Heading into the Seal Team series finale, Bravo 1, Jason Hayes (David Boreanaz), has been tasked with an assignment from way above command, separating him from his brothers: to take out traitor Curtis (Mac Brandt). Drew (Beau Knapp), who does his best work in the moral gray area, goes with him. “As he says to Ray, there’s a reason Jason realizes why they tasked him with this—because command, much like how Jason sees himself, sees him as a killer,” executive producer Spencer Hudnut tells TV Insider. “Also, Curtis is a figure whom [Jason] sees so much of himself in, mostly for worse. And so I think he’s definitely considering the gravity of the situation.” He continues, “I mean, to take out another American, but also someone whom Jason, I think, recognizes was failed by the same system that failed Swanny [Tony Curran], that’s failed so many of Jason’s other teammates,...

In the third episode of the Starz limited series “Mary & George,” Julianne Moore’s Mary, Countess of Buckingham, who is hell-bent on amassing power among the royal ranks, makes her first visit to the court of King James I (Tony Curran). When she arrives in a garish purple silk gown, her face painted a ghastly white and cheeks crudely rouged like a clown, the courtiers point and laugh. Absorbing their scornful looks, she makes her way to Lady Hatton, a formidable adversary played by Nicola Walker, who quips, “Who dressed you? A prostitute?”
Well, yes, in fact.
Nicola Walker (center) (Starz)
In an earlier scene, we see Mary’s sex worker confidante Sandie (Niamh Algar) help her get into costume. Mary is no fool. Though it’s never spelled out explicitly, it is strongly suggested that she plotted her fashion faux pas to attract the attention of the king...

Julianne Moore seems to be having a blast in limited series “Mary & George” (Starz). But carrying a seven-part period royal dramedy is not easy. The Oscar-winning film actress (“Still Alice”) rarely does television (“Lisey’s Story”) — she started her career as a regular on “As the World Turns” — but Mary Villiers, the Machiavellian court-scheming mother of the series, was irresistible.
Moore was attracted to showrunner D.C. Moore’s scripts, she said during a recent interview with IndieWire over Zoom. “That very first scene where you find her giving birth to this child and saying, ‘Why should I keep you? Your life’s gonna be worthless?’ was arresting,” Moore said.
“The character leapt off the page,” she continued. “This person who didn’t seem to have any kind of filter at all. She speaks everything that she’s feeling, which is unusual. It had this tone to it that was almost comedic at times,...

“I did a play years ago called ‘Mary Queen of Scots Got Her Head Chopped Off,’ about Mary Queen of Scots, who was King James’ mother,” reveals BAFTA nominee Tony Curran, who plays King James I in the Starz Limited series “Mary and George.” “In that play I played King James’ father, Lord Darnley, who got assassinated, got blown up. So, I knew a bit about his history. He never really had a mother because she was taken away by Queen Elizabeth when he was a baby and she was imprisoned before she was executed. Having your mother decapitated and your father assassinated, it was a bit of a tough start for old King James.”

France has never had trouble getting people to fall in love with its many pleasures: the Eiffel Tower, the Palace of Versailles, the Louvre, and the island majesty of Mont Saint-Michel. It sells itself, which is probably why it is such a sought-after backdrop for television series.
But in the last year, France has been shown even more love than usual, as more than half a dozen shows, all vying for Emmy attention this season, explored the country through the ages. And no, this wasn’t some elaborate promotion for the upcoming 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
From the 1600s to the modern day to a post-zombie apocalypse future, no cultural stone went unturned on TV this year, giving viewers even more reason to book their next (hopefully zombie-free) vacation.

[This story contains spoilers from the series finale of Mary & George.]
Nicholas Galitzine likens the story of George Villiers — the dashing Duke of Buckingham he plays in Mary & George, based on the real-life lover of King James I of England — to that of Icarus, the Greek mythological character whose unbridled ego and ambition led to his untimely end.
Across seven episodes of the bawdy and soapy Starz period drama, George transforms, under the tutelage of his cunning mother Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), from a callow young adult into the de facto ruler of England, who uses his close connection to the mercurial monarch (Tony Curran) to advance his own political agenda.
In the series finale, George’s insatiable lust for power reaches a point of no return. After negotiations break down in the proposed marriage between James’ son, Prince Charles (Samuel Blenkin), and Infanta Maria Anna of Spain over Charles’ refusal to convert from Protestantism to Catholicism, George...

Following its huge success with Red, White & Royal Blue, the adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestseller, which last year came in as one of its top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time, Amazon MGM Studios has greenlighted development on a sequel, with stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez set to return.
After making his feature debut with the first film, Matthew López has returned to write the script for the sequel — this time, alongside McQuiston. Berlanti Schechter Films’ Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter will return to produce the film, joined by the banner’s Michael McGrath, as well as López. McQuiston will executive produce.
Released last August, Red, White & Royal Blue follows Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez), who upon his mother’s (Uma Thurman) election as President, is promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, brilliant — his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House.

Vampires and werewolves are big business in mainstream media, with a veritable feast of TV shows and movies being dedicated to the mythical creatures across the decades. So when something comes along that slots straight into the mainstream zeitgeist with its gothic visuals and sexy vampires fighting pesky swearwolves, you know what’s coming next. Yup, sequels and prequels! As mentioned in our previous episode that sunk its teeth into the fun but flawed Underworld from 2003, director Len Wiseman found love with his leading lady, Kate Beckinsale. And, if you’re being massively cynical, you could perhaps suggest that their star-struck Hollywood romance is one of the main reasons a follow-up to the first movie was green-lit. Or maybe it was the decent box-office, cool world-building or maybe even the lashings of S&m clad characters? The first movie, as we discussed previously, is flawed and far from perfect but you know what,...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Mary & George Episode 4, “The Wolf & The Lamb.”] Tony Curran‘s King James gave his heart to George Villiers in Mary & George Episode 4… literally. The Scottish King of England brought Nicholas Galitzine‘s George to his homeland for the purpose of digging up the embalmed heart of his first great love, Lord Lennox, encased in an iron ring. Lennox and James had the same age difference as James and George, viewers learned in the Friday, April 26 episode. James learned a lot from his older lover, though everyone around him at the time feared that the love wasn’t real between them, that James was being used. But their concern wasn’t for James’ true wellbeing, rather for the sake of the monarch and how his wellbeing affects everybody else. James fears that no one can love him as deeply and truly as Lennox, but he pours his heart out to...

[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for Mary & George Episode 4, “The Wolf & The Lamb.”] James and George’s romance reached the pinnacle of intimacy in Mary & George Episode 4. The episode saw James (Tony Curran) return to Scotland for the first time since he became King of England, his new lover, George (Nicholas Galitzine), in tow. While George can’t help himself from cheating, James is his most tender yet, and Curran delivers his best performance of the series in the episode. James is on edge throughout the episode’s first act. His irritation and unrest are on full display when he bites George’s arm, breaking the skin, and when he plunges himself into a river in Scotland. He’s imploding after the death of Somerset (Laurie Davidson), feeling as if he can’t trust anyone, especially George. And in truth, George is extremely untrustworthy. He’s loving and doting in the room with James, but...

Many romances on TV take a long time to blossom. Known as “slow burns,” these kinds of relationships develop gradually, letting the chemistry between the characters grow and the obvious tension simmer until the writers let the two finally, finally get together. Sometimes it’s all about the long game.
This definitely isn’t the case for Mary & George, which dives straight into its whirlwind romance. The limited historical drama series, which premiered April 5 on Starz, centers on the relationship between George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham (Nicholas Galitzine) and King James VI and I (Tony Curran). The show is based in part on Benjamin Wooley’s 2017 non-fiction book The King’s Assassin, which chronicles the real-life 1600s affair between the two men. Spanning just seven episodes in total, the series wastes no time getting right to the crux of the story — but to be fair, this is no ordinary romance.

George is trekking through the English countryside on horseback with all the king’s men in the clip from the upcoming episode, airing Friday, April 12 at 9/8c on Starz. They’re hunting for game, but George is hunting for James’ attention. “Can you hunt as well as you dance?” James asks. “Not even close,” George replies in French. In Mary & George, the newest co-production from Starz and Sky, there is more than one way to gain power, but everyone seems happiest to choose the hottest option.
Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore) is broke and has no way to support her family or provide good marriages for her children. With her first-born being an irredeemable dolt, she focuses on molding her second-born, the achingly beautiful George (Nicholas Galitzine), into the perfect gentleman for a unique partner: King James VI/I (Tony Curran.) The Scottish monarch has just taken over the English throne, leaving a scramble for control among his many hangers-on and wannabe advisors. He is also, as one bystander acidly notes, "a dead-eyed, horny-handed horror who surrounds himself with many deceitful well-hung beauties." What better way to secure the Villiers family fortune than through the King’s bed?...

In 2018, while flicking through the LGBTQ+ section of a copy of Time Out magazine, television producer Liza Marshall found a listing for a lecture about the sexuality of James VI and I, who reigned as the king of Scotland from 1567 to 1625 and, following the death of Queen Elizabeth I, also became the first Stuart king of England from 1603 to 1625. Despite having studied history during college, Marshall was surprised to discover that James had three significant relationships with men in his lifetime — the last of which forms the basis of the new historical drama Mary & George, which premiered Friday on Starz.
“It’s fair to say, at the beginning of the process, nobody wanted to make this show. No one knows anything about the Jacobean era,” Marshall tells The Hollywood Reporter of the 22 years that James spent as the ruler of both England and Scotland. “We know about Elizabeth I,...

Nicholas Galitzine had a tough time filming Mary & George.
In the upcoming Starz limited series, Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore) encourages her son, George (Galitzine), to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and become his “all-powerful lover.”
Galitzine ended up breaking his ankle in the dance and fighting scenes on the first day of the shoot.
“There were these heeled shoes that you see characters wearing a lot,” he explained. “These stately homes have very slippery floors. While filming the scene in the first episode where I run and tackle this serving boy, my ankle slipped [and twisted] a full 90 degrees inward. I fractured my ankle and had to continue doing stunts the next couple days and then was dancing on it.”
Despite the injury, he pushed through because filming had just begun. He wore riding boots so the splint on his ankle was covered.

Early in Mary & George, George Villiers (Nicholas Galitzine) halfheartedly attempts suicide in protest of his family’s refusal to let him marry the lowborn Jenny (Emily Fairn), despite his insistences that she’s no mere servant girl “in my heart.” When his mother, Mary (Julianne Moore), finds him, however, she reacts not with worry, but annoyance. “That’s not how it works. That’s not how a single thing fucking works,” she snaps. “Are you five?”

A mother pimping out her son? Not quite a story you hear every day, but historically accurate nonetheless.
Julianne Moore and Nicholas Galitzine lead limited series “Mary and George” as the titular Mary Villiers, Countess of Buckingham, and her son George, who together set out to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) and well, penetrate the throne.
While the trailer quickly was turned into viral GIFs courtesy of Galitzine and Curran’s steamy scenes, it’s Oscar winner Moore’s performance that has turned critics’ heads, according to reviews for the series. The Guardian called the series “magnificent” in part due to its “narrative rigor of ‘The Favourite,’ the disciplined panache of ‘The Great,’ just a dash of ‘The Tudors’’ excess and enough sex to keep ‘Bridgerton’ fans happy too.” Those risqué scenes range from queer group sex, royal orgies, and Moore’s “monster” of a mother who still serves...

It doesn't take an expert in 17th-century English history to see why period piece Mary & George was snapped up by Starz after it was dropped by AMC late last year. The British drama is right at home on the premium cabler, where shows like Outlander and The Serpent Queen offer sexually explicit takes on major historical events, and various Power spin-offs take a hard look at the cost of ambition. D.C. Moore's Mary & George seeks to do both as it dramatizes the true story of Mary Villiers (Julianne Moore), who schemed her way into King James' (Tony Curran) court by molding her son George (Nicholas Galitzine) to be the King's lover.

“Mary & George” is the delicious new historical drama from British playwright D.C. Moore, who swaps out stuffy history lessons for a raucous, bawdy ride that fans of “The Favourite” will love. Like that Oscar-winning movie, this limited series on Starz focuses on an era of British royalty that is little-known to American audiences.
Julianne Moore plays the Countess of Buckingham, who groomed her son (Nicholas Galitzine) to seduce King James I (Tony Curran) in an attempt to curry favor, power, titles, and riches in 1600s England.
