Seventeen years after we last followed historian, cryptographer, and treasure hunter Benjamin Franklin Gates (played by Nicolas Cage) on an adventure, we might finally be getting a new sequel to the 2004 film National Treasure and its 2007 follow-up National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets. Although producer Jerry Bruckheimer said two years ago that there was a “really good” script in place and awaiting Cage’s approval, it must not have met his approval, because screenwriter Ted Elliott revealed to the National Treasure Hunt podcast that he has been working on the project for the last year and recently completed his first draft of the script.
During his interview on the podcast, Elliott confirmed that his script is complete and ready for revisions and teased that he has written “familiar faces” into the story beyond the returning main characters of Ben Gates, computer expert and author Riley Poole (Justin Bartha), Dr. Abigail...

Michael Keaton takes on another hitman role in his new directorial venture, Knox Goes Away. Keaton played a hitman in his directorial debut, The Merry Gentleman, in 2008. The Batman actor revealed that he wouldn’t have taken on the script by Gregory Poirier if he thought the film would not hold up. For Keaton, the film was like a game of Jenga, where every piece had to work for the movie to work.

Michael Keaton’s Knox Goes Away begins with hired killer John “Aristotle” Knox (Keaton) in his car, cruising through the night to the sound of a mournful saxophone. It seems like we’re gearing up for one of those long, dark nights of the soul that neo-noir thrillers thrive on, but the film proves unwilling to really drive forward into the darkness. In the end, it’s a tale of male alienation that’s a little too afraid of alienating its audience.
Knox lives alone, only interacting with other members of his morbid industry and Annie (Joanna Kulig), the Polish sex worker who comes to visit him once a week. He carries out each of his jobs with cold precision, before then stashing the money he earns with the utmost care. It’s the perfect role for Keaton, given his unique intermingling of intensity and offbeat charm, and he benefits...

Plot: A hitman, Knox (Michael Keaton), discovers he has a fast-acting form of dementia and only has weeks of lucidity left. Shortly after this diagnosis, in a moment of confusion, he botches a hit, killing both his partner and a civilian. As if that weren’t bad enough, his estranged son (James Marsden) shows up on his doorstep needing help covering up a murder.
Review: Knox Goes Away has a premise that’s becoming increasingly popular: an aging killer develops dementia and must put things right while he can. Liam Neeson played a similarly afflicted killer in Memory last year (itself a remake), and Nicolas Cage played another character like this in The Dying of the Light. Neither of those films was great because they focused on everything but the protagonist’s condition. Knox Goes Away is different. Michael Keaton, who also directs (from a script by Gregory Poirier), focuses...

You wanna get nuts? C’mon, let’s get nuts. Through no fault of his own, Michael Keaton’s fun, nostalgic return as Batman had imploded when The Flash would debut to disaster and his follow-up in Batgirl would equally become infamous by getting shelved and locked away. Keaton is bouncing back in a big way with his second directorial effort, Knox Goes Away. Keaton’s directorial debut came in 2008 with the crime thriller, The Merry Gentleman. The trailer for Knox Goes Away has dropped courtesy of Saban Films and features a quote from our own Chris Bumbray, which was also featured on the poster, which says Keaton gives “A career-best performance.”

Michael Keaton’s second film as director, Knox Goes Away, is heading to cinemas in 2024. More details here.
He’s been having fun of late in front of the camera, not least his cameo in this year’s The Flash, where he reprised the role of Batman. But Michael Keaton has also taken the opportunity to return to directing.

Keaton takes on the role of John Knox in the film, as well as stepping behind the camera. He’s attracted a good cast too, with Al Pacino, James Marsden and Marcia Gay Harden amongst the ensemble. The protagonist of Knox Goes Away, starring and directed by Michael Keaton, is one of the most low-energy hired killers in cinema history. There’s reason for this: early on audiences discover that John Knox is suffering from a form of dementia––one that moves much faster than Alzheimer’s, he is told––that will cause him to start losing his memory in a matter of “weeks, not months.” That news would be difficult for anyone, but it’s especially problematic for someone whose livelihood depends on his abilities to act decisively, move covertly, and always cover his tracks.
So it’s not going to be easy for Knox to finish off his career as a hitman and cash out. Worse yet it’s also not easy for audiences to become invested in that process. Knox Goes Away is a sub-par effort that may prove of interest to fans of the actor,...

“Knox Goes Away” is a silky and entrancing thriller directed by its star, Michael Keaton — but as soon as I heard the film’s premise, I’ll admit I was skeptical. Keaton plays an underworld hit man who is diagnosed with dementia. That sounds a bit trendy, and more than that it sounds like a stunt premise. One almost automatically envisions it in somewhat comic terms. But “Knox Goes Away” doesn’t traffic in comedy — or exaggerated reality. In addition to being a noir that holds you exactly the way a noir should, it may be one of the best dramas about dementia I’ve ever seen.

Editor’s Note: This review was originally published at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Saban Films will release “Knox Goes Away” in select theaters March 15, 2024.
There’s a strong concept and framework to “Knox Goes Away,” in which Michael Keaton directs himself as a hitman with a rare, fast-escalating form of dementia. But it’s is undercut by stilted dialogue and a stultified pace that turns what could have been a fun thriller into an experience that’s sometimes laughably plodding.
Keaton apparently loves to cast himself as assassins with hearts of gold and emotional turmoil, given that he played a similar character in his previous directorial effort “The Merry Gentlemen,” which was released in 2009. Here, he’s John Knox, a L.A.-based gun for hire with an intellectual bent, who learns in the first minutes of the film that he is suffering from Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, giving him only...

I've never been much of a superhero movie fan, but one I'd have gladly queued up for back in the 1990s would have been Tim Burton directing Nicolas Cage in "Superman Lives." Along with Alejandro Jodorowsky's wildly ambitious non-starter "Dune," it must go down as one of the greatest what-ifs in cinema history, especially during that period of their respective careers.
"Mars Attacks!" aside, Burton was still regularly making great movies back then, with his unmistakable visual style and penchant for weirdos and outsiders like himself. Cage, on the other hand, was the maverick who made good with his Oscar-winning performance in "Leaving Las Vegas" before transforming himself into one of the decade's biggest action stars.
As for Superman, the time was right for a reinvention after the huge success of Burton's two "Batman" movies. The original "Superman" franchise, which had made audiences believe a man could fly since...

DC fans have been eagerly anticipating the return of Michael Keaton as Batman in ... well, he was supposed to appear in the canceled "Batgirl," but as far as we know right now, no one will get to look at that. All signs point to the release of "The Flash" — despite the troubling issues with its star Ezra Miller — where Keaton will don the suit of the caped crusader, but nothing is 100 percent right now. While some of us (me ... it's me) are praying to the comic book gods that Keaton's Batman will indeed return, we do have something of his to look forward to.
Michael Keaton will be making his directorial debut in the upcoming noir thriller "Knox Goes Away," which he will also star in. Principal photography has already wrapped on the film, according to Deadline. He's got some drama-heavy hitters involved, including Al Pacino, but also comedy stars like the brilliant Suzy Nakamura.

Michael Keaton’s revival of his Batman may have hit delays and snags, but the actor’s dramatic career is still steady as he has stepped behind the camera to direct his second feature with Knox Goes Away. Keaton is coming in hot off his Emmy win for the dramatic Hulu series, Dopesick, and will also be starring in the film noir. Principal photography has reportedly already been completed.

In director Mark Raso’s occasionally engaging but mostly frustrating sci-fi thriller, an unexplained event causes a massive electromagnetic pulse that fries most electronics and leaves nearly all of humanity incapable of sleep. From the mysterious incident onward, the characters slowly slide toward insanity as fatigue takes its toll, although it’s not clear how everyone on earth immediately recognizes (or believes) that the resulting restlessness is permanent. If the recent real-world pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that early in a health crisis, nobody knows anything, and the resulting confusion tends to be more exhausting than entertaining.
So, at the risk of sounding facetious, I confess that while exasperated ex-military, ex-junkie super-mom Jill (Gina Rodriguez) worries about whether she’ll ever be able to sleep again, I had no such problem. Between its low-energy suspense and all-around failure to grip, “Awake” took me three separate sittings to get through.

Editor’S Note: Much was written about maverick Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton when he died early last year. In the wake of the George Floyd murder, there are several treatments of the Black Wall Street atrocity in the offing, but Singleton and Gregory Poirier had the field all to themselves when they collaborated on Rosewood, a drama woven from historic events of the 1923 Rosewood massacre in Florida, when a white mob killed black people and destroyed their town. Not many could have gotten such a movie made by a major studio back in 1997, but Singleton directed it for Warner Bros. It has taken Poirier, who won the WGA Paul Selvin Award for his work, time to find a handle on his own complicated relationship with Singleton, and that is what makes this guest column most poignant.

Action movie veteran Sylvester Stallone is gearing up for a huge 12 months.
As we learned back in April, the former Rocky star has agreed to headline Rambo 5, which is currently targeting a theatrical release this September. And as if that wasn’t enough nostalgia for you, Deadline brings word today that Sylvester Stallone is officially locked in for The Expendables 4 ahead of its own launch early next year.
Stallone has been linked with the action sequel for months – if not years – though the actor’s alleged fallout with Nu Image/Millennium chairman Avi Lerner cast doubt over a possible fourth appearance from the cigar-chomping Barney Ross. But even if there were traces of bad blood, it seems all is well in The Expendables camp. Which is just as well, considering filming on the star-studded blockbuster is expected to kick off this summer in Bulgaria.

Not to be outdone by Tim Miller’s redo of The Terminator, it’s looking increasingly likely that The Expendables 4 is gearing up for a summer shoot in Bulgaria.
At least, that’s according to Toll Road himself, Randy Couture, who told The Arnold Fans (h/t Screen Rant) that filming is due to commence in August – assuming Sylvester Stallone and his army of old-school action heroes can stick to the current schedule.
A late summer start date would surely place The Expendables 4 on course for a release late next year; however, as screenwriter Gregory Poirier is currently the only creative person attached to the balls-to-the-walls action sequel – that we know of, mind you – there’s still a lot of things that need to be ironed out before Stallone’s rumored follow-up can get off the ground.

This is really interesting. ABC is currently developing a new series based on the Derrick Storm mystery novels that were written by the fictional character Richard Castle, who is played by Nathan Fillion in the fantastic drama Castle.
I love this show, and it's really kind of meta that they are making a sort of spin-off series based on a fictional character that comes from a fictional book from a fictional author.
One thing that I didn't realize until recently was that those Derrick Storm novels that have been referenced on Castle have actually been published in real life under the name of Richard Castle. Those book are also on best-seller status! That is both really weird, yet cool. For those of you not familiar with Derrick Storm, he is a spy who gets called on by the CIA to help them with mysterious missions.

Today, in ‘Sentences I Never Thought I’d Write,’ ABC is preparing to melt your brain. No, it’s not planning to stream episodes of Revenge directly into your cranium on an endless loop – rather, it is beginning development on a new drama that will be a spinoff from Castle – one of its most popular shows currently on air. But, this is not just your average spinoff, where the show expands to a different city while following the same worn-out format, like CSI. This is mind-bending branching-out, based on the fictional literary character of a series of fictional novels, written by the fictional lead character of Castle. This is a Derrick Storm show.

On ABC's hugely successful series "Castle," best-selling author Richard Castle (played by geek hero Nathan Fillion) pens a series of novels featuring a spy character named Derrick Storm. The uncannily synergistic ABC has, in turn, published a series of novels in real life, written by "Richard Castle" and featuring the Derrick Storm character. An army of "Castle" loyalists has turned these books, written by some very wealthy ghostwriters, into actual best-selling novels (all with titles involving the word "Storm"). And now those books are being turned into a television series, according to Variety.

This has got to me one of the more meta spin-offs (but not actually spin-offs) in the history of television, should the pilot (being written by Gregory Poirier and executive produced by "Castle" creator Andrew Marlowe and his production partner/wife Terri Edda Miller) go to series. Quite frankly, we're still trying to figure it out.
