Vincenzo Natali nearly died while making his first movie, “Cube.”
Made on a shoestring budget, his 1997 psychological horror only had one practical set — a huge, boobie-trap-filled cuboid prison to house the film’s action and drama — and at one point, it nearly fell on him.
Thankfully, it didn’t. But the bad luck didn’t stop there. By the time he’d finished making his genetically modified body-horror “Splice,” the process had proven so difficult, drawn-out, and stressful that it had turned the then-40-year-old director’s hair gray.
“It was like having a child,” Natali, laughing, told IndieWire as his cult-hit creation turns 15. “If I didn’t care about the movie as much as I care about my own children, my hair wouldn’t have turned gray. It’s because I wanted this thing to exist so badly. Making [‘Splice’] was so stressful, it made me sick. I had something no doctor could identify,...

Fourteen years have gone by since director Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi horror film Splice (watch it Here) reached theatres – and now Fangoria has broken the news that Splice is finally getting the novelization treatment! This novelization has been written by Claire Donner, “New York City and online branch director of the Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies, who has written essays for Severin Films’ releases of Michele Soavi’s Dellamorte Dellamore, The Sect, and The Church“, and is coming our way from Encyclopocalypse Publications, the company that’s also behind such novelizations as Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Redneck Zombies, Re-Animator, Wishmaster, Fright Night, and more.
Scripted by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor, Splice had the following synopsis: Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by splicing animal DNA to create hybrids for medical use at the company N.E.R.D. (Nucleic Exchange Research...

Fans of the 2009 sci-fi/horror movie Splice from director Vincenzo Natali will be happy to hear than an official novelization is on the way, with Fangoria first reporting the news this week.
Based on the screenplay by Natali, Antoinette Terry Bryant, and Doug Taylor, Splice: The Novelization is written by Claire Donner and published by Encyclopocalypse Publications.
Encyclopocalypse previews, “Experience Vincenzo Natali’s Splice like never before in this new official novelization by Claire Donner!”
Vincenzo Natali tweets in praise of the upcoming book this week, “Claire Donner has written a deeply psychological and perverse novelization of Splice. I loved it.”
Donner tells Fangoria, “I did not add anything new to the course of events in Splice, but the film provides so much room to explore psychology and memory that I’d like to think the novelization will feel fresh and provocative for fans. Vincenzo flatters his audience by never saying too much,...

An awfully underrated horror movie called Splice currently ranks as the 9th most-watched film in Netflix‘s entire library today. Why is this pic attracting such massive audiences, though? Is it gaining in popularity simply for being featured on the streamer’s top 10 list, or does it possess some inherent quality that needs excavating?
Directed by Vincenzo Natali back in 2009, the film follows a group of geneticists hoping to enter the annals of history by successfully splicing together human and animal DNA and thus creating hybrid lab rats. Starring Adrien Brody alongside Sarah Polley and Delphine Chanéac, the premise alone is enough to make you feel uncomfortable and despite some mixed reviews upon release, it’s a smart, well written and at times truly terrifying flick that doesn’t get anywhere near as much credit as it deserves.

I’ve got an astonishing sci-fi short film that you’ve gotta check out called "Eve." It was beautifully directed by Eric Gandois and it’s intense and mesmerizing.
The story is set in a future society where oxygen on the planet is scarce and life on Earth has virtually died off. The short has absolutely no dialogue, and the story is told through the visuals and performance of the lead character played by Delphine Chaneac, who was in Vincenzo Natali's Splice. Here’s the brief synopsis that came along with the film:
Eve A 3D movie set in a futuristic & poetic universe without any dialog The last moments of humanity on earth before nature resumes his duties.
The film was shot in 3D, but the version you are going to watch below is in 2D. Thanks to First Showing for the heads up on this great film. I...

Time to finally see an impressive short film I've been waiting years to feature here on Fs. This short is called Eve and is made by a French concept artist turned filmmaker named Eric Gandois, making a strong first impression with this work. I originally got see the short in full two years ago, but it has been kept off the internet until now. The film stars Delphine Chaneac, seen in Vincenzo Natali's Splice, as a woman living in a future where there's barely any oxygen left and most of life on our planet has died off. It's entirely dialogue free and uses visuals and her performance to tell the story. I love discovering great work like this and featuring it, as this could be the beginning of an exciting filmmaking career for Gandois. Watch below. Found on Vimeo. Description: A 3D movie set in a futuristic & poetic universe without any dialog.

In the Transporter series, Frank is joined by two team members — ex-dgse agent Caterina Boldieu (Italian actress/singer Violante Placido) and later computer whiz Jules Faroux (Hannibal‘s Mark Rendall) — as he is contracted to handle a diverse array of packages, from pop singers to priceless paintings.

TNT has picked up the U.S. rights to "Transporter: The Series," an international action drama based on the Luc Besson-produced film franchise about meticulous, skilled driver-for-hire Frank Martin, played by Jason Statham. British actor Chris Vance, who played "freelance psychopath" Mason Gilroy on "Burn Notice" and Dr. Jack Gallagher on "Mental," the short-lived 2009 Fox series set in L.A. but shot in Bogotá, stars as the small screen incarnation of Frank. François Berléand, reprising his role from the films as Inspector Tarconi, is also in the cast, alongside Andrea Osvárt, Delphine Chanéac and Charly Hübner. "Transporter: The Series" is a French-Canadian production, and was originally slated to air in the U.S. on Cinemax, though they ended up passing on the project -- a trailer that was released at the time but has since been taken down didn't look particularly promising. The first season has since aired in Canada,...

Many film websites published “decade’s best horror films” lists in late 2009/early 2010. While these lists collectively provided a rough snapshot of the genre’s ups and downs during that time, with more time to reflect, it becomes increasingly clear what an important period the 2000’s were for the horror genre on a global scale.
Not only did this decade easily and obviously eclipse the comparatively arid 1990’s in both volume of production and overall quality, the 2000’s can also be looked at as a crucial one for horror cinema despite the justified outrage about the American film industry’s widespread strip-mining of classics and foreign films for remakes/re-boots and its saturation of the market with teen-friendly PG-13 rated horror films.
While by no means as groundbreaking as the 1970’s or as sentimentally regarded as the 1980’s, the 2000’s will be recalled as the decade that, despite well-founded criticisms...

Here's the first trailer for Cinemax's new TV series Transporter, which is the small screen adaptation of Luc Besson and Jason Statham's action-packed movie franchise. Besson serves as an executive producer on the series, and the role of the Transporter is being played by Chris Vance (Burn Notice), who seems to give the character more of a James Bond kind of feel to him. Hollywood's biggest names flocked to the 65th Annual Cannes Film Festival last week to promote their new films. But let’s face it, the event was all about fabulous fashions and hair. Granted, women like us don't travel with professional stylists. We have to work with what our mommas gave us and what we can afford. But with the right inspiration and some hairpins, hair ties and a curling iron, you too can make a statement with your hair. It’s no longer about the side-swept bangs, the preppy ponytail or even the sleek straight 'do (sorry Kim Kardashian). Long luscious waves and dramatic buns were the hot hairstyles at Cannes.High buns, messy buns, sleek buns, low buns, buns with feathers or even braids -- no matter what bun style you opt for you’ll be the main fashionista on your block. We were inspired by Kirsten Dunst's braided updo.

It looks as though Cinemax's Transporter has gotten a flat tire. Deadline reports that the action drama’s executive producers/showrunners Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie have "left over creative differences." The series wil now be run by veteran TV director-producer Steven Shill, at least for the time being. Production on the 12-episode series in Toronto, is currently at ep. 4-5. The show is set for a 2012 premiere, with filming scheduled to continue through November.
Here's the synopsis:
Based on the successful film franchise of the same name created by Europacorp'sLuc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen, this fast-paced series follows the adventures of professional transporter Frank Martin, who can always be counted on to get the job done - discreetly. Operating in a seedy underworld of dangerous criminals and desperate players, his three rules are: Never change the deal, no names, and never open the package. Occasionally, complications arise and rules get broken.

Cinemax has announced that they have started production on the new Transporter television series. This new show is an adaptation of the action-packed Luc Besson and Jason Statham films. Besson is an executive producer on the series, but Statham will not be reprising his role. The role of the Transporter has been filled by Chris Vance (Burn Notice), who I think will end up doing a fine job in the series. I've enjoyed watching the Transporter films, and even though Statham isn't involved with the series I'm still excited about it and willing to give it a shot. It could end up being pretty awesome! The 12-part action series is set to debut on Cinemax in 2012.

The Movie Network, a Canadian premium cable network, announced yesterday that production has begun on its new original series Transporter. Obviously, this TV series is based on the film franchise The Transporter starring Jason Statham.
The TV series will be extremely different from the film franchises.
Statham won't be in the leading role as Frank Martin, a freelance transporter who signs on for hit jobs from fishy clients. The leading man for this series, which is in production in Toronto, is Chris Vance (Prison Break).
As for the stories, Frank will still have his golden rules: never change the deal, no names and never open the package. Speaking about changes, Frank will have a handler, Carla (Andrea Osvart). She's a former CIA operative. She organizes his mission. Carla also acts as Frank's eyes and ears on the outside.

Cinemax’s “The Transporter” TV series is moving ahead full-steam, with the two leads already cast, and now, three more regular castmembers have been added, along with a director for the cable show’s pilot episode. The Live Feed reports that “Lost’s” Stephen Williams will do the honors behind the camera for the show’s pilot episode, while a trio of actors (including one that’s very familiar with the franchise) have been added to the cast. Most notably, Francois Berleand (below), who played Inspector Tarconi in the “Transporter” movies, will reprise his role on the TV show. He’ll be joined by Delphine Chaneac (last seen as the killer DNA freak in “Splice”) as Olivia, “a reporter who knows a lot about Frank’s work”, and Rachel Skarsten (remember her from the “Birds of Prey” TV show?) as Delia, “the daughter of someone from Frank’s past.” The trio will join Chris Vance,...

It’s the third installment in our Movies of 2010. We’ve had a great year of movie experiences. We’ve laughed. We’ve cried. We’ve hurled. Especially since A Serbian Film came on the scene. To celebrate, we’ve each asked our contributors to name their top five films of the year and give a bit of an explanation. We’ll be rolling out the list each day. Please feel free to add your own comments and suggestions. Seriously, we see a lot of films and sometimes it’s easy to forget. Five minutes later you find yourself saying “oh wait, what about…”
Making a top ten list is difficult enough and a top five even harder. Some great flicks got left by the wayside and we’ve got honourable mentions here and there. Judging from results, we’ve definitely got a clear winner – which we’ll announce and crown shortly.

Yeah, we know, this one is well overdue, but better late than never right? There were a lot of mixed feelings about Splice within the horror movie circles as it zigzagged through 'Lovecraftian' style Sci-Fi, drama, and pieces of horror and explored psychological and moral based themes throughout the film. Check out the review below and we've included the movie trailer just for fun as well. Enjoy.
Splice Review by Mike Pickle
In the sci-fi Frankenstein thriller Splice; Director Vincenzo Natali has succeeded in many ways. Dividing audiences and critics being one. For critics it rides the line between compelling and absurd. For some audiences it crossed a line and was just too damn weird. Truth be told they are all right. Much like Natali's admirable 1997 sci-fi Horror mystery Cube; there is something slightly off-kilter about Splice. I personally consider that a good thing. It's a gratifying and unnerving little...

This is the review for Splice (directed by Vincenzo Natali and starring Adrien Brody, Sarah Polley, David Hewlett, Abigail Chu, Delphine Chanéac, Stephanie Baird, Brandon McGibbon). Splice is presented by Guillermo del Toro. Splice is the story of two genetic engineer scientists whose ambitious side-project creates a creature that would have anti-stem cell campaigners crowing “We told you so, God-playing heathens!” The film has the potential to reach classic status within the (admittedly underachieving) genre of sci-fi B-movies. We are introduced to Elsa (Sarah Polley) and Clive (Adrian Brody), our maverick leads. They are funded by, and also up against, The Man: corporate suits who drag them to board meetings to remind them that their research grant doesn’t come for free. The purpose of all their lab-based gene-splicing is to discover a cure-all protein that will prevent the spread of diseases in livestock. Elsa and Clive, however, have bigger ideas.

Splice
DVD & Blu-ray, Optimum
As befits a horror film dealing with genetic terrors, Splice get under your skin (even the veiny opening titles are a bit queasy). Director Vincenzo Natali has for years been creating smart little science fiction movies such as Cube and Cypher, and with its reliable cast of Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, the more healthily budgeted Splice was intended to be his breakthrough. However, Splice failed to connect with the wider audience – despite the best efforts of its producer Guillermo del Toro, a man well used to turning dark, unsettling concepts into commercially viable prospects. Brody and Polley play a couple of scientific whizzkids who, in a film about the dire consequences of smart people doing stupid things, add human DNA to the experimental hybrid creatures they've already created. The result of their morally unsound hubris is Dren; a new humanoid lifeform, expertly played by Delphine Chanéac and assisted by puppets,...

As of yesterday, Transformers: Dark of the Moon has completed principal photography (here), and is currently in post-production. It’s speculated this film will be the last of Bay’s trilogy, and that Paramount could be rebooting the series. However, it seems that a rumor is going around that Transformers 4 is a certainty, and is already looking for its villain.
According to Wonder Wall, French actress Delphine Chaneac (Splice, The Pink Panther) has been contacted about starring in Transformers 4 as a villain. “I want to do more physical movies, like the X-Men or Transformers… and somebody sent me an email a few days ago, saying you’re going to be in Transformers 4,” she said. Like all of Michael Bay’s movies, the Transformers and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallenare mostly known for the action, and that’s why Chaneac is happy about the casting. “That’s great because I...

How many science-fiction horror stories could be avoided by scientists not having their funding cut and resorting to self-testing out of desperation? Plenty. Yet, the genre as a whole, despite having this common golden goose as the source for the story’s tension, tends to strike an eerie note because there’s always an element of plausibility to the proceedings. Splice may take a few turns for the truly weird by the end, but it’s firmly rooted in today’s science of genetic manipulation as a source for medical miracles. In this case the miracle grows beyond either of the scientists’ expectations and generates a few interesting hypothetical situations for exploration.
To generate a rare protein, Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) bred a grotesque looking pair of slugs which a pharmaceutical company hopes to use as a constantly replenishing source. Unfortunately, at the shareholders meeting an unforeseen...

Chicago – In the opening moments of “Splice,” the audience is experiencing the world through the eyes of a newborn baby. Yet unlike Gaspar Noé’s “Enter the Void,” which recreated human perception with eerie perfection, this point of view shot is blatantly skewed. The doctors seem to be looking at a pulsating fishbowl rather than a baby. That theory is swiftly proven to be fairly accurate.
The newborn is, in fact, not a human, but an animal hybrid created by fearless scientists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley). Though they insist that their work aims to cure diseases such as Parkinson’s, they often seem a bit too fond of playing god. And when their bosses at the pharmaceutical company demand to see experiments that yield lucrative results, the two devoted lovers and collaborators decide to conduct their controversial work in private. Their next goal: splicing DNA to form the first-ever human-animal hybrid.
