away on Blu-ray.
Mr. Klein
This brand-new restoration of the César Award-winning political thriller directed by Joseph Losey is starring Alain Delon in a career defining role with a special appearance from Jeanne Moreau. Mr. Klein, with its Kafkaesque focus on the themes of identity and obsession, has become a classic of the doppelgänger paranoia genre and is one of Losey’s darkest films.
Paris, January 1942 – art dealer Robert Klein (Alain Delon) is making a killing. For this loyal Frenchman the Nazi occupation is a unique business opportunity. He stands to profit from the Jewish people’s misfortune, as they sell their possessions in a hurry to leave the country. But when a Jewish newspaper turns up on Klein’s doorstep,...

Charlie Watts’ drums were the foundation of The Rolling Stones. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote the songs, got the most press, and were the most visible members, but Watts dictated the style. Besides being named to Vanity Fair’s “Style” Hall of Fame, Watts kept the Stones’ sound intact and impeccable, regardless of whatever the songwriters brought into the studio.
There is an incident recounted in the 2010 memoir Life, by Richards and James Fox, about a mid-1980s party which hits the nail on the head. Mick drunk-dialed Charlie’s hotel room in the middle of the night to invite him to a party which was raging. Jagger demanded to know “Where’s my drummer?” Watts showed up. He’d showered, shaved, put on a suit and a tie, beautiful shoes, freshly shined, and “you could smell his cologne.” He walked up to the Rolling Stones’ frontman, grabbed him by the lapel,...

Those who have a weakness for British spy movies will find plenty to like in "The Whistle Blower", a largely unheralded 1986 production that boasts a fine performance by Michael Caine. He plays Frank Jones, a nondescript middle-aged Brit with a somewhat convoluted background. He was a fighter pilot in the military but his career came to an end when he struck a superior officer. It's then implied that he went on to work for British Intelligence in some capacity, though in reality his act of military insubordination would probably have excluded him from that position. When we are introduced to Frank he is a widower and owner of a small office supply business who is paying a visit to his 28 year-old son Bob for a low key celebration of his offspring's birthday. It turns out that Bob is employed by Government Communications Headquarters (Gchq), which is a branch of the intelligence community.

If you aren’t disturbed after you watch this documentary, you weren’t paying attention. You will Want to pay attention to this information. The new documentary The Phenomenon, directed by James Fox, starts off like any of a hundred other UFO documentaries, cataloguing eyewitness testimonies, all of whom seem credible, but in most cases, a testimony is all you get, or some sketchy photographs that could be fake, particularly in an era of pretty convincing Photoshop.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s still important to pay attention even at the beginning, as what you see is not just some dry documentary, but a case being built for what’s to come. The information flow is important, and so by the time we get to the now famous recordings taken directly from US Navy fighter planes, you aren’t surprised at the footage, but at what...

Exclusive: More than fifty years after its first publication, British writer Robin Maugham’s controversial 1967 novel The Wrong People is getting a movie adaptation.
Arthouse outfit Peccadillo Pictures, the UK’s foremost distributor of Lgbt movies, is teaming up on the project with veteran UK screenwriter David McGillivray (Schizo), who has adapted the novel and will make his directorial debut.
Set against the backdrop of 1960s Tangier, the thriller tells the story of Arnold Turner, a repressed English schoolmaster on holiday in Morocco, where he meets Ewing Baird, a wealthy American expat with a dark secret. As Turner becomes more involved with Ewing he realizes he has been lured into a dangerous trap.
Maugham’s first explicitly gay-themed novel was critically praised but also garnered controversy. Homosexuality was still illegal in Britain for most of the 1960s.

PerformanceA man forcibly stripped and smeared with dog shit; a kiss, carefully choreographed to evade the censor’s gaze; a liberated prisoner devouring a living, squirming squid: these images live beyond the constraints of their time, imprinted in my mind. They shock and they dare but, most of all, they hold power because they transgress the received rules of acceptability and decency.Subversive and transgressive images were almost omnipresent at Bristol’s Cinema Rediscovered festival, and with good reason. Many so-called great films are decorated as such precisely because they challenge: society is weighed, measured, and found wanting. Politically charged art seeks change, in part, through depiction and exposure, a process illustrated in Nicolas Roeg’s Performance (1970). The conservative and reactionary Chas (James Fox) undergoes transformation when confronted by the free love and multiculturalism of Turner’s (Mick Jagger) bohemian lifestyle. Transgression is an act that challenges dominant power structures,...

“Even the bath water was dirty.” According to director Nicolas Roeg, that was the reaction of an appalled Warner Bros. executive at a test screening of “Performance” in 1968, one that went so badly that even studio staff walked out. It was shelved for 18 months before being unceremoniously dumped into cinemas in 1970.
Fifty years later, it’s considered a classic. In his critically acclaimed Channel 4 documentary miniseries, “The Story of Film,” director and critic Mark Cousins said: “If any movie should be compulsory viewing for filmmakers, maybe this is it.” Co-directed by Roeg and Donald Cammell, “Performance” is sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll distilled to its purest visual expression. And now, a new limited-edition coffee-table book from Coattail Publications, “Performance: The Making of a Classic,” goes down the rabbit hole and reveals new details about the movie and its 1968 production.

The 1970s were the heyday of what was still known, with Victorian understatement, as the love scene: those writhing arenas of nude intimacy, which moviegoers experienced with a touch of voyeuristic awe, to the point that the scenes were talked about for years, or even decades. And except for the clashing close encounters in “Last Tango in Paris,” no love scene of the ’70s was as celebrated, as talked about, or as swooned over as the one that appeared a year later in “Don’t Look Now,” the splendidly creepy 1973 chiller that’s arguably the greatest movie directed by Nicolas Roeg, who died Friday at 90.

More concerned with blazing his own trail than catering to commercial concerns, Roeg created dramas that played with chronology and offended small-minded viewers, resulting in a body of work full of cult classics that were often rejected upon release, only to be reevaluated far more favorably in subsequent years as their pioneering qualities influenced future artists. For a slice of festive family fun there’s no better time than a Family Christmas Movie. This year, along with your Scrooged, Muppets Christmas Carol and Elf, a new comedy is trying its luck for a place under the Christmas Tree. Surviving Christmas with the Relatives came to the capital yesterday evening for its premiere and stars Gemma Whelan, Michael Landes, Patricia Hodge and Ronni Ancona walked the red carpet along with writer/director James Dearden.
The film also stars Joely Richardson, Julian Ovenden, Sally Phillips, James Fox, Sophie Simnett from Disney’s The Lodge and Jonas Moore.
With George R. R. Martin’s HBO series coming to an end Whelan talked about the fact that she knows the ending of the whole series, and how good it is that it’s coming to an end. The cast talked about their own Christmases fed into the chaos of the film.

Mubi's retrospective Outlaw Auteur: Joseph Losey is showing November 14 – December 26, 2018 in the United States. The ServantWisconsin-born Joseph Losey began his career in New York theater in 1933, where he quickly established himself, working alongside playwrights Sinclair Lewis and Bertolt Brecht as well as directing Charles Laughton. Turning to the silver screen in 1947, he directed his first feature, The Boy with Green Hair and worked consistently in Hollywood over the next several years, directing such films as a remake of M. Then The Red Scare hit and left Joseph Losey blacklisted. Blacklisted meant no work, and no work meant no money, so he left America, eventually settling in London. Interviewed a year prior to his passing, he spoke of the blacklisting: “Without it I would have three Cadillacs, two swimming pools and millions of dollars, and I’d be dead. It was terrifying. It was disgusting, but you can get trapped by money and complacency.

Performance, the 1970 British crime drama best known as Mick Jagger’s acting debut, had a challenging route to screen. But despite troubles with studio Warner Bros, the film, which defines the bohemian London of the 1960s, has gone on to be considered one of the best British films of all time.
A new book, Performance: The 50th Anniversary, written and compiled by Jay Glennie, tells the story of its chaotic production, gives a glimpse behind-the-scenes with over 500 images including many never seen before, and looks at its legacy through the eyes of star Jagger, as well as Nic Roeg, who directed the film alongside Donald Cammell and producer Sandy Lieberson. Glennie has given Deadline an exclusive look at the book, which is released via Coattail Publishing on December 1.
Jagger says, “It’s actually hard to believe that we’re still talking about the film 50 years later. Not many films stick around that long.
