Boogiemen come in all shapes and sizes. They hide beneath your bed, lurk in shadows, and patiently wait to devour you from the depths of your closet. Children try to avoid them at all costs, but now and then, one is so determined to sink its pointed teeth into your tasty meats that it’ll ignore every ward and warning to claim its prize. Today’s Bagman trailer features a sinister ghoul who snatches children and stuffs them into a haunted bag, like Krampus’s kleptomaniac cousin.
Here’s the official synopsis for Bagman courtesy of Lionsgate:

The romantic comedy, which is an adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s bestselling novel, launched on Prime Video on August 11 and has now become the No. 1 movie globally on Prime Video in its premiere weekend.
It is also now among Prime Video’s top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time, according to Amazon, which wouldn’t disclose the two other films Red, White & Royal Blue would be joining in the top three.
Amazon is also touting “a huge surge in new Prime membership signups” due to the film’s release. The company didn’t say how they determined this, though this generally measured as the title was the first one an account watched after subscribing to a streaming service.

Prime Video has debuted the trailer for the comedy ‘Red, White and Royal Blue.’
Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine) have a lot in common: Stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity … and total disdain for each other. Separated by an ocean, their long-running feud hasn’t really been an issue, until a disastrous—and very public—altercation at a royal event becomes tabloid fodder, driving a potential wedge in U.S./British relations at the worst possible time. Going into damage-control mode, their families and handlers force the two rivals into a staged “truce.” But as Alex and Henry’s icy relationship unexpectedly begins to thaw into a tentative friendship, the friction that existed between them sparks something deeper than they ever expected.

Romance is getting the royal touch in the first trailer for the long-awaited adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s book “Red, White, & Royal Blue.”
The trailer certainly makes a point of laying out the various peaks and valleys of the plot, introducing Alex Claremont-Diaz (Taylor Zakhar Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman) and Britain’s Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine). After an international incident involving a wedding cake happens the two are forced to engage in a staged friendship. But the more time they spend together the pair realizes that what started as animosity is turning to love.
The bright, colorful tone, coupled with its adaptation bona fides makes it look akin to other Prime Video fare like “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” There’s also a healthy dose of 1953’s “Roman Holiday,” especially with this film’s emphasis on a royal deciding between love...

The hearts of two nations collide in the first look at Prime Video’s adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s 2019 young adult LGBTQ romance Red, White & Royal Blue.
Co-written by Ted Malawer and Tony-winner Matthew López, the upcoming summer rom-com serves as López’s directorial debut and sees stars Taylor Zakhar Perez and Nicholas Galitzine portray the sons of U.S. and U.K. leaders, unexpectedly falling in love before grappling with the international implications of their relationship.
In the nearly two-minute first look, Alex Claremont-Diaz (Perez), the son of the President of the United States (Uma Thurman), and Britain’s Prince Henry (Galitzine) discover that despite having so much in common — stunning good looks, undeniable charisma, international popularity — they can’t quite escape their total disdain for one another.

2023 Drama League Awards winners: Annaleigh Ashford (‘Sweeney Todd’) takes Distinguished Performance
Winners of the 2023 Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 19, 2023, at an in-person ceremony, hosted by Emmy-winning reporter Frank Dilella at The Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2022-2023 theater season.
“Leopoldstadt” asserted itself as the dominant play of the season, picking up the Best Play prize. Tom Stoppard’s drama has been perched atop Gold Derby’s Tony Awards odds since we launched the prediction center. With Tony favorite “Kimberly Akimbo” out of the running for Best Musical (the Drama League already considered that tuner for its Off-Broadway run), “Some Like it Hot” cruised to a win in that category. It prevailed over four of its fellow Tony nominees: “& Juliet,” “New York, New York,” and “Shucked.”

The 2023 Tony Awards nominations featured a number of snubs and surprises, including an unexpected six nods for Ain’t No Mo, which closed shortly before the end of 2022 despite a star-studded effort to keep it going.
It seems Tony voters well remembered this fall’s productions, handing out five nods for Cost of Living, which closed in November, and three for KPop, which closed in December.
Another surprise was the strong showing by corn-centric musical Shucked, which landed nine nods.
But Tony voters surprisingly left out a few stars in more recently opened productions: Neither Oscar Isaac nor Rachel Brosnahan were nominated for their leading roles in The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, and neither Danielle Brooks nor John David Washington were nominated for The Piano Lesson, with director Latanya Richardson Jackson not nominated for directing.
Other well-known stars not nominated include Laura Linney, not nominated for her role in Summer,...

Some of the biggest names of Broadway (and Hollywood) won’t be receiving those phone calls of congratulations today as this morning’s Tony Awards nominations included more than a few surprising — or, in some cases, not surprising — omissions.
Aaron Sorkin, whose rewritten book for the classic musical Camelot was not beloved by critics, didn’t get any Tony approval today. His revisions were extensive enough to make him eligible in the Best Book of a Musical category, but he is not among the nominees.
As for lead actors and actresses, Oscar Isaac and Rachel Brosnahan, the bold-name stars of The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, were overlooked, as was The Piano Lesson‘s John David Washington and Pictures From Home‘s Nathan Lane. Marcel Spears, the star of the acclaimed Fat Ham, was not nominated, nor was Olivier Award winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi). Jefferson Mays, so...

With 38 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Tuesday morning. Among the most surprising 2023 Tony nominations snubs was “Life of Pi” for Best Play. The production earned nine Olivier Award nominations across the pond, winning Best New Play, Actor (Hiran Abeysekera), Featured Actor, Lighting Design and Set Design. But at the Tonys, it missed out on a Best Play bid and didn’t score a nomination for Abeysekera. The production did perform well in the design categories, though, earning five nominations including for director Max Webster.

“Out of all the Tony categories this season, this could be the most complicated,” notes Sam Eckmann about the race for the top Broadway honor of Best Play. It’s a sentiment we share about Best Play Revival, too, as we discuss our final predictions for the upcoming 76th Tony Awards nominations. All told, 23 productions will contend for slots in categories honoring the best dramatic works of the year, which will be announced on May 2. Watch the full video slugfest above.

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

Tony Awards voters will not have to see every nominated performer or show to vote in that category this season, according to a new rule from the Tony Award Administration Committee.
The rule change, put in place for the 2022-2023 season only, will allow a voter to still vote in a category if they have missed one nominated show, one performance by a nominated actor or actress and one creative element (i.e. lighting or scenic design) per category.
This would mean that a voter could, for example, still vote for best play or best musical even if they had not seen one of the nominated productions and to vote in the best actor and best actress categories without having seen one of the performers.
The Tony Awards did not give a reason for the why this change was made for this season, but cited situations in which there were...

The Tony Awards Administration Committee has announced its first round of eligibility rulings for this Broadway season, determining some of the trickier potential nominees and their respective categories.
Both co-stars of The Collaboration – Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope – will be considered eligible in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play, rather than split up into leading and featured slots. Ohio State Murders, written by Adrienne Kennedy in 1991 and performed regionally but never on Broadway until this season, will be considered a revival in keeping with similar rulings in recent years about Broadway debuts of older shows such as The Boys in The Band.
Perhaps among the more surprising rulings is for Sharon D Clarke, who played Linda Loman opposite Wendell Pierce’s Willy Loman in Miranda Cromwell’s Death of a Salesman revival. Clarke will be eligible as a Featured Actress rather than Leading.

At the last Grammys, the presumed front-runner for Best Musical Theater Album didn’t end up winning. “Les Misérables: The Staged Concert” was out front to win according to Gold Derby’s racetrack odds, but lost in a big upset to “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.” So what could that mean for this year’s race?

An unhinged and disruptive woman stopped Broadway’s “Death of a Saleman” Tuesday night, finally being escorted from the theater by police. It’s safe to say she was not well-liked by the audience.
The incident happened at the Hudson Theatre on 44th Street. Patrons reported on social media that she was behaving badly during Act 1 of the three-hour play, heckling and generally breaking the spell of the performance. Eventually, star Wendell Pierce tried to reason with the heckler from the foot of the stage.
“He patiently & heroically pleaded with her to leave peacefully despite her insistence that she should be carried out forcefully (she was eventually escorted out by police),” said Instagram user Rubinbooty.
Social media commenters said the woman and a companion appeared to be leaving at intermission. However, she returned full-force and allegedly issued a warning.

Fans of the extraordinary Audra McDonald have had a long wait for her return to the Broadway stage. Yes, she did host the 2021 Tony Awards that were previously postponed by the pandemic, and yes, she has been starring in “The Good Fight” with countless theatre alums, but nothing compares to seeing McDonald live. After three and a half years, the actress now leads the first production of an Adrienne Kennedy play on Broadway: “Ohio State Murders” opened at the newly-minted James Earl Jones Theatre on Dec. 8.
In “Ohio State Murders,” McDonald plays Suzanne Alexander, a writer who returns to her former college to deliver a lecture on her work. Through her narration, she reveals the racism she experienced as a young student, her relationship with a professor (played by Tony Award nominee Bryce Pinkham), and the murders of the play’s title that continue to haunt her and her writing.

Eight months after winning the Oscar for “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” Jessica Chastain has set her return to the Broadway stage in one of the greatest roles in the theatre. Under the direction of Tony nominee Jamie Lloyd, the actress will star as Nora Helmer in a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic “ A Doll’s House.” In their announcement, the New York Times shares that a spring 2023 opening date, theatre, and additional casting have not yet been revealed.
For this reinvigorated take on the nineteenth-century play, Lloyd has teamed up with Off-Broadway scribe Amy Herzog, a Pulitzer-Prize finalist who will revise the work. The production will mark Chastain’s second Broadway outing, having previously made her debut in “The Heiress” in 2012. This Oscar season, Chastain has two high-profile films in contention, too, with “The Good Nurse” and “Armageddon Time.”

The first new play of the current Broadway season, a stage adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s novel “The Kite Runner,” has closed on Broadway. A memory play that toggles back and forth between 1973 and 2001 and from Afghanistan to California, it depicts a youthful friendship that transcends class distinctions and an incident that irrevocably changes the two mates’ life trajectories. Amir Arison and Eric Sirakian starred as Amir and Hassan, respectively, under the direction of Giles Croft. The play took flight at the Hayes Theatre on July 21 and concluded its limited engagement on Oct. 30.

Attention must be paid to the latest revival of Arthur Miller’s classic American family drama “Death of a Salesman,” which opened on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre on Oct. 9. Wendell Pierce takes on the formidable role of the salesman Willy Loman, and last-year’s Tony nominee Sharon D Clarke joins him as Willy’s wife Linda. Unlike any prior production of the show on Broadway, this Loman family is portrayed by Black actors.
Director Miranda Cromwell helms this “Salesman,” which originated in the UK. That production was co-directed by Marianne Elliott — who just won a Tony this year for her revival of “Company” — and earned five Olivier Award nominations in 2020, winning for director and actress for Clarke. Stateside, the Loman family is rounded out by André De Shields as Willy’s brother Ben, and Khris Davis and McKinley Belcher III as Willy’s sons Biff and Happy.

Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller’s classic tragedy of the American Dream gone sour, is revitalized and given room to encompass the Black experience in director Miranda Cromwell’s intriguing production opening at the Hudson Theatre on Broadway tonight. Boasting flat-out terrific performances – Wendell Pierce as Willie Loman and the amazing Sharon D Clarke as his wife Linda – this Death of a Salesman doesn’t so much reinvent Miller’s masterpiece as open its doors to perspectives that enrich the material.
The script is unchanged – and surprisingly accommodating to the fresh point of view – with Cromwell and composer Femi Temowo lacing the show with markers of mid-20th Century Black life – the sounds and movement of jazz, blues and gospel, most notably – infusing the production with a legacy and identity all its own.
