There’s something inherently unsettling about teeth, and the addition of someone prodding at them with sharp instruments is especially invasive. On the other side of that coin, the negative association with dentistry can impact the professionals. Cult filmmaker Brian Yuzna tapped into these fundamental fears with his 1996 direct-to-video film, The Dentist, and its 1998 sequel, The Dentist 2.
In fact, Yuzna knew he could sell the movie based on the title alone, so he solicited writers to pitch him on the concept. It was his old pals Stuart Gordon and Dennis Paoli — for whom Yuzna had produced Re-Animator and From Beyond — that cracked the script. Charles Finch (who went on to executive produce David Cronenberg’s Spider) was later brought in to punch it up.
Continuing the underlying social commentary Yuzna explored with Society, the film centers on hot-headed dentist Alan Feinstone. After catching his wife (Linda Hoffman) going down...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

Diamond on Vinyl
Directed by J.R. Hughto
USA, 2013
When Beth (Nina Millin) discovers that her fiancé Henry (Brian McGuire) has been secretly recording themselves having sex, and more disputably, rehearsing his marriage proposal, she storms out of their celebratory hotel room and emotionally stays dominant in her car at a nearby parking lot. When a mysterious passerby named Charlie (Sonja Kinski, granddaughter of Klaus Kinski) takes interest in her ordeal, a seemingly romantic triangle emerges testing the plight of the couple’s meaning of love.
Beth takes a friendly liking to Charlie, possibly because of how distraught she is, and asks Charlie to return her key to the hotel front desk. Charlie’s curiosity leads her to their hotel room, introducing herself to Henry. After a brief confrontation, Henry and Charlie agree to meet up again for private recordings. As platonic and romantic intentions compete with one another, the film...

Sound Off: Hughto’s Film Explores Artificiality of Performance and Interaction to Varying Effect
It’s unfortunate that director J.R. Hughto’s sophomore effort, Diamond on Vinyl never quite keeps up the eerie tone it subtly cues for us. A metaphor that uses voyeurism to explore the artificiality of our interactions with those around us and the performances we play on a daily basis has the slight narrative asking questions too large to grapple with for its own purposes. An intricate sound design clues us in to the chronological time line, and we have to piece together the puzzle of events. If only some kind of discernible pay off by the final frame could have been created, then perhaps the ends would justify the means. Instead, we’re left wondering if maybe this shouldn’t have been a short film.

Helmer John Asher has managed to shoot Somebody Marry me, a feature-length comedy with just one shot. Apparently the historic 98 minute film took 18 days to write and 3 weeks of rehearsal with the cast prior to shooting the whole pic without a single cut. That's quite impressive. The Kimberly Stuckwisch and Ben Milliken-produced film which was funded and produced by independent film financier Lamar Billups, is a heartwarming romantic comedy with a twist. Starring is Oscar-nominated Michael Lerner (Barton Fink) and The Soprano’s Ray Abruzzo, with a supporting cast including Annie Burgstede, Jeff Doucette and Leslie Murphy, among others. In Somebody Marry Me, David Rosenberg has just a few hours to find a woman to marry before his wealthy father gives his entire inheritance to his young spoiled stepmother. After losing his girlfriend, David posts an ad online looking for a wife and quickly finds himself in over his head.

Castle's (Nathan Fillion) publisher, Paula (Debi Mazar) tells him about a new three book publishing deal to write about a 'British secret agent.' Castle has just launched his own character so why would he get involved with someone else's character? Then he realizes who that is and claims his entire reason for becoming a writer was this agent. His phone rings, Castle: "Another body must have dropped." Aptly put, seeing as the Db is found in a manhole. Perlmutter (Ayre Gross) puts Cod as blunt force trauma and she was killed two days ago. Ryan (Seamus Dever) asks if he can narrow it down. Castle arrives at the scene late and they tease him about the weird CODs he's just missed. Beckett (Stana Katic) joins in too, continuing on from last episode where she called him a pushover and seems he hasn't got the hint here either.

If Boxing Helena felt like a feminist parable conceived by a pretentious 19-year-old (which it actually was), Hisss feels like a 2nd attempt at a similar parable after the first one was laughed out of a creative writing class. Her confidence shaken, she opts not to attempt to bare her soul, but instead goes the safer route of updating a cultural fable to modern day, one which carries with it ripe material for ideas about gender dynamics and what not. After all, if you’re pretentious, you can’t just come out and tell a story about a snake lady eating people without at least the pretense that there is some subtext going on.

Remember back when a movie going direct-to-dvd usually meant it was going to suck? Well then ... what does it mean when a movie goes direct-to-Redbox? Pretty scary, huh?
For you curiosity seekers out there, yes, you can head to your local Redbox and find Jennifer Lynch's latest film, Hisss, sitting there waiting for your attention.
The flick star Mallika Sherawat, Irrfan Khan, Jeff Douchette, Divya Dutta, and Raman Trikha.
If you remember right, things did not go well on this flick at all...
"Hisss was taken away from me in the edit," said Lynch during an update from a few months ago. "I have no idea what the film looks like. I came close to a director’s cut, which Mallika, Venus and producers (Govind Menon and Vikram Singh) referred to as ‘European, languid and sensual’, all the things I thought were compliments. Apparently, that did not make them happy.

A debutante director of Indian origin, Radhika Chaudhari from Los Angeles, has bagged the prestigious Silver Ace Award for Best Short Film at the Las Vegas Film Festival, for her critically acclaimed short film Orange Blossom.Shot in L.A. in a span of four days , the 17-minute film is the story of a single mother going through the pangs of separation from her husband; while making the folly of passing on too much information about herself and her family to a few strangers. While an American-Indian Usha Kokotay plays the protagonist, other key roles are deftly portrayed by seasoned Hollywood actors such as Jeff Doucette (of Bedazzled and Desperate Housewives fame) and John Paul Ouvrier..The award is a big high for me, especially as I am a first-time director,. says Radhika Chaudhari. .Its put me on this pedestal from where the whole world looks like an unconquered challenge about to be discovered,...

[Last night I went out to see Hisss, starring Mallika Sherawat. Despite what the local theater's website indicated, there were no English subtitles. I did, however, sit through the whole film, and I know that I picked up on it enough to make some remarks, though this should in no way be considered a comprehensive review.]
First thing's first, I owe this to you:
I am sorry. Mea Culpa.
I am sorry if my continuing and enthusiastic coverage of Hisss actually inspired anyone to make the trip out to the theater and spend their hard earned money. I would offer to refund it myself, but I'm not financially able to do that right now. First, a quick synopsis:
As the story goes, the movie is about the Vengeance of Naagin, the Snake Woman when the legend of the Naagin has been spreading for over 4000 years ago. Finally in 2009 George States (Jeff Douchette), a ruthless American travels to the jungles of India and captures her mate. She transforms into a stunningly attractive woman (Mallika Sherawat) with absolutely no clue about contemporary civilization or the ways of mankind, and ventures into the city in desperate search for her lover with vengeance on her mind and venom in her fangs.

A film like Hisss filled with special effects and a rather situational plot cannot be easy to make. Hisss villain Jeff Doucette, who found himself a part of many stunts found himself challenging himself during the shooting of the film. "The hardest thing was the physicality of my character. I had to beat people up, get stuffed into a harness and I had to walk around for almost two weeks covered in blood- sticky nasty fake blood. I had to literally peel my clothes off at the end of the day," he revealed.
Divulging scene details, he explained how he had to push himself to certain limits while working on Hisss. "During one scene Irrfan Khan and I were fighting, and he had to grab my lapels and pull me up. In take after take he grabbed my lapels, but he also grabbed a fistful of my chest hair. Five...

With Hisss only days away from release, critics and audiences are curious about a film that has been featured at most film festivals and has generated much hype. Hisss villain, Jeff Doucette, is convinced that the film will work both in India and around the world. "A good story will be accepted everywhere. But we kept saying as we were making the film that this is not your grandmother's Nagin story. So it will be interesting to see how India reacts to this version of the story. This is Jennifer's [Lynch] take on the ancient legend," he explains. And while the story is essentially Indian, the execution is completely Hollywood with special effects. "Hisss is more of an American film of an Indian legend. There are a lot of special effects. It's moodier and more dangerous. I hate snakes. Really, really hate them. I can’t stand the sight of them slithering about. Totally freaks me out. So you can imagine that as strangely seductive as I find this trailer for Jennifer Chambers Lynch’s “Hisss”, it also freaks me the hell out. Is it a horror movie? An erotic thriller? An action-adventure? More like horror-creature feature, with a woman who turns into a half-woman, half-snake thing that goes around tasting on men. Yum. Based on the Far Eastern myth of the snake woman who is able to take on human form. Starring Irrfan Khan, Mallika Sherawat, Divya Dutta, and Jeff Doucette. Written and directed by Jennifer Chambers Lynch (”Boxing Helena”). Trailer and image via RopeofSilicon.

After a low-res "leaked" version of the trailer for Hisss took the 'net by storm recently and sent the producers out for blood, the production just sent Fango the official version., along with a new photo.
Hisss is a modern day retelling of the ancient tale of the ichhadahari nagin (snake woman) and follows a ruthless American, fascinated by the ancient folklore of the mythical creature, who travels to the jungles of India to discover the truth. He finds and captures the nagin’s mate for the magical powers of its nagmani, a mythical gem embedded in its hood. The nagin then transforms into a gorgeous femme fatale and follows him back into the modern world to track down her lover and wreak revenge on his captors and all who stand in the way of their reunion.

Welcome to the first installment of a new column here at Fangoria.com, Back Catalogue. Sometimes the Catalogue will cover new releases of older films, and sometimes it will feature exactly what the title implies, back catalogue items. These will normally be from smaller specialty labels that have formed the backbone of the horror fans ability to build a truly representative collection of their favorite films. I'm proud to start this column back up after a two year hiatus and promise to work hard to recommend films that you're in danger of forgetting about, have maybe never heard of, or that might be ready to go out of print.
I'm also proud that the first edition of Catalogue is all about Synapse Films. Anybody who goes to conventions and has stopped by the Synapse table has not only seen first hand the amazing array of labor of love releases and Special Editions they produce,...

Regular Fango readers know that the Bollywood horror film Hisss is one we've been looking forward to for quite some time.

Earlier this week we pointed you in the direction of the Fearsome Fango Film Show Line-Up for the upcoming Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors running April 17-19, 2009. Now that the full event schedule is live, we thought we'd point out a few "choice cuts" (i.e., those panels that we here at Dread Central are either moderating, participating in, or just generally think you shouldn't miss).
Note: All guests/events listed are tentative. More stars are still joining the fun at this late stage, so expect lots of surprises all weekend long. And for the first time ever, there will be a second track of programming that will take place concurrently with the main track on Saturday and Sunday!
